It's impossible for me to rank them, but all I know is that Heart of Gold is, hands downs, the CATCHIEST songs ever written, if I had a dime every time I found myself humming to it, I'd be a billionaire. And in the case of Joni Mitchell, if I had to do a list for her songs, I would probably have to write down half of her discography, but the song I love the most is definetely A Case of You.

This time we turn our attention from England to Canada. You don't have to do both people if you don't want to. You could do one or the other, or both.

Here's mine:

Neil Young;

Cinnamon Girl
Like a Hurricane
Heart of Gold
Four Strong Winds (didn't write it though)
Mr. Soul
Are You Ready for the Country
Birds
Hey Hey My My (into the black)
Look Out for My Love
Old Man

Runners-up
Down By the River
Words
Ohio
Out on the Weekend

Joni Mitchell;

Free Man in Paris
People's Parties
Electricity
Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire
Song for Sharon
Don't Inerrupt the Sorrow
The Boho Dance
Harry's House
Otis and Marlena
Sweet Bird
The Circle Game

Runners-up
Raised on Robbery
See You Sometime
Shades of Scarlett Conquering
Car on a Hill
Court and Spark

Both great artists and two of my favourites of all time. Good effort on narrowing it down to 10 songs each and normally I'd join in on this but just far too hard for me. Nice to see what people are picking though.

You said it, Bobby5b! Look at Dylan - what he did with that limited voice - all those different stylings. Now his voice is a wreck - but it's a barnacle-encrusted wonder - still full of character. Not sure about all those tin pan alley covers though...

Anyways, will you be adding these responses up, like you did with the Stones?

PS listened to Court & Spark - still prefer Blue!

Not so fond of Joni - but I just listened to Blue and it's pretty terrific - if she would just rein her voice in a bit...

Yeah, Joni does warble a bit too much...
... but I can't get over the idea of complaining about Joni's voice on a thread that is also about Nasal Neil

LMAO. Yeah that's true, but he's one of those kind of stars that they only had in the seventies. I like to call them great singers with lousy voices. They had really weak and really thin voices, but they were great singers nonetheless. Lol. 70s was loaded with them. It's something that you'll never see again. To make it nowadays you have to have a American Idol type of voice where every single note that they sing has to be a show-stopper. It's disgusting and it's absolutely tasteless. It's just such a turn-off how horrifying today's singing is. It is so pretentious and repellent and repulsive. I prefer the old style singers who sounded like actual human beings rather than machines.
I guess Leonard Cohen would be a good idea for someone to do, but I'm not much of an expert on all of his stuff. I'm sure someone else could do a better job than me.
But being a fan of early 70's mainstream Rock, I've been thinking about all these Canadian band that I happen to love like The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Someone just did Rush and Triumph, and there's a few more Canadian bands from that period that I always thought were pretty good. But they're probably not familiar enough to everybody.

OK I will try those Joni albums.

Meanwhile you should try some L.Cohen - the (ironically titled) Greatest Hits album (I know we're not supposed to like compilations in these hallowed halls) is a good place to start.

Songs from a Room is prob the most austere

Death of a Ladies Man prob the most accessible

He's an acquired taste but there is a mood where only LC will do...

(I'll pass on the Rush etc ... 🤐 )

All I've ever had is two of his albums. I'm Your Man and The Future. Which I liked. And I've heard a couple of the earlier albums which I didn't like nearly as much. Except for the famous songs like Suzanne and shit like that. But I can't say I've heard all of his stuff.

From Leonard Cohen I love his live albums. Starting with Cohen Live and ending in the famous Live in London. They contain some of his classics, as well as other contemporary songs which aren't bad, played live with talented musicians. I know that LC purists will say that much better to enjoy his poems when he sings them tenderly with his guitar but I prefer a more organic sound (with some exceptions, like the piercing Famous Blue Raincoat which needs no extra instrument).

Not so fond of Joni - but I just listened to Blue and it's pretty terrific - if she would just rein her voice in a bit...

LMAO. She did rein it in. Beginning with the next album.

Bobbyb5 - OK I'll check out so that's what .. For the Roses, Court & Spark? Hejira I quite liked when it came out.

Anyways, I'm surprised no Canadian has raised the point - What about Leonard Cohen ?!?!?

I'm only going to post Young's top 10 in my opinion because I don't know enough of Joni Mitchell to do one.
Cowgirl in the Sand
Out on the Weekend

To tell the truth, Harvest is probably my favorite by him overall. But out of all of Joni Mitchells 1970s albums, Blue is her least interesting batch of songs. And about half of them are very awkwardly performed on top of it. By the next album everything really kicked in though. And it lasted for about five or six albums. It was a great run of albums.
