My favorites by far are Natalia Lafourcade and Café Tacuba.

I want to recommend some albums too, so here are some favorites that don't get discussed very often:

Ofrenda Al Mictlán by Juan Cirerol
Singer/songwriter who delves on corridos and country. Quite passionate. He gets lots of comparisons to Johnny Cash.
Listen to La Banqueta.

Méjico Máxico by Instituto Mexicano Del Sonido
Electronic, sample-based. Like (a less crazy) Avalanches. I you like this go to Nortec Collective next.
Listen to Drume Negrita.

Revés/Yo Soy by Café Tacuba
2 Hours, the first one almost completely instrumental. It gets compared to Kid A often, for the jump from an alternative rock sound to an experimental/electronic one. It's not easy to find, since it didn't sell well on release.
Listen to Guerra.

Metalmúsica / Aleaciones Aleatorias by Cabezas De Cera
Also 2 hours and leaning towards less accesible sounds (progressive and improvisational). It gets overlooked in favour of their self-titled, which is also great.
Listen to Nocturno Incandescente.

Hu Hu Hu by Natalia Lafourcade
I've come to find this album fantastic, but I like this art pop/indie pop phase of her career the most. So delicate. A few of the songs are in english, like Look Outside.

Hahaha, some parts of California may be an extension of Mexico, but for this purpose, it won't count as Mexican music.

Still, we have Mexican hip-hop. I don't know much about hip-hop nowdays (I've heard some songs from a guy called Alemán, and Cartel de Santa is a huge act), but the most successful band when I was younger was Control Machete, and they had collaborations with Cypress Hill.

So start with their debut album, Mucho Barato. I leave you with the most cypresshillian song of the band:

I don't know what you like the most form Molotov: the heavy riffs, the creative and ironic lyrics or the f#c% you attitude.

If it is the first one I can't think of any Mexican bands that have this thick sound. The two bass players in Molotov, create a rhythmical base that no other has.

For the other two aspects, I could think of Plastilina Mosh. They are oriented to electro pop, but they have an amazing album: ¡Hola, chicuelos!

To be honest I knew Murcof existed but never heard it until now. It's impressive!

It makes sense that you have heard him more than us. In Mexico, ambient and experimental electronics don't have much projection.

Not exactly the same, you won't find him in Spotify, neither here in BEA, there is this amazing composer called Ernesto Martínez. He has an album mixed and produced by John Zorn's label, called Mutaciones:]]

Not a true answer to the OP but if you're willing to set your sights down further into South America, I would strongly recommend Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov who has composed at least two of the most amazing works of the last 25 years with:

Cello Concerto "Azul" (2009)
Klezmer Clarinet and String Quartet "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac The Blind" (1994)

Honestly, "Azul" is among the most powerful, affecting & profound concertos of all time. And "Isaac The Blind" is in the upper class of the chamber music repertoire.

His St. Mark's Passion, a highly colorful and spirited Latin American/African fusion into Religious Choral/Vocal music, is also quite stirring and compelling -- well worth checking out.

Though I have yet to rate/rank the St Mark you can find recommended recordings of the other 2 on my linked "Best Classical Recordings" list below this post. Definitely an artist well worth sharing as he is among the world's greatest contemporary composers.

Anyway, Mexico's had some cool releases in the past few years. Always worth spinning a few tracks off of these:

Amor Supremo by Carla Morrison

Hasta La Raíz by Natalia Lafourcade
(+Musas)

Norma by Mon Laferte
(not Mexican, but based in Ciudad de Mexico for a while)

And there's been a resurgence of ambient music in recent years that's always worth checking out.

I find Mexico's more into live music though... there's good local stuff, but it doesn't particularly go on wax. Rock dominates.

Typical ones I know or enjoy would be Cafe Tacvba, Caifanes, Zoe, and Natalaia Lafourcade.

Others may include the glitch artist Murcof, and the classical artists Silvestre Revueltas and Carlos Chavez.

Excellent, if you like Rodrigo y Gabriela, my recommendation is Cabezas de Cera (Wax Heads).

This band lead by the Sotelo brothers is as prog and experimental as it can be. The thing I like the most of them is that besides using traditional instruments they create their own.

Well, I've already posted a recommendation for Rodrigo y Gabriela fans, so let's move to Natalia Lafourcade.

She comes from 2 different movements one is the Mexican Folklore and the other one is the singer-songwriter women that emulated from Kate Bush, Tori Amos or Fionna Apple.

If the thing that catches your ear is the traditional sound of Natalia you should listen to Lila Downs a Zapotec (an indigenous group from the south of Mexico)-American singer that has an amazing voice. Her best album is called Sandunga.

If you like the singer-songwriter aspect of her music, listen to Julieta Venegas. She started in a ska band named Tijuana-No and moved towards a rock-pop approach, but you can still hear some Mexican folk influence. Her best album is called Bueninvento.
