also I'm going to throw a negative vote at Twin Peaks, garbage.

I liked Tales From The Crypt as a kid, not sure if it holds up.

the first season of Dexter was incredible, then it was pointless, then outlandish, then boring.

NOTHING HAPPENED IN THE LAST 5 SEASONS OF THE SOPRANOS AND THERE WERE ONLY 6 SEASONS. the acting was great, the dialogue wasn't bad, and the characters were fleshed out (even though they were all unpleasant ppl), but there were no interesting events after the first season. just a soap opera full of angry ppl shouting for no real reason.

I just realized how old I might be perceived as but I'm actually only 29.

Twin Peaks was straight up art. The 2017 reload featured a bunch of cool tracks at the end of each episode. This was how I found Sharon Van Etten; the season also featured Nine inch Nails and a bunch of other bands. I think David Lynch (Twin Peaks director) has a really great ear for music and for getting people together. So far I've been/am going to two of Lynch's benefit concerts, and the lineups have always been so sick. Two years ago he had a concert with Sting, Jim James from My Morning Jacket, and a few other acts... since then he's only gotten better, this month he's hosting something called Festival of Disruption which has a lineup of Animal Collective, Flying Lotus, Jon Hopkins, Jim James, Flying Lotus, members of LCD Soundsystem, etc... also there will be art films shown.

I think the original Twin Peaks had a great score (courtesy of Angelo Badalamenti, if you don't know him he composed a lot of Good Shit™ for Lynch) and a bunch of cool features from a woman named Julee Cruise. He has quite and eye/ear for music and artists, it's pretty astounding what he does and how he manages. I'm also just madly obsessed with Twin Peaks' stellar cinematography that stays fucking chilling even after nearly 30 years. �'� �'� �'�

Anyone else here a Twin Peaks fan?

He's certainly a lot of things.

Good to see this thread back. Currently working my way through the West Wing and really enjoying it. One of the few things me and the SO are equally excited about. It's lighthearted and lacks cynicism, but makes for a cozy evening watch while being able to remind yourself you must be really clever because you watch the West Wing.

I had to quit Twin Peaks. I really wanted to like it but couldn't bring myself to watch any more. All the characters felt like archetypes drawn up on a napkin. Love all three songs in the soundtrack. Couldn't think of any plot or personality worth returning to. It feels like (and maybe I didn't get through it enough to judge) that it's had this new niche following because of how quirky and dated it is and its fans want to latch onto something that's left of field for the sake of it.

As a side, I think it's awesome that platforms like Netflix are able to take risks and revive these niche fan-favourites for the very targeted market it aims at. It must have been crazy to have something like Twin Peaks on live TV in the day, and I can see why it had to take the turns it did.

Anyway. Need some tricks into getting my girlfriend to watch the Wire. Already tried telling her that Season 4 of The West Wing takes an artistic turn and is set in Baltimore, but she saw right through it.

You got it. The only TV shows I like are ones that were made before I was born. I like old stupid comedies better, but my next choice would be shows like Mission Impossible and old cop shows like Dragnet

Sorry, I just think it's (at best) mildly entertaining and amusing ... occasionally kind of funny. I'm not sure what there really is to recommend one spend their time with it unless that time is not very valuable. As far as I'm concerned it's the televised equivalent of bad pop music that has its moments from time to time. I missed its last few seasons and pretty much the only reason I saw its middle period was through a girl I dated that liked to watch it. I did, however, watch its first 3 or 4 seasons entirely by no one elses fault! Looking back, probably just a diversion from homework :D

On your scale I'd say it's at least 6.5, with the first five seasons being close to 7. Though perhaps so many hours of TV that's ultimately 6.5 is insignificant and a waste of time for you anyway.

Re: 6.5 or 7... 🤔 I am pretty far removed from having watched it... But thinking about it for me, it's probably more likely 5/10-ish, though now I can see why you'd disagree more strongly with my initial comment if it is 6.5-7 for you

0 votes for The Sopranos, I LOVE YOU GUYS! I just rewatched the entire series in about a month, it was even worse than I remembered. 50% of it is devoted to soap opera, family drama bulls&^*. And it's so repetitive, the same characters' same issues are rewritten slightly differently for every stupid argument in every stupid episode.

