It's true they totally made all their music with Fisher Price toys, and actually toured nursing homes to get approval for their music. And we all know the Thom Thoms be ditching practice.

If Beefy Botham is the greatest quidditch player ever, then yes! 🤣 (I know it isn't quidditch)

🤣 Beefy would be the best at quidditch I'm sure of that!
I think I'd add to your list longevity; accessibility; influence (in most cases) and their albums are popular with new generations

Ability to transform themselves from artisans to artists (a discussion in of itself if you are interested)
Immense ability to connect with humanity at large emotionally.

Mentally intriguing- they build their music on philosophical thought or current humanistic needs in a touching way.

Musical - which means having a pleasant sound; melodious; tuneful - which in turn is likely what makes them accessible... but really what I'm saying here is they are amazing musicians, and not just in a technical way, they know how to make theory and complex music into simple, yet explosive musical amazement.

Those are the things I think separates these artists from other "good" musicians and turns them from artisans to artists - or if you will, from good musicians to "the greats".

Yeah. Good descriptions 😄 I basically agree with all of that (though I'm sure people would differ in how important they place tunefulness in relation to other qualities). I couldn't hum a tune from Bitches Brew. But I guess its kinda tuneful in its own way!!

I would interpret mentally intriguing as including groups where you like their style, attitude, humour, sense of fun etc. I think this is generally more important than 'big ideas'. At least in pop/ rock anyway.

This could be where art vs artisan comes in. I may ultimately not see too much distinction between these kind of artists and entertainers (though I would go with Jazz and Classical as art). I'm sure others disagree. Just my own preference so will go with agreeing to disagree probably 🤣

Thanks for the food for thought 😎
I used to be in a metal band in college and we played a lot of Priest.

I became a metalhead when JP was at the height of their popularity.
Morover, I love Iron Maiden, and it seems that those two groups are often spoken in the same breath; that anybody who loves one loves the other. But JP never reached me.

Iron Maiden >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Judas Priest

Not true... I think it's because Maiden's most known/popular albums are their best while you actually have to dig deeper than British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance to recognize Priest's greatness. I wouldn't say one is much better than the other, because they're equally talented in almost all categories. But Maiden never ever had a song as perfect as "Victim of Changes" or "Beyond the Realms of Death" so Priest gets my pick. They were far more versatile too, honestly. Maiden has mostly remade the same album to varying degrees of success (nothing wrong with that; AC/DC is another band who did the same but not nearly as well) while Priest has reinvented themselves multiple times (they started off like a garage version of Black Sabbath, then went to Scorpion-esque arena rock in the 80s, had an amazing thrash album with Painkiller, and so on - and this is recognizing the fact that Maiden had a synth album - Priest did as well, and that before Dickinson, Maiden were basically a Priest copycat).

I'm going to disagree, especially with the bolded.

I think Dickinson's rich, even operatic vocals are far superior to Halfords--one can really sing, the other has to resort to screaming for emphasis. Not that Hlford's bad, mind you, just that he lacks the unique and special quality of Dickinson. The songwriting from Maiden is much more interesting as well; far more thoughtful than the standard metal themes. And IMO Murray & Smith totally slay Tipton and Downing.

But that's all easy to see as rather subjective stuff. On a more solid note (so to speak), there are huge differences in two areas. Nicko McBrain's drumming is far more creative, and even that's relatively minor compared to the difference in the bass position. There's a reason everyone knows the name Steve Harris and nobody ever talks about whatshisname from Priest. Harris isn't just a great bassist, he's a monster of the entire metal genre regardless of position. A clear discriminator.

As for going synth, Turbo and Somewhere in Time were both released in 1986, so neither really beat the other to the punch and can claim too much influence on the other. But what sets them apart is that while Somewhere in Time just considered to be relatively weak when compared to Maiden's best, but still a god album, while Turbo is almost universally reviled. Moreover, Maiden came back strong with another synth-heavy album in Seventh son of a Seventh Son, considered by many devotees to be one of their very best, while Priest had no chance of mastering the sound in the genre. Once again, Maiden clearly set themselves apart from their more pedestrian NWOBHM cousins.

