sethmadsen wrote:

Rift is a second. I love split open and melt and sleeping lengthwise, and well actually the whole album. Probably after that is Lawn Boy. I never really got into Nectar.

Sorry, I should clarify - Farmhouse is my favorite "studio album". It has songs on it - it's more cohesive/less silly (which I do love... playing the vacuum and all... but), it has complex/intriguing music, yet isn't over the top and "believable" with a tinge of pop (A culmination that typically creates the aesthetic I usually appreciate most). So yes, farmhouse is fantastic to me. And it still dives into a live jam (I think it literally is a live take)- yet still feels like a Studio album without the quirkiness to it. It also seems the most earnest - yet slightly silly. The song Dirt nearly makes me cry every time I hear it. The first half of the album is fun-loving jam music you can dance to. The last half is more the jazz/jam musicianship I really like about them. It might be a lens thing too - it's the album that got me into Phish. I immediately loved it. When I went to go buy Rift, it had to grow on me.

Probably my favorite live album of theirs (partially because I own it and partially because I like it better than the other 4 lives albums I've listened to... so by no means a full on Phish Head) is this:

Live Phish Volume 4 by Phish

The album that got me into Phish was Billy Breathes and the song that makes me cry is Waste (although Dirt is very good on that level as well).
And that other Aste song, ie Taste on Billy Breathes is that other jazzy side of Phish I, like you, like so much. I now think that I maybe should get a bit more in the studio albums before delving too deep in the live albums: although I know some of the tracks I still have to the listen to the complete Farmhouse and Rift albums.
It's funny but don't you also have the idea that the tracks with the shortest titles are also the most focused Phish tracks 😉

So I just finished the 6 part series.

I'd recommend it. There were some cheeky parts, but I thought it well done and allowed a lot of different view points.

I'm in no way a dead head, but to not recognize their cultural significance, or their musical significance is a fallacy.

I don't think I'll ever collect bootlegs or anything like that, but I do intend on getting to know them better than some of their more popular works.

Oddly enough I work for an organization which is oddly just like The Grateful Dead - there are no managers and everyone values everyone's opinion and nearly everyone is capable enough to play all the roles - just like it was explained how The Grateful Dead operated. It was a funny realization. I don't think the owners would be too keen on knowing they run their business like The Grateful Dead. 🤣

Sometimes chaos is the best thing to create something great. Eno did it and helped a lot of artists reach their full potential, and The Grateful Dead adhered to it as well.

Fascinating TED talks about the subject as well:
https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_harford_how_messy_problems_can_inspire_creativity

I take it not as many like the Grateful Dead or they don't know what mojo is... hehe.

Anyway, I've heard many a myth about the Wall of Sound, but never really to this extent. Pretty impressive. I've been to plenty of rock shows and have yet to see something this spectacular. When you have this much gear, instead of volume, you get a concept I like to call presence. It must've been glorious to hear, especially if you were on stage/close enough to feel it as much as you heard it.

Furthermore - this had to have been quite the safety/engineering feat for the time period. A close up:

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

Now take the picture above to see the massive scale of this thing:

favorite Dead studio album is probably Blues For Allah, but the notorious "Old Renaissance Faire Grounds" bootleg (which has recently found itself an official release in the form of Sunshine Daydream (Veneta, Oregon 8/27/72)) is probably what I listen to most.
If BEA allowed bootlegs most of my charts would have a lot more Dead on them haha

My brother went as well. He was a legit deadhead in the early 90s when Garcia was still at the helm. It was like a religion for him... The whole living out of a van, drugs, etc. He probably did that for a good year and is why I like them at all/inspiration to start thread cause documentary mentioned in op.
No honestly: I think there's four things to Phish: the guitars, the piano, a kinda jazzy groovy sound and the jams: Taste has it all: one of my favorite tracks ever.

Currently looking at this one on Youtube: Neil Young and Phish playing Down By The River

Unfortunately Phish doesn't seem to be performing a lot in Europe while they are playing a number of gigs in the states.

I recently caught The Dead on their most recent fare thee well tour, and although the absence of Jerry was all too palpable, it was a wonderful experience, particularly during Micky Hart's space jam/rhythm devils segments and just the generally more psychedelic and "out-there" moments (which have always been one of my favorite sides of The Dead)

favorite Dead studio album is probably Blues For Allah, but the notorious "Old Renaissance Faire Grounds" bootleg (which has recently found itself an official release in the form of Sunshine Daydream (Veneta, Oregon 8/27/72)) is probably what I listen to most.

If BEA allowed bootlegs most of my charts would have a lot more Dead on them haha

I think I will never be a Deadhead (I don't know why: just can't get into them) but these last two days I fear I'm growing into a phishhead. Is there a cure against this?

No honestly: I think there's four things to Phish: the guitars, the piano, a kinda jazzy groovy sound and the jams: Taste has it all: one of my favorite tracks ever.

Currently looking at this one on Youtube: Neil Young and Phish playing Down By The River

Link

Unfortunately Phish doesn't seem to be performing a lot in Europe while they are playing a number of gigs in the states.

The Grateful Dead weren't interested in making records - you know it was like making an ad. We wanted to play live.
This next album isn't on here, I'll have to add it.

Their are times listening to the Jerry Garcia Band that it appears Jerry was much more relaxed, I don't know why, but it seems that way to me. This album is stellar if you can find a copy I suggest you buy it. Lots of great covers and original material jammed on in a good way.
