This was really tough for me.

I wish JENNY HVAL's vocals were more solid, especially as they came in (it's not that she's not a good performer, rather I was underwhelmed and a bit turned off in juxtaposition to the the intro).

I've never really been able to sit through a car seat head rest album (to my fading memory)... I just feel like the songwriting and vocals and overall experience has been crap... and then this surprise. I actually liked it for the first time.

JENNY HVAL by the hair of my chinny chin chin (song vs song...otherwise easy win).

I was pleasantly surprised by Jenny Hval but my contrarian character makes me choose Car Seat Headrest here 😉

Yeah I don't hate Car Seat Headrest at all, I really liked his last his couple of albums but haven't been bothered to listen to a self-remake (I heard the original 2011 once) and these songs really are not changing my mind... and I don't think 10+ minutes automatically means "epic". And I just really love Jenny Hval and am indeed under her Spell(s) (I'll show myself out).

I'm slightly surprised at the light bruising Car Seat Headrest is getting here. I love Beach Life In Death, and both versions of the album, and if I hadn't of missed the nomination process I would have chosen a song from this album (Cute Thing).

I really like Car Seat Headrest, and Teens of Denial was probably my #1 from 2016. Twin Fantasy is probably in my top 10 for 2011. Hearing it re-recorded...but the same...was a strange feeling. Like listening to a really good Led Zeppelin cover band: Sure, it's good and all, but it's missing something very important.

This is probably the toughest match-up for me thus far. Honestly my vote could have went either way, but I voted for Beach Life In Death. If this were the final 2 songs I wouldn't have been upset.

i will say in interviews he was very mean to his old band back at W&M which is... not nice lol

Really digging the direction Jenny Hval's going... hope she continues to collaborate with the Dutch and Norwegian jazzers. Long Sleep was one of my favorites from last year. Really think she can do no wrong

Pretty cool seeing Jenny Hval kick Car Seat Headrest's ass so far. Love a good underdog. I like Car Seat Headrest. They are a good (if overrated & inconsistent) indie rock band. BUT i saw no reason for this album existence as I mentioned in my music diary.

Spells does exactly what its title says for its 6 minute run time. Between this and the Julia Holter tracks intelligent & beguiling art pop was alive & well in 2018. Listening to the rest of her The Long Sleep EP rn & its equally awesome.

I would likely vote for 'Spells' regardless of opposition, but man I hate Car Seat Headrest so much. People (not you people; IRL people) need to stop recommending his shit to me just because I like music. His shit is shit. It's boring and shit. I bet he's a bad person. On the other hand, I know Jenny Hval is a good person. She always does one of these bangers per release. Know all the love we gave to Holter this album? Can we give that to Hval next time? Because she nice. A vote for nice over shit.

Twin Fantasy is one of the most consistent albums of 2018 and Beach Life in Death is a good song from this album. But not the best. I have already nominated the one that is for me the best of the album (Famous Phophet Stars, eliminated) and Beach Life in Death has no chance against Spells which is for me the best song of Jenny Hval and one of my favorites of 2018.
