Assuming you're comparing Spider-Man (2002) to Amazing Spider-Man (2012), a movie that a lot of people have heard of by the way.

The budget of 2002's Spider-Man was $139 Million, according to an online inflation calculator, this translates to about $188 Million in 2012 Dollars. Amazing Spider-Man had a budget of somewhere $200-230 Million, so your point that they're lowering budgets is completely wrong, they actually raised the budget.

Terrible argument. You said the the theater was in a shopping mall. Maybe other stores in the mall have closed, or seeing significantly less shoppers, and that's why the parking lot is emptier?

Also, how would cutting budgets lead to decreased attendance? Where is your evidence that they're even cutting budgets?

I know the oscars (and most awards) are a political scam but as a movie geek I still recognize their importance to most people who won one and I get happy for the winners.

I think it's pretty neat that Guillermo Del Toro is now the third Mexican in the last five years to win Best Director after Cuaron and back to back winner Inarritu. Not that I have any special ties to Mexico but they're all fantastic filmmakers.

Hello again Frances and Gary, who both made our top 5 actresses and actors of all time lists respectively. The supporting winners are both underrated hands who have been killing it for like 20 years.

At first I thought Shape of Water was gonna win, but then I remembered that It wasn't nominated for the Screen Actor's Guild for Best Ensemble, this is important because only one film (Braveheart) has won best picture without a nomination for Best Ensemble at the SGAs. The most concerning thing about Billboards is it doesn't have a Best Director Nomination, but neither did Argo and that was a recent win so I'm going with TBOEM.

Well it's Oscar Weekend, so here it goes. As always, I enjoyed hearing the winners of the Razzies announced this morning. I didn't see many of the nominees but it seemed odd that mother! was nominated for so many given its critical acclaim. It didn't "win" any. I was hoping Pirates 5 would because boy did that movie suck. The Emoji Movie took home the most Razzies including Worst Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Guess I should watch it now 🕺 . When will they start televising the Razzies? I would actually tune in for that. I want to hear the jokes on shitty movies. I want to see someone show up and accept their award and hear their speech. Sounds like it'd be hilarious. But instead they televise the vomit-inducing Oscar ceremony.

I have one, and I saw way more movies this year than I would've because of it. It was especially helpful during Oscar season. I have no idea how it's a sustainable business model, because I've used way more than $10 each month.

I know, Movie Pass covers the cost beyond $10/month. hereforashortime, it's not a sustainable business model on subscriptions alone, because who isn't gonna use > $10/month? However, MoviePass has other ways of gaining revenue. If they haven't already, they will sell their customers' personal information to advertisers. Also I imagine there is (or will be) advertising on their website and mobile app.

But in a nutshell, it's a very shaky business model. I hope it pays off though. Back in Aug 2017, MoviePass lowered its price from $15/mo (or $21 in select areas) to $10/mo. As a result, the number of subscribers swelled from < 50,000 in August to about 2,000,000 today. That's crazy. They must be losing tons of money if all these new customers take advantage of it. I just got mine a couple weeks ago and I plan to take advantage of it because I'm a movie buff and this is a great deal (minus the selling of my personal info to advertisers..I'm not a fan of that, but all the movies for $10/month is hard to turn down). However, if everyone abuses it, it may not survive.

But here's what happens if MoviePass does survive and continues this deal. They will take credit for a rise in movie theater attendance, which can then turn into a revenue-sharing deal with movie theater chains and studios, making them all mutually dependant. I'm not opposed to that, especially with the theater chains. Theater chains share box office grosses with the studios, plus they get all the concession profits. Theater chains are making bank. I think they could afford to share some concession profit with MoviePass to keep them going (unless they're AMC, screw them by the way).

However, I think this will depend on theater attendance and how long MoviePass's funding lasts. If theater attendance rises, MoviePass can take credit for that and make a revenue-sharing deal. So far, not so good. From August 1, 2017 (around when MoviePass lowered their price and the number of customers started exploding) through Jan 31, 2018, domestic attendance was roughly 571 million. However, in the same 6-month window one year earlier, Aug/2016 through Jan/2017, domestic attendance was 617 million. Attendance in the same six-month window of Aug/2015 to Jan/2016 was about 634 million. www.boxofficemojo.com was my source. That means MoviePass has not led to an increase in attendance. Maybe they don't have enough customers yet, or maybe the movie selection hasn't been very good lately, or maybe it's something else.

Either way, it doesn't look good right now. I think this spring and summer will tell if MoviePass will survive in its current business model. I hope it does, not just for me because I'm a movie buff who frequently goes to theaters, but for the whole industry. It'd be great if more casual fans would go to the theaters more often, and take chances on films they would likely skip if it weren't for MoviePass.

We shall see.

Oh well. The show will go on.
