Are we just defining "magnum opus" here as "very long song"? Can I include shorter progressive songs?

And as far as Oldfield goes I'd probably put Ommadawn before Tubular Bells.

It seems most of Dream Theater's catalog is composed of magnum opuses. Metropolis Pt 1 was the first and may still be the best of the bunch.

Yes. I didn't like the choice of Lizard as KC's masterpiece. Also Epitaph I find as one of the best prog pieces ever. I also find >90's underrepresented, i.e Porcupine tree or Wilson should be on the list (I would choose Anesthesize). Anyway, thanks for making this topic and out of the list I chose Shine on.

I was really tempted to go for King Crimson but I went with my gut and picked Shine On, an old favourite.

I have had a real turn-around on Prog music in the last 6 months.

I used to be really adverse to all of it except Floyd and King Crimson. But then I forced myself to listen to the entire Top 500 Albums in the BEA list. It took a year and a half.

Sorry I still hate early Genesis (apart from Supper's Ready which I quite like, esp the lyrics). But I have grown fond of some stuff by Jethro Tull, Yes and Rush and probably some other bands I forget right now.

By being patient and learning to listen to material which does not unfold in an immediately obvious way my experience of music listening has been enriched.

I can say now there are very few genres I dislike.

The same happened with drum and bass last year when I got some rec's of what I would call intelligent drum n bass albums. Before I used to think it was all a noise but now I like it - the good stuff anyway.

The only music I really don't like, apart from Gabriel-era Genesis is music that seems to lack intelligence, moronic stuff. Like some types of dance music, jungle or hardcore metal. However going back to Peter Gabriel I like his solo albums so go figure. Musical taste is strange.

At the end of the day you know what you like and you don't like.

Just because it's the obvious choice, doesn't mean it isn't a most worthy one!

That one blew my mind when I first heard it at the age of 12. But it still holds my interest to this day.