Nah, everyone loves radiohead. I don't really get why though. Radiohead is one of those bands that have both popularity and is loved by critics. Radiohead is one of those few bands a random person I meet is likely to know (age dependent though) and like while also every fucking review website also has pretty high up there.

Have to agree with this guy. Davis is 10x both of these artists, but, seriously, readiohead beating both beatyles and davis out?

Radiohead has got to be the worst band to be considered this good. More than half their catalog sounds like a person didn't make it and most of it is boring as hell.

Michael1981 wrote:

Michael Jordan? I haven't studied his career stats lately 🤣 I think I know what you mean: he's like the Beefy Botham of Basketball or something!

Ok. I hear you guys (Sethmasden and Travelful) though you've tried to dazzle me with all these metaphors hehe. I guess the guys on this list all got to the top for some reason. Personally I prefer not to see them as great (except for Miles Davis) as I find that creates an expectation they don't quite fulfill. And I basically like a lot of similar enough stuff just as much. Don't ask me about hip-hop though!

I think I just don't like seeing pop/ rock/ soul artists being seen as great anymore. There was a time when I did but now it doesn't mean so much to me. I'm often surprised at how good things sound to me by less storied and celebrated bands: Inspiral Carpets; House of Love and the Cardigans being recent examples.

The artists listed seem to combine: longevity; accesability; influence (in most cases) and their albums are popular with new generations (ok we don't know yet with Kendrick but it's a good bet). I think they are probably as good candidates as any for greatness in their fields but for me it's not such a helpful distinction any more. Someone has to be on the pedestal I suppose but it's not a story I buy into so much these days.

People like to have heroes though so I can't knock it!

If Beefy Botham is the greatest quidditch player ever, then yes! 🤣 (I know it isn't quidditch)

Yea, that makes sense too.

It's like trying to glorify something that really isn't that great.

Perhaps I have rose colored glasses or something and still see it all from the eyes of a 15 year old.

And there is awesome music by less celebrated artists. Bassist of Kyuss still makes some really cool music nobody really ever listens to. There's dude on soundcloud who has like 500 followers who makes worthwhile music.

So that's that arguement...

I do also totally get where you are coming from. I read a really interesting article (like 2 years ago) talking about how the Mona Lisa is easily one of the most sought after artistic experiences, yet questioned if it really was that great compared to so many other artistic endeavors.

Then there's the concepts of pluralism and post-colonialism which beg us to see past what I'll call old white men. Basically the standards - the classics - the greeks, the romans, the blah blah blah... there's so much more.

Do Humanity professors blow these things out of proportion or are there really such things as "the greats"?

Shakespeare vs May Ayim... aren't they just the same, but different? (probably not)

Shakespeare vs a vlogger? (absolutely positively yes)

R.E.M. vs Orange Juice... aren't they just the same, but different? (I think not, but I could see how they could be)

hehe - anyway, nice chat. I'll see my boring ass self out. haha.

Maybe I should have voted Miles. Maybe I should have abstained. Tough choice.

Nobody else was even in the running with those two.

Until the Radiohead and Beatle fanbois showed up.

I'm bored so I'm saying the same thing twice. I think all of these artists are stellar in different ways. Being able to see the greatness in different forms is key, instead of fitting a preconceived mold.

When I said nobody else is in the running, I meant for me personally. I knew the Fabs would surge and, especially on this site, that Radiohead would also do the same.

I agree completely that it's good to look for greatness in different forms. Personally, I didn't find it in this list, but I do find it in these forms, and many others, by artists not on the list.

Oh sorry - thought you meant the other way.

Also makes sense.
Not really, which is kinda surprising.

I used to be in a metal band in college and we played a lot of Priest.

I became a metalhead when JP was at the height of their popularity.
Morover, I love Iron Maiden, and it seems that those two groups are often spoken in the same breath; that anybody who loves one loves the other. But JP never reached me.
