^^^ That right there is how it should be. Just listen to what you love no matter how old or new it is or how popular. My most favorites are not a part of the new crowd, but that doesn't mean that I don't love what is new. To me, the best duo in country music these days is the one named High Valley, but of course they are not the most popular one.

God bless you and them and my other favorite acts always!!!

Holly

P.S. The good that has been said about my favorites list is very much appreciated too. Actually every message is appreciated because its better than my favorite music not getting any attention at all. It took one of my late favorites 20 years to find his way back to the front burner, I love my beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal SO much!!!

Yeah I don't see why your list is getting so much hate. I feel like my list is pretty radical for the conservative tastes here and I still have what I consider to be a great rating (appreciate it folks 😄 ). Maybe I've thrown in just enough classic favorites to keep everyone satisfied, but that's only because I happen to like the music on them. Its kind of like an escape from the music of today, which I appreciate because its different, but no way in hell am I gonna ignore the amazing stuff going on recently and I've even been a part of.

All you can do is list what you love as soon as you love it. I only have one list and it is of what I think are the two best albums from my most favorite singers and whenever I've discovered someone new, I add what I think are their two best albums to the list. You can only list what you think is good since it is your list and if others don't care for the music that you spotlight, oh well.

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. I've seen what's been said about my list and what people have put out there so far about it doesn't bother me. For the most part, I've never been a listener of what is considered good by the majority of everyone else (There's been a moment or two where I musically connected with those of that group.) and so I know what can be put out there when others share their two pennies. I just listen to what I love and if anyone else happens to like it as well, cool. If not, that only means more of the "barbecue" for me to enjoy. 😄 😄 😄

DISHWALLA and DISSOCIATIVES in particular were my "high schooler gut picks". i hope you can still love and appreciate stuff from your younger days.

even if that's collective soul, mariah carey, nickelback, nirvana, chris tomlin and the foo fighters.

Oh it's still represented. It was a more natural thing because somehow when I was 14 I decided a simultaneously immature and mature thing - only great musicians can put out great albums - good artists can make good songs.

And it's even more represented in my 1-400 top album charts...

And actually... slightly embarrassing, but also empowering, is I didn't really change that much after a survey of many albums I'd never heard of before - or I did, but never took the time to listen to. Some of those albums made my top 100, but I'd wager 80% of my current top 100 chart would be what it was in 2013 had I not listed 8 R.E.M. albums... 🤣

And yes - DISHWALLA was totally a big part of my 15 year old self as well. I think I listened to that hit song of theirs like 937457384 times over a summer once - on repeat many days to be honest with a friend of mine. Summer of like 98? 99?

When I first joined this site, I basically put my 18 year old self's music collection as my top list. What came to mind - the gut feeling.

My Old (2013) Top Albums by sethmadsen by sethmadsen

Then as I started learning about "better" music from more veteran users on the site as well as the decade charts, I started to doubt my limited experience of music as the end of my journey. That's it - it's a musical journey for me. I first started to second guess my gut check - and rated each album I more or less already had memorized one more time, song by song, and reoganized my overall based on a slightly more logical approach instead of just a gut check. I am at times disappointed with this chart when I just look at it - you know, judge the book by it's cover. But then I go listen to these albums and I remember why I ranked them like this (according to my love for it - and an attempt to remove bias by letting "the math" make the choice).

But as I age, my musical journey changes me and give it another year or two and I wouldn't be surprised if this overall doesn't change even more between this and my original chart:
Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by sethmadsen

As others said - just make sure your enjoying the journey. As Luigi suggested - take a break if you need. Sharpen the saw. Other users have helped them build their charts by creating/thinking about a framework for rating/reviewing/critiquing. Sometimes that works for users and other times that's totally bunk - you gotta go with what's right for you.

Enjoy the journey, mate.
A pleasure, my friend. Although I have to confess I did nick that idea from John Peel. Having said that my top 100 LPs are spread over two record boxes so easily grabbed if the unthinkable happened.

There seems to be a number of different ways to compile a chart. The personal touch always works best - I’ve never understood why people bother doing charts based on what they objectively consider the finest albums ever to be, but each to their own. I’ve always stuck purely to those albums I truly adore, know back-to-front (almost to the point of intimacy) and have either made my laugh, dance, cry, tingle, play air guitar or remind me of particular people/times/events. I don’t think a chart needs regular updating either (certainly not a Top 100) unless you’ve suddenly ‘got into’ a new genre/artist/whatever that you hadn’t entertained before - mine’s been relatively static for ages, but the odd album does leap in every now and again.

Just don’t consider it a chore - it’s your opportunity to let your personality shine through and tell the world what presses your buttons. Unless you worship at the feet of Scaruffi.

I had a rought time thinking if my chat really represented all I really liked about music, and didn't really know what was above what album, what makes me love more salad days than bloom fro example? I just really can't objectify my love for some piece of art deep inside my lonely heart. I think, writing notes really gave me a hand in reorganizing a chart, I feel like by the things I wrote It deserves that place or that spot.
Also I organize in a way of thinking if my house got in a fire which album I would save above what, this really helped me to rank most of them, thanks to jimbo no wax, cheers

Your chart will always be accurate and right at the moment you click update chart. Just keep this one thing in mind.
Do you think most people pick their favorite albums, or the ones that they think are considered the greatest by other people?

I suppose everybody is constantly changing their opinions of music and that's the beauty of it. Charts are great for like just seeing what albums you like but I still have no idea which I like more out of 'Queen is Dead' and 'In the aeroplane over the sea', theyre both great and I don't see the point of definitvely choosing between them. And my Charts mostly bullshit anyway
