Did you listen to Masters Of The Sun Vol 1? Because I'd argue that album might have those Pharcyde cues you are looking for.
Joking aside I think American Boy was him... and that was in the game and got kinda far? idk... all I know is dude seemed to be a really good beat producer, but was kind of wasted on mediocre lyrics, etc.

Honestly, I don't think Will.I.Am had too many blusters. He was more eclectic in his choices (his love of french house came out of nowhere) than a lot of other mainstream contemporaries.

Oh I don't disagree, I think he's super talented/creative, but totally not respected as such... I mean tell me a "serious music fan" who takes his solo work or especially his work with Black Eyed Peas seriously, but would put Kanye on a pedestal immediately over him without even thinking twice.

I think people moved away from him when he prioritized club/dance stuff over lyrical stuff. I still like his Daft Punk/Justice-inspired beats, though.

Well I don't know if I consider myself a serious music fan but I'd say The Black Eyed Peas as well as Will.I.Am were completely overhated within pop music of the 2000's. Albums like Monkey Business and The E.N.D while weren't the most "intelligent" for pop or hip hop, were quite colorful, charismatic and quite fun. To the point where I would have them somewhere in my year end or maybe decade lists. And fun while might not be a factor for some listeners, it does play in for me. For an underrated beat Will.I.Am ever did, I would mention Talib Kweli with Hot Thing.

But back to fans ditching the house sound, for me it was more about The Beginning not being as enjoyable, and those qualities that people don't like about the Black Eyed Peas become more apparent. That album had some good songs but it wasn't there. Up until there 2018 album.

I whole heartedly agree with your first paragraph and I do deem myself an avid music fan (don't like the word "serious" because of what it insinuates), and I think if you take fun into account you're already miles ahead of other "serious" music fans.

About the hate. I don't think The Beginning made it worse, though it might've, but The E.N.D was already overhated to infinity upon its release. When something gets extremely popular there's always gonna be people who think it's undeserved. And the Peas could be attacked from every fucking angle: hip hop heads bemoan their decision to go electronic (they probably already were complaining with Monkey Business when they clearly went pop); stale-ass critics could complain about the lyrical content; of course rock purists were easily to jump upon the bandwagon of hate; then you have also techno/house purists who see their chance to signal their producer knowledge saying it's "easy to make" and such while not having made one beat ever (a bit like someone else in this thread now that I think of it). And the fact that it isn't particularly genius musically either makes it easier for people to fall back to these invalid criticisms.

Romanelli wrote:

I can appreciate a good beat, and a good track. Taking an 8 second loop of something someone else likely created (or that it took you a minute to "create") and calling it great. is weak, and I'll stand by that to the end. You want to impress me with a song? Take some time and write it...don't feed me cheap shortcuts with zero effort and zero creativity.

Did I say only lyrics are important? Did I say anything about chords? I'm saying that the beat that the OP posted is cheap, uninspired, and not in any way great. If you want to read all of that other crap into my comment, knock yourself out. But I'm not going to lie and say that beat has any redeeming qualities whatsover, just because you'd rather that's what I said.

idk man, "beats don't make tracks great. It's what you surround it with that matters." was a rather general statement, so don't act like I'm reading into shit, I was just trying to guess what else it is you enjoy from music. So explain how you can say "beats don't make tracks great" and still "appreciate a good beat"? What's that "what you surround it with" you're talking about? So I thought you would be one of those types that think it's just about lyrics, guess I was wrong. What is it then? Vocals? Because anything else you throw into it is part of the beat, isn't it? So what do you mean? The guitar solos Kanye lets someone else play on mbdtf? The jazz trumpets on Kendrick's TPAB? If anything takes zero effort or creativity, it's that (even if they played it themselves). Those solos didn't even have to be good, because it's not on a rock/jazz album, so only not rock/jazz listeners are gonna hear it. And honestly, I don't think the guitar solos are very good on mbdtf; I liked it much better when Kanye decided to make a guitar solo with his voice and autotune and distortion (and a lot of people with me). And guess what? Zero effort, it was completely improvised. He was just harmonizing with the melody. And even if you dislike the solo at the end of Runaway, there's gonna be a song you're gonna love that has zero effort in it. That is, assuming you can actually genuinely enjoy music, and don't just listen music to appear cultured.

Is equating difficulty with quality not a cliché by now? Or are you one of those people who show you every song consists of a finite choice of chords "so only lyrics are important". As if there doesn't exist a place on the internet which literally contains everything that could be written with 300 words.

Stench smells so strong it's insanitary
Cause you can sense me a mile away so Chanky
With the jungle Funk sound from Serengeti
Meaty, Fat, Nasty like miss Fat booty's tights
Gettin' dirty like mudfights and dirtbikes

Turning these droors black they used to be white
And we shitin' on these tracks that you gonna' need to wipe
The odour's so contagious that it shows up in your dream

Man you could pick me out like food in between
Your two front teeth cause you be lackin' the streets
We got beefy ass beats that we bumpin' in the streets
We so nice n' sweet like steak box n' feet
Sour underarm Funk you ain't washed in a week
And man we be reekin' every day or weekend
Ok I checked it out. There are some great tracks. For the first eight songs I was feeling the album. Then it went downhill and the rest was mostly songs that shouldn't have been released. Just really poor quality control. The culprits vary, from wack beats to wack hooks to wack guest verses. If a song on Purple Haze is mainly about women/sex, it's basically guaranteed to be bad. I hate it when an album is so front-loaded that I end up continuously revising my opinion downward as it continues. This is more or less the same problem I had with Come Home With Me - a bunch of standout tracks outnumbered by the number of mediocre to bad tracks. Purple Haze has a slightly better ratio though, enough to barely keep it in my library for the time being. 3/5.

Jim Jones was infamously bad at rapping at this point in his career.

However, suggesting giving this to Freeway or Beanie over Cam is just silly. He's a far better rapper than either, and I would also argue that he was at least as good as Jay around this time (and slightly later), although this album doesn't necessarily focus on his strengths - the ability to mix hilarious, outsized, absurdist boasts with poignant, pre-fame memories via endless quickfire internals - in the same way Purple Haze (much of which was recorded around this time) did.

But yeah, his verse is still absolutely solid. No guarantee whatsoever that any of the others you named would've handled it any better.

My rationale is not that Freeway and Beanie are better rappers than Cam - I would need to dig more into all three discographies to decide. But they definitely wouldn't have given two verses to Jim Jones, who is the real anvil around this song's neck. So yes, while there's no guarantee, I would absolutely take my chances.

Ah man, you need to check out Purple Haze. Cam was arguably the best rapper alive at that point. So fun.

I guess I should. I started with Come Home With Me because it had the hits, but found it disappointingly mediocre overall, so I didn't have the appetite for an even longer follow-up. As for Freeway, I'm three releases in. I really enjoy Philadelphia Freeway and Broken Ankles. The Stimulus Package is pretty good too. And I've only heard individual songs from Beanie, plus a lot of features.

The beat for 'Hate It or Love It' is incredible, 50's opening verse is incredible, and The Game is... almost entirely forgettable on his own song.
