Touché! Still I think the word great is overused. How large is the consensus, how varied are the users?
+ you're right, the more your listen to music, the more enthusiast you generally are, so that some albums will (sometimes) seem overrated to someone who listen to less music. At first sight, you could think that a music specialist would be more picky about music. But is it so?

If anything, 500 albums is much too short of a list to show all of the influential/great albums. They’ve barely touched some diverse genres like electronic and metal, and even with all of the rock, hip hop and pop stuff that they’ve chosen, there’s still a lot of classics missing (understandably).

That being said, people define “great” differently.

It's good that Rolling Stone have shaken things up a bit (a lot!) and disrupted the " canon " of greats and it's good they are being more representative of other genres.
But I can't help thinking they've picked a lot of the wrong albums or maybe got some of the artists right but I'd have chosen different albums,

It's a pretty good top 10 though and it's a joy to see Marvin Gaye at number one.
That is a legendary album. It really speaks to me.

But Taylor Swift and Harry Styles?

Revisiting it from Crash's livestreams, it's so as horrific as first time. However I like/love about 30% of the list, and I'd put even less amount my favorites/the greatest. 20% of the list are awful albums that should never be near it.

That is a great hip hop 100. Some I'll need to check out, as I've never seen that list before. There's some questionable shit on there too; 2001 at number 10 being an obvious one, but it's still better than most hip hop lists.

M.O.P. in the top 20 is absolutely correct though. Any song off of ' Warriorz' can make even the most milquetoast man flip his wig.

I didn't really care which lists I took recommendations from. In my youth I had a simple set of rules for truing out new music: if it was on a few lists, or I've heard a bunch of an artist's songs on the radio, or it sold well, I'd check it out. I stayed fairly mainstream with metal and fairly underground with punk, so I ended up loving metal/punk styles like grind, metalcore and crossover thrash.

Big up Hip-Hop Connection's '100 Best Albums 1995 - 2005' list. If you know, you know. Which, y'know, you won't, because you probably weren't a budding, teenage, British hip-hop head when it came out. But that shit was transformative. Maybe the single biggest influence on my listening habits.

So which magazine do we attach our strings to now? I don't now about you, but ideally I'd love a magazine that treats jazz and classical with the same respect as mainstream radio, but I have a feeling searching for such a magazine through the top 100 lists for everyone of them would be an exercize in futility.
