I wasnt alive to see it at the time, but I have always had a hard time believing gentle giant opened up for black sabbath, I cannot think of a more mismatched pairing, its not surprising to hear they were treated poorly by the audience expecting something heavy. I would have loved to have seen that disaster.

I saw voivod open for Ozzy in 2002? I remember there set well it was the first major concert. Awesome show

                          Less awesome of a story:

Saw Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl.

Initially, my friend and were like, let's see if we can hear them since it's an outside concert and we'll just walk around nearby. Realized quickly that wasn't working for the opening act (don't even remember who it was - ), and we got some scalped tickets for something like $70.

Unfortunately I stood in vomit for half the show. Otherwise it was great. (Supporting Hail to the Thief). The end was pretty mind blowing. They programmed this ending where they one by one left the show and sequenced it in this climactic way that then layered off until the last programmed tracked finished.

In between the booking and the actual event, Arctic Monkeys released the fastest-selling British debut album ever, and became the biggest band in the country. I was offered Β£300 for what was initially a Β£17 ticket outside the venue. For some reason, the bands agreed between them that they would stick to the original running order (pride? respect? etiquette? contractual obligation?), and literally 80% of the crowd disappeared after Arctic Monkeys, leaving Maximo Park playing to a crowd of about 500 people when, just ten minutes earlier, there had been about 2500 people going wild. I guess I stayed out of embarrassment, or because I was 15 and just loved watching live music, but it was truly surreal. Felt very sorry for them, despite their insistence on putting in a hugely energetic performance, and their seeming refusal to acknowledge the situation. Gained a lot of respect for them, even if I can only remember one of their songs - must've been hard work, especially as I'm guessing the same thing happened on every night of the tour.

Trip of a story.

Jimmy Eat World was FANTATSIC live. The other two actually kinda sucked. I mean it's kinda a known fact that Weezer has (had? I've heard since they toured with the Foo Fighters they are better?) a crappy live presence, but at 16 when I saw them Weezer was like top 5 bands in my teenage mind, so I was kinda surprised. But yeah - Jimmy Eat World was freaking amazing live... like possibly top 10 artists ever live... dunno if that's still true, but when they were touring for Bleed American, holy shit. So much energy and cool adlib stuff they'd add to their songs.

I saw Weezer on their Red Album Tour in 2008. They were fine. And ditto on Jimmy Eat World. I saw them in 2017 opening for Incubus. Outstanding performance. So much energy. They hadn't lost their touch one bit.

Ok - yeah I mean Weezer didn't suck, just no energy. The songs sounded good, but the light show and confetti and giant W were the only interesting parts of the performances... could've just stayed home and listened to the record and probably would've had a similar experience (probably not fair to say, but that's kinda what it felt like). Just meaning there was no real crowd interaction - just some nerds playing music. Which hey, that was me when I was in a band - completely boring. I'd just expect more from a Weezer level act I suppose (even if you could argue, well man, you just don't understand weezer man, that's who they are - and yes, I get that all too well). I guess if I were in Weezer I just wouldn't tour then and focus on making better records... haha. I mean I get that's where the money is in the business... anyway I'm rambling.

Actually I just paused and remembered thinking the Red tour would've been fun because didn't they encourage people to bring instruments like kazoos and "play" along? (by the way, that's possibly my last favorite Weezer record (couple ok ones followed, but nothing as good as Red since imo. For context, my show was for the Green album.

Cool to hear after nearly 20 years later, Jimmy Eat World still are full of energy.

I saw the NME tour with Mystery Jets opening, followed by We Are Scientists, then Arctic Monkeys, with Maximo Park headlining.

I've only seen country singer Gretchen Wilson one time and she did her songs just before the night's closing act which was country band Diamond Rio. Gretchen was more traditional than I thought that she was going to be which couldn't have made me more of a happy Holly. πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„

P.S. That was my second of the three times that I have seen Diamond Rio. They are awesome! πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„ :)

Diamond Rio is a name I haven't heard in a bit. They were residents at a casino I'd travel past as a kid and saw the add all the time.

