Just thought I'd give the Zoso intro to dubstep since so many people are willing to discount the genre so easily without giving it a proper go.. like a lot of electronic music it's more about the individual tune than the album, as so few producers get to even release lp's anyway...

you're all into music.. surely you know and are aware there are great tunes in every genre..

So here's an intro.. I'll start with the melodic light dubstep that I like and will progressively get heavier..

I think the issue is that "tru" or "original" dubstep is hard to define.

from Wikipedia: Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in south London, England. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals."

from Urban Dictionary: Dubstep is music centred around bass. It draws on many musical influences. Such influences include, dub, reggae, d'n'b, jungle, UK garage, grime, techno and IDM. Usually around 140bpm in tempo, the unifying sounds within dubstep are always bass and sub-bass. The music ranges in style from melodious instrumentals to dark, techy and distorted numbers. Many UK grime mc's also mc over dubstep tracks, although grime and dubstep should not be confused. Dubstep is usually mellow and generally has a well paced structure to each song. Grime beats are generally more disjointed, the overall production level being grittier than that in dubstep.

So James Blake is dubstep but Skrillex is grime-step?

dubstep isn't just just characterized by bass drops; this is what the bros want though, so that's why most things including the 'wubwubwub' is counted as 'bro-step.' Dubstep is characterized by drums in awkward time signatures, and that can be a concept with endless great music behind it. I mean, you can layer drums with several different time signatures from several different influences (African polyrhythms, Middle Eastern drums, Western four to the floor) into one song with an ambient sound to make things really interesting, and this hasn't even been done yet. As long as drum music persists in the relative mainstream, dubstep can continue in the relative mainstream and it really has relatively infinite room to grow and expand because of the variety of drum music possible in such odd time signatures and the variety of feelings ambient music can produce. The drummers of Burundi and Brian Eno are etched into music history, why can't a dubstep artist gain the same respect?

I can't see it getting much further. As stated before, James Blake is already more of a 'post-dubstep' artist.

And, if we are going to continue with the 'age/swearing/appropriateness' issues, can we make a DIFFERENT topic 🤡 Ya know. One that's not supposed to be about dubstep.

I think, if anything, post-dubstep is likely going to be the future of dubstep. As dubstep sits now, it will most likely stagnate as there aren't enough interesting, innovative things being thrown around in the genre right now. Post-dubstep will allow the genre to fulfill its potential.

guys, I wish people could be more civil without resorting to insults. It is perfectly possible, you know. And I'm sick of seeing some people feeling like they are being pushed out of here just because they have different taste. The site would be a much better place with everyone getting along.

Anyway, now that I've said that, my "grandfather's generation" was that of the big band era and of some very early blues and country music. I have quite a few of his old 78 rpm records. He absolutely adored music of all types. He's been gone awhile now, but my fondest memories of him were linked to listening to music with him or listening to him sing and play music. He loved blues, he loved country, he loved rock. He was never "set in his ways" and he was always open to experiencing new music of all types. I adored the man very much and I always admired the way he valued the emotion and the power of good music. He was always ready to listen to the latest rock records just as much as he was willing to pull out an old Tex Ritter record to play along with.

I used to share a lot of music that I had "discovered" with him. Sometimes he'd nod and tell me that it was good...or great. Sometimes, he'd look at me and just shake his head and say, "He'll not be around very long." However, ALWAYS gave it a chance...and he was almost always right about the longevity of a musician's career. It didn't matter what the music was...he just knew when it was quality stuff.

So, when people talk about music being a "generation-thing"...that's when I say that it is THEY that just don't get it.

That's like saying that I can't watch, enjoy, and appreciate "Metropolis," "Citizen Kane," "Clockwork Orange," and "Avatar" equally. Different eras...different technology...different styles...but all are stories that are told quite well. I can appreciate them all and I've watched each many times. I'm also intelligent enough to know to turn "Soul Plane" off after the first two minutes.

Yes, indeed, I do stand by my statement that there isn't nearly as much quality music out there these days. I keep actively looking for it...I just don't find a lot of it.
