There is some sense there, but ultimately, it is a concept album.

More or less, the albums is based off of a band (Lonely Hearts Club) playing a concert (lead singer Billy Shears) and the 'concert' is the theme of the album.

It's a bit vague, and the concept is pretty much just the concept of 'making music'.

Now, for the poll.

Am I voting for the best album, or the best concept? 🤔 Because I have 2 different answers for those questions.

Out of this list, Sgt. Pepper's for fuck's sake, none of the others can even compete. But seriously, I wouldn't consider a concept album...

Best concept album? You might shoot this one down, but In Rainbows. I don't care what you say, it's definitely a concept album. 01 & 10. It was totally made to compliment OKC.

But not including that, Hospice! 😁

Don't forget three of the most epic concept albums of all time. I think a true concept album does need to have a story and not just a theme. Each of these use every song to tell in depth complete story.

Pink Floyd - The Wall (1979)
Queensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime (1988)
The who - Tommy (1969)

Oh yeah, I vote for Frank Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours (1955). I love that album 😄

Of course I'm here to Kamelot this thread up a bit.

A two-part concept album based loosely on the German play, Faust. Basically the main character, Ariel, makes a deal with the devil Mephisto (not really a devil, but a pretty deceptive archangel) in which if Mephisto grants him any wish or power than Ariel owes him his soul in death.

It's more complicated than that, but that's the general premise.

The band members describe it as a "debate between two contradictory pillars of 20th C. Anti-Humanism: The Futurists versus the Unabomber." The tracks flow into each other to create a continuous musical journey like DSotM.

Pretty high-concept stuff, but with a fantastic sense of humour. Probably the best moment is 'The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens the Discussion', in which mother nature declares war on humanity:

Eaters of the soil take us into the ground

Death by worm!

Eaters of the air drive us from the blue

Death by sparrow!

Eaters of the sea take us into the green

Death by eel!

Eaters of the scraps take in our beds

Death by dog!

Eaters of the soil take us into the ground

Eaters of the green take us into the sea

I lurrrve concept albums I have loads of competing choices at hand. If you count Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon as a concept album then probably that. I also love Porcupine Tree's 'Deadwing' which is essentially a ghost story, the rest I'll leave up to you to decipher. Then there is Camel's "The Snow Goose", a gorgeous instrumental symphonic Canterbury prog album based on a novel by the same name. There's my top three, please don't make me choose a favourite!

2112 certainly has a theme, but not anything like that. Keep in mind that it was originally released on two-sided vinyl. The first side was a full, gapless "concept album" (now translated as just the track "2112"), but side two was just a collection of three-minute songs that have nothing to do with each other.

2112, Lessons and Something For Nothing definitely have something to do with one another. Lessons even being very similar to the Presentation part of 2112, just told from the perspective of a school child and a headmaster. Almost in the vain of a track I can't currently recall off of "Crime of the century" By Supertramp.

'Tears' and 'The Twilight Zone' can also be connected to the 3 above 😄 Tears deals with the topic of "moving on" while 'The Twilight Zone' is about opening the door to the unknown and taking a chance, in the vain of "You can't have something for nothing". You may never know what you will find when you enter "The Twilight Zone" 😜

Thinking about it now I don't think "Following your own path" , as I said in my last post explains the album well enough. I'm going with "the individual" as my interpretation.

Okay, then. I can't say that Geddy Lee and company really "planned" that connection, but I can't say I haven't felt that way with other albums, either.

In fact, I should now say that, whenever I listen to Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes, it feels like a "concept album" about a rape therapy session. From the opening in "Crucify" to the ending yelps in the title track, the order really feels like a natural presentation of feelings.

Talking Heads- Remain in Light

Not traditional "concept" albums in that they don't pretend to be someone else, but rather that the album is dedicated to attacking a single concept with ferocious accuracy

Listen to it from the perspective that I replied to your PM about. You ought to notice that the tone of the songs flows along with that idea.

And remember that Catherine Wheel was heavily influenced by Pink Floyd, so I really believe what I mention was intentional. 😉
