"Darkness on the edge of town" by Springsteen is 1 of the most powerful albums he made.

I'm getting into "skeleton tree" by nick drake and the bad seeds. This album is amazing. Very deep.
And then to loosen things up - some johnny cougar. Great rock n roll . So under-rated.

Yeah it's an interesting mix of doom-and-gloom, hopefulness, and accepting mortality. I think "I Want to Be Well" is actually specifically about illness, though probably more mental rather than physical.

It's really more the artwork that's apocalyptic than the thematic material, but the music was apparently heavily inspired by the artwork.

I never realised age of adz was post-apocalyptic themed. I should pay more attention to lyrics/album titles!
I've been getting "now that I'm older" in my head a lot this week. Probably because it's a soothing song for a crisis.

I've been getting interested in lo-fi / "outsider" house and techno over the past few months and I've found it works really well when chilling at home. It's party music, but made for hiding in your bedroom. Some recent great finds in this regard are this weird slushy hypnagogic thing:

I keep listening to Rodgers and Hammerstein songs like the music from Oklahoma, The King And I and Sound of Music etc.

I made myself laugh aloud singing Getting To Know You in a silly voice the other day.

It's not just hilarity, it really raises my spirits.

I am finding comforting music like Gram Parsons, U2's Joshua Tree, Clannad, Enya, you know soul-enriching spiritual music helps right now.

Plus I watch shed-loads of comedy videos on Youtube. My faves are Billy Connolly and Richard Pryor. It's important to keep our spirits up!

Interesting choices. I like the idea of getting a city-space or any kind of sonic journey from home right now.

Totally get just wanting feel good comfort foods as well. Actually I could go for the first Avalanches album as it does take you on a bit of a journey too.

For some reason I'm feeling drawn towards Berlin Bowie, Talking Heads (or maybe My Life in the Bush of Ghosts). Probably for that claustrophobia and twitchy nervousness. Maybe some Soft Bulletin/ Yoshimi era Lips for the existential themes.

I'm pretty intrigued by that Godspeed album now 🤣

Too many heavy things might not be good but I will probably go for something heavy. On the book front, I read the Plague by Albert Camus a few years back. That was a dark read back then and would but a pretty intense to read right now. I'm certainly considering it though 😲

I've been preferring hopeful happy albums even though my usual pick for when I'm feeling down is depressing albums. But this feels a lot different and I think happy is the way to go. If you're looking for happy, I've been meaning to explore city pop and some of the genres it influenced (like vaporwave) for a while. Just revisited this one, which was the only city pop album I've heard, and it almost feels like being outside in a busy city even sitting alone in my living room.

For You by 山下達郎 [Tatsuro Yamashita]

I also can't recommend this one enough. My AOTY, listened to it on a walk yesterday and it hits a really introspective, hopeful tone.

But if you're looking for something melancholy, I have to imagine American Football's debut sounds pretty good about now. "Stay Home" has never had such high stakes.

Lastly, if you're reeeeally looking for something appropriate (in a miserable way), you could listen to Godspeed's Blaise Bailey Finnegan III. But I warn you: it's almost too on the nose.

Whenever things seem sad/bleak I like to listen to music that is the exact opposite - warm and happy. This is one of my go-to albums when I'm down:
