Yeah, a reboot might be the best option if anyone's up for hosting. I think "best lyricist" or "best singer-songwriter" would be good options. There is another tournament just started so we could potentially come back to this one later on.

Yah, I mean Frank O'Hara's words read better off the page than anybody nominated here, yet I don't fancy hearing them put to music. Which is why I voted for Rogers over Cohen.

While yes, it's based on lyric writing, I feel that lyrics also rely on how well they're expressed musically. I've heard amazing poets write rubbish music to back their lyrics. So even when someone asks me about lyrics writing, the music is still essential to the expression of those words.

Y'all can interpret it how you like within the realm of lyrics, but for me this is how it makes the most sense.

I concure and is why I chose who I did. There are amazing lyricists who write shit music and amazing musicians who write shit lyrics.
A great songwriter writes amazing music with amazing lyrics or makes his awkward/real/artistic lyrics amazingly musical.

I also understood 'songwriter' as 'writer of songs', not just 'lyricist'. Would change one or two votes for sure - and quite possibly Prince vs. Cohen.

Oh, that's not how I interpreted the tournament. I saw it as the overall song- just that the songwriters would need to fit a more formal sense of being a songwriter by writing the kind of songs that have lyrics.

Otherwise, yeah, if you just extract the lyrics then it would always be Cohen- he was literally a poet as well. But it doesn't make sense to me to do this.

Perhaps we should change the title to Best Lyricists? 😕 This has come up more than once... just saying. If it was 'songwriting' there's a good chance I would vote for Prince too.

And Tom Waits was my #3.

Picture in a frame has literally made me cry.

Waits was on my short list but I dropped him fairly easily.

He was my favourite singer-songwriter for about 5 years (maybe more). I have several of his albums but I seem to have grown out of them a bit. They just feel less essential than my absolute favourites. Maybe veering towards sentimentally a little too much for me now (that I'm old and cynical).

I might stick Blue Valentine on today though as its been too long.
