If you’re looking for heavy, here are a couple of suggestions

Check out grand funk railroad. Maybe start with inside looking out off the eponymous album and the railroad off we’re an American band.

Porcupine tree are also a great band. Heaviest album IMO is deadwing. Try arriving somewhere and glass arm shattering

Good listening

I mean Rush is Rush. They've got a formula that few people bands have ever really been close too. However, two bands that come close are Porcupine Tree and Primus. Both bands have ties to the group. Alex Lifeson appears on what many consider to be Porcupine Tree's best album, Fear of a Blank Planet, and Les Claypool helped induct Rush into the Rock Hall of Fame and Primus has covered them several times.

Porcupine Tree

For classic rock/prog/punk (off the top of my head) try Montrose by Montrose, or Mr Universe by Gillan. The Boomtown Rats first album, Back in '72 by Bob Seger, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. Rainbow Rising by Rainbow. Strangers in the Night by UFO, Overkill by Motorhead. Machine Head by Deep Purple, Motors 1 by The Motors, Sin After Sin and Stained Class by Judas Priest. Live and Dangerous by Thin Lizzy.

So, as probably the biggest Rush fanatic on BEA, I'll try to help out.

The early Dream Theater album Images and Words is a big hit with fans of Rush's heavy prog period.

Have a listen to another great progressive metal group: Fates Warning. Their best album, chock full of progressive, but wonderfully melodic music, is Parallels. If you want something more in the vein of 2112, give No Exit a run.

You didn't mention, Kansas, but there's lots there to like if you're a Rush fan, especially the albums Leftoverture, Point of No Return, and Somewhere to Elsewhere.

If you're not too turned off by Christian lyrics, check out the album Celestial Messenger by Trytan. If you didn't know it wasn't Rush, you'd swear it is, circa 1978.

Check out Queensryche, especially Operation Mindcrime.

Lots of Rush fans also gravitate to Spock's Beard

There are a good number of obscure bands with strong Rush influence and sound. Look for (all available from CD Baby):
Ashland-Yin and Yang
Lord Only- Fear and Trembling
Dead Air Radio-Strange Frequencies

Oh, and lastly, if you're in the mood for straight up hard classic rock, you can't do better than Rush's fellow Canadian power trio, Triumph. Their best album is Thunder Seven, especially side 2. Allied Forces was their most popular, and Progressions of Power is their hardest rocking.

Hi, this is my first post on the forums here, but I've actually been a member for a year or so now; just never really had the need to. I have gotten into the dreaded "nothing's interesting me" zone, so I decided to recruit the help of the amazingly knowledges members of BEA. I would like to get new song suggestions on this thread that are in the realm of my music taste on this thread. So here's what I'm looking for...

I love classic rock, prog rock, and old school metal, and I somewhat like 70s pop, too. I have run out of songs for all the "big" bands of those genres, so anything that's not in the Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd/Iron Maiden realm is ok. Specifically, I would love song suggestions, not albums, as I don't have the time or the mental appetite to listen to them, hoping for something I like. Recommend the best songs of these bands that you choose to comment, and if I like them, I'll continue searching their catalog. Makes for efficient listening.
One more thing: I like long songs, that also have melody, not just a bunch of strange, experimental soloing. Think Rush. Thanks in advance!
