I can see the Tom Waits connection, but I didn't get that kind of feeling from the album. It feels too much like its own sound. Besides, I enjoyed that album more than I enjoyed anything by Tom Waits.

It's great! A total art pop gem. I don't know Apple too well, but now I'll definitely dive further into her discography. She's never clicked with me before, but I really like this and can see why it's getting all this (well deserved) hype.

It's the best thing I've heard this year, and better than her 2012 record, which is the only one I've heard. Is it 10/10? After 2 listens it's pretty hard to say, but I don't think it'll become one of my favourites ever. Her last record landed somewhere in the middle of my 2010s chart, this one will probably be top 50 of the decade (wild guess), but that's not a 10/10 for me. So great? Yeah. Impeccable? Not really. Tom Waits is better.

My dissenting opinion is that it's the best thing I've ever heard from Apple, but I have no idea how some albums seem to get immediate universal acclaim. I keep hearing words like dissonance and Tom Waits floating around this album every where I go, which is baffling on several levels to me. I guess if you want to call it dissonance in comparison to other things that she has made? Seems like hyperbole to me.

I've listened to it once, pretty drunk and somewhat distracted, so I'll give it more spins before forming a more decisive opinion. I do think it needs a few days to let the initial rush of a new Apple release die down a bit, I have to admit few artists can make a new release feel like a big event anymore like Fiona, don't think anything similar has happened since maybe Science Fiction (derp). And I guess Pitchdork still giving something a perfect score is like electing the friggin' Pope of albums. Still, it will be interesting to see how it all holds up a couple months from now.

Been listening to it for the morning, it's pretty good, will make my 2020 chart somewhere for now anyway, I feel it's relatively on par with the rest of her work, so yeah, think that covers my thoughts so far.

So from late yesterday to earlier today, when I realized that Fiona Apple was gonna release a new album, I was caught off guard. Not only has it been a long time since her last album, I realized I never listen to any of her albums. So that is what I did. Went through all four records and then gave the new album a listen. And I have to admit, when I woke up today and saw things like Pitchfork giving the album a 10 and RYM average hasn't drop down below a 4.00 as I write this at this moment, I got quite excited. After listening to it, I do think it is a great album. And I can get some of the hype this album is getting. But AOTY? No.

Now don't get me wrong, it is one of the best records of 2020. But after listening to her entire body of work, I would say it is more ambitious and has a good amount of killer cuts that makes it better than her 2012 album. But to me doesn't hit the full package of her first three records that had the majority of the tracks with a full body of sound throughout the entire tracklisting. Because while the drumming is very unique and does have a lot of presence, I kinda wish that the tracks that I thought were just good, had a little more to keep me enamored. But still a great record and would recommend for at least a listen.

You've got one of the most diverse charts on BEA, so I'd assume comparing apples and oranges would be easier for you than for most people. I know a lot of epople who say that apples and oranges thing. Besides, when you take into account that it borrows from pervious albums to create something new, it's easier to find similarities to make this orange taste more like the original apple. Fetch the Bolt Cutters is a huge stepping stone for 2020. The reviews are already more than favorable, the people are going crazy over it, and it's quite possible that Apple has outdone herself. Fetch the Bolt Covers mixes the roots of her early career with the experimental sound of The Idler Wheel and maintains that balance carefully and cleverly through the whole 50 minutes. So is this not the current AOTY or what?