Dumba&^ characters getting angry, that's a good 10% of the show, and you know that's a conservative estimate. Anger is the only emotion any of the characters feel with little exception. None of the characters are likable, they're either douchebags or a*&holes or whiny b*&^%es. 86 hours to tell that story? What story? There's a stupid tangent in every episode, a self-contained story that takes up the majority of the episode - it might as well have no continuity at all, really, what's the over-arching story that's good enough to justify the harm this does to the individual episode's story? Not that any individual episode's story is good. Oh, Chris is working on some idiotic creative writing project, wow. Somebody gets in deep gambling and can't pay Tony, wow. Oh, Chris has yet another stupid creative writing project. Unbelievable. Over 80 episodes and how many individual stories can you even remember? I just watched it and all I remember is a few boring non-ideas.

Stupid soap opera. For anyone who disagrees, I recommend Days Of Our Lives, you'll love that s*&^.

Rant over. Anyway, Breaking Bad, Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Game Of Thrones, The Wire, Simpsons, Seinfeld, and South Park are the best shows of all time. Haven't seen Archer or Rick And Morty or Cheers or MASH yet but plan to. I also need to rewatch All In The Family, haven't seen it since I was a kid but thinking back on it, it seems like it's still relevant. I hope it's as good as it is in my head.

EDIT: I actually liked the first season of The Sopranos. The overarching story of Tony's mom plotting to kill him and pretending to be senile was brilliant and while the family drama/soap opera nonsense was there, it was at least new before every subsequent season dealt with that same s&^% over and over again. The other seasons also had nothing like the story of Tony and his mom/Corrado, there was nothing. Season 2? Richie Aprile is out of jail and dating Tony's obnoxious sister. WOOOOOOW. He doesn't really adjust well in the Soprano crew, it escalates, and... they face off? No, of course not. Just as Tony decides to get rid of him, he happens to die an unrelated death. Unreal. Anticlimactic garbage. Season 3? Actually, I'm not doing this for every season, they're worth no more of my time. Overall, f*&^ Sopranos.

My all-time favourite TV show is Brit sitcom Only Fools And Horses. I can't see past it and it always makes me feel better when I watch it. My all-time favourite American show is MASH. That show was pure genius and I own the box sets of both shows.

My favourite ever show from outside the US and UK is the 1970s Chinese show Monkey. Monkey was superb its like a re-telling of Buddhist tales, with a comic element but it is touching not sacrilegious, I really suggest checking it out. I mean it has a vain, arrogant Monkey-God who has his own personal cloud he can fly around on and a character named Pigsy. It's ace.

I also want to add I was a big fan of Roseanne (very funny and down-to-earth) and also the Australian soap Neighbours. The latter I have watched at various formative and important time of my life and remains my all-time favourite soap opera. It has had some babe-a-licious women on it too, like Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia and the lady who played Annalise. And, speaking of Australia comedy show Kath and Kim was pretty damn good too.

Also British soap Coronation Street is worth mentioning for its sometimes witty scripts and eccentric characters although Neighbours is the only soap I watch regularly. Oh and lest we forget - Dynasty was the hilarious (unintentionally) American show of the 80s with its big shoulder pads, emotional breakdowns and characters getting abducted by aliens. That was neat.

Plus there are a whole load of 70s/80s shows like: Starsky & Hutch, The Dukes of Hazard, Wonder Woman, Kojak, Columbo, Buck Rogers, The Sweeney and The Professionals that I loved at the time.

Have yet to see Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos or The Waking Dead although I own complete box sets of 3 of them plus the first 2 seasons of Walking Dead.

If you had asked me this question 20 years ago my number 1 would have been Twin Peaks which was just so eerie, exciting and eccentric. There was nothing else like it before or since and to get to watch it as a teenager was pretty special. Looking forward to the new series of that and also the new series of Game of Thrones.
