Agree with you about James Brown too.

Yeah some artists just aren't album makers, and that's ok.

But yeah, to me There's a Riot Goin On just falls flat in comparison to Stand!, if you compare it song by song that is, and if you care about musicality, songwriting, emotional and mental experiences, etc. But there's probably other ways to look at an album.

I suppose I am curious what people love about that album that maybe I'm missing out on (besides the great singles).

Yeah, it's the great ones on that album that hold it all together for me, and even the ones I don't think are great I'm just used to. And when I to listen to it I don't skip over them or anything. I just look at them as breaks between the great songs. I think the great ones are Family Affair, Running Away, You Caught me Smilin, and probably Spaced Cowboy and Thank You for Talking. Those first three being the greatest.

Greatest Hits by Sly & The Family Stone

Greatest Hits is perfect for what it is, but unfortunately it ends in 1970. So you don't get anyything from Riot, and you don't get If You Want Me to Stay.
I got a cheapo Import that I picked up years ago that's almost perfect. It's got everything from Greatest Hits, plus the hits from Riot & Fresh, and also just a couple album tracks like Que Sera Sera, which I happen to like. But Anthology is pretty good too. You know how some anthology albums are too overloaded with unnecessary stuff that you don't really want? Well, it's not really like that. There's not too many and not too few tracks on it.

3. What's Going On Marvin Gaye 1971 6 87.7
Inner City Blues, What's Going On, and Mercy Mercy Me are some of the greatest soul songs ever written. Marvin Gaye took Soul music to a mature level without sacrificing songwriting and tonality, rather taking it to another level.

4. Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul by Otis Redding 1965 85
Dude delivers quite possibly the most powerful soul experiences/vocals known to soul music. While the single Dock of the Bay is near and dear to my heart, this album seems to be a bit more solid to me, song for song.

6. Songs In The Key Of Life Stevie Wonder 1976 2 85
Is there really a better soul musician? Dude knows his music... it's really hard for me to choose a favorite between this and SITKOL. SITKOL has some better tracks, but the double album brings it down with 3 or 4 filler tracks, but this album shows his musical prowess as one of the greatest arrangers of all time.

7. Superfly Curtis Mayfield 1972 5 84.4
Pusherman and title track are off the hook.

8. Star Time James Brown 1991 80
I think I'd rather have a best of that took my favorite tracks on this, added living in America and done. I like the full landscape, but there's a handful of tracks that sound nearly just like another track. James Brown is a pioneer of funk and the hardest working man in show business, but I have hard time not thinking he's amped up on cocaine and not making a whole lot of sense. Great heart, but sometimes a bit incoherent in purpose if that makes any sense. Still love it.

9. There's A Riot Goin' On Sly and the Family Stone 1971 14 77.9
I love Sly and Fam, but I think with Graham leaving the scene and the drug infused train crash about to occur, this album suffers in my opinion. It steals melodies from other songs, lyrics, etc. and just doesn't have the songs Stand! has. I'd rather take the best bits of this and put it in a comp... it's an ok album (it hurts to say this as someone who considers themselves a huge Sly fan... but it's how I feel).

10. Hot Buttered Soul Isaac Hayes 1969 29 75
Love this dude's voice and his interpretation/style. Reminds me of a Barry White version of Otis Redding (timing on his vocals).

11. In The Jungle Groove James Brown 1986 11 77.6
This has a better production to it, and arguably a more dance backing band instead of funk/jazz, which I understand the appeal, but for me, I'm prefer the former.

12. The Dock of the Bay Otis Redding 1968 75

I screwed up (didn't choose what to vote for quick enough and don't want people to vote twice) and so I'm putting this as an 11 for me (no points). I really don't think a 5 minute guitar solo fits in "my world" of funk. I know that isn't "correct" but it's how I feel. I appreciate this album and George Clinton is a genius, but I think I'd rather see Parliament here, as that fits my music aesthetics a bit more.

Bit sad Aretha Franklin and Parliament (which I like over Funkadelic) didn't make it didn't make the final cut, but overall loved this journey with ya'll!

Because people voted for Star Time already and I wasn't quick enough to change the game, I'm ok keeping that as my vote and in the running. People don't have to listen to it or vote for it, but it'd be unfair to remove it if already voted on a second time.
