Great rec. Can't go wrong with these two. Not sure why I've never listened to this before when I've meant to for ages. Halfway through and sounds incredible.

Similar in style and sound to Planxty (given these guys spent a bit of time with them it's only natural), Kevin Burke (The Bothy Band) was also a contributor across multiple tracks. All guys mentioned in this thread earlier, who all had a huge influence on Irish trad music in varying ways. Anyway, I don't even know where to go in terms of Irish folk music from here, there's so many different sides to it and it's developed in spades from the rebellion ballads and pub/céilí jigs and reels of years gone by, with many of the songs being heard on these albums laying their roots well over 100 years ago. It's hard to know where to really start as I said so I've picked and chosen various albums I've enjoyed down the years, some of which have yet to find their way to BEA (sorry, I'll get on that) and I'll pop back with more if I think of some other relevant ones/there's interest in them.

You are right The Waterboys have a lot of Irish members but singer and chief Waterboy and writer Mike Scott is Scottish. He spent a lot of time in Ireland and in America. I saw them live a couple of months ago. they were brilliant.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned this fella's solo work. Planxty get a mention but this album, and many others are great:

Other than Pogues, (and Enya, who I happen to like, unlike most people) this is the only other Irish band I can remember having their album.

Never heard of Lankum but got the album on now, very good. The only other rec I'd give is anything featuring Dennis Cahill and Martin Hayes, they have a few projects. Seen them live twice and loved them each time. This album is a favourite.

you looking for legit irish folk music? i grew up playing that stuff on the fiddle, and it doesn't get better than this:

Kevin Burke - this guy is the king of the fiddle. In Concert by Kevin Burke

Lunasa - very traditional, foot-stomping fun. i saw them open for a group once, and they were so good that just about everyone left when the main act went out on stage. people were there for lunasa. Lúnasa by Lúnasa

Solas - this group branches out a bit into singer-songwriter. their lead violinist is incredible, and she breaks all the rules. The Hour Before Dawn by Solas

Tommy Peoples - if you like ornamentals, this is where you look. this guy puts double stops, trills and rolls in every phrase. it's kind of insane sometimes. The Quiet Glen/An Gleann Ciuin by Tommy Peoples

Which gets a lot of love around these parts.

Christy Moore’s got a huge catalogue and is probably worth checking out - wouldn’t know where to start tbh...

Great recommendations, thanks guys. I actually know some of these like Van Morrison & The Chieftains, and I've heard a lot of good things about Declan O'Rourke as well.
@Fischman thanks for Celtic recommendations, I also find many of Celtic (especially punk) bands to be great live. Will listen to these.
The Book Of Kells sounds very interesting, as does Planxty (listening to it now). Will give all the listed albums a spin.

I'm a huge Irish/Celtic fan. Here's a handful to explore:

Roger Drawdy and the Firestarters. Based in the US, but thoroughly Irish in attitude and vibe. Mostly traditional instrumentation. Not at all big, but right up your alley here. GREAT live show!

Altan. Primarily traditional sound and songs. May sound different from your faves so far, but still worth a try. One of the most solid Celtic bands in history.

Silly Wizard. Scottish rather than Irish, but a super tight, killer band with a strong Celtic vibe.

Bothy Band. Super fun, high energy traditional sounding Celtic outfit

Connie Dover. A somewhat different sound, but I still have to put in a plug. Although from Missouri, she's created some magnificent Celtic music that emotes Celtic vibe like a local. But the real seller her is her unbelievably angelic voice. Otherworldly it is in its beauty. The album below is one of my all time faves in any genre (her other albums are somewhat less Celtic).

This one from 1992 is thematically based around the Book of Kells (widely regarded as Ireland’s finest national treasure). Its somewhat dated in its production (1992), but I think the ambition of the work and the cohesiveness of it transcends that. It kind of sounds like Enya mixed with prog-rock.