Yes I suppose it was my curiosity to find cases in which the opener later because a "higher rated/ranked/regarded artist".

And have other stories, such as yours which are also interesting. Broad in scope, but kinda the trigger to start the thread was - huh, isn't that cute "when they were" young stages of their artistry and then to see what they became later.

Of course it works out that everyone starts as an opener. Some almost always stay that way I suppose is also true. It's not kind to say, but I guess it's a second rate act. It requires a lot of cultural impact for an artist to make a "world wide" tour and not lose money. You can't suck and do that.

In literary theory there's a concept of Freud's Oedipus complex concept being applied to writers/artists. The desire of the infantile id to replace father as companion to mother is the Freud theory, but a twist is the artist to replace the other "master" artist as "the greatest/best or at least equals" in their great accomplishments.

Anyway, I'm a literary weirdo, so probably just ignore this response.

Thank you for responding! What you say about staying an opening act doesn't bother me any. If some singers have never gone to headlining status, maybe its because they feel that they aren't good enough for such a role. In my opinion, it really shouldn't matter. There being a spot for everyone at all should be sufficient enough. Who I feel for most are young enough kids who are there and the last person to sing is who them kids have come to see. I pray for those who only end up missing their favorite because they can't stay awake long enough. πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

God bless you and them always!!!
This was over a decade ago, but I bought tickets to see Lunasa open a show once. I don’t remember the headliner, but I left three songs into the main act’s set. Lunasa probably should have been the headliner as Iβ€˜d estimate 2/3 of the audience left after Lunasa tapped out.

CA Dreamin wrote:

I thought of The Monterey Festival, where The Who and Jimi Hendrix Experience played before The Mamas and the Papas. A festival though, not a traditional concert.

I was once saw Incubus open for Linkin Park. You'd think the Incubus was popular enough to be a headliner. I've actually seen Incubus as a headliner, and were opened for by Jimmy Eat World.

Slightly different topic (although the topic idea was broad to begin with)...

Went and saw Weezer and Tenacious D and Jimmy Eat World was opening for them.

Weezer felt like they were all on lithium. And it could've been they were.. haha (funny not funny... sorry, not to laugh at mental health at all (I'm one to talk), rather the ironic/juxtaposed situation).

Also cool stories folks - the personal experiences of SRV and Prince were the most interesting

The Purple One, of course, was in the early stages of his developing stardom thanks to the reception of Dirty Mind and Controversy. But he was not, to put it charitably, well received by the Stones' audience, and at an L.A. gig he was actually booed off the stage. By the time the tour reached Seattle he was gone.

When I saw the Stones with Thorogood in '81, the middle act was Heart. No problems there.

Had a similar experience to yours though in '82 at the same venue.
Headliner: The Who
Middle act: Jethro Tull
Opener: John Cougar-same phenomenon (not well received by the Who/Tull crowd) and same result (booed off the stage, only lasted six songs - Jack and Diane was the last straw).

Of the concerts I've been to, I'd have to say that there was something interesting about the opener(s) at almost every one. I could bore y'all with personal anecdotes all day long. So here, I'll just share the one that popped into my mind first based on what I was listening to this morning.

1983, McNichols Arena, Denver, Colorado.
I was off to see my beloved Moody Blues for the first time. The opener was a guy who very recently was starting to get some local airplay for a song called "Pride and Joy."

This was, of course the great Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I was completely unprepared. I'd only heard "Pride and Joy" a couple times and even with that song, I really had no indication of what this guy was capable of. I tell you I had to call for the arena forklift just to get my jaw off the floor. Damn! My buddy and I were straight up stunned for 60 minutes.

I wondered where this music came from! Of course, to some degree, it came from the great musical mind and fingers of SRV himself, but it also came from the musical lineage of which he was a part. SRV became not only my springboard to loving SRV, but also to the entire blues genre and its history.

Of course after that, I ran straight out and bought Texas Flood. And picked up every SRV release on opening day. Sadly, our time with SRV was to be all too limited. In this case the loss was even more tragic, as he had recently kicked his substance abuse demons and released a comeback album that saw him return to full form + added maturity, only to come down in a helicopter crash of all things.
