Fatima. I like Cash a lot, but wouldn't vote for him as representing the 00s. That surely is a splendid testament, but from another decade (plus it really does sound like that).

seeing as covers of songs from other eras are eligible, i might be nominating beethoven and rimsky-korsakov for the 2010s.

His cover of Hurt was an important piece of the 2000s and certainly one of the best renditions of covers in the 21st Century point blank.
I'm voting on significance, quality, and depth.

I don't think a song has to be representative of a time period to be the best song from that period. Indeed, the greatest songs are timeless and able to stand independent of the era in which they were recorded.

Also, whether or not a song would go over well at a rave is completely irrelevant as to what is the best song.... unless the category is actually "best rave song."

Some comments:
on the rave comment: I suppose that if we would do the same contest on best songs of the 2010's we would be surprised how many people would nominate the latest Radiohead, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Sun Oil Moon, Mount Eerie, all artists which I would consider their latest output to be too down to consider putting in the list of best tracks of the 2010's but were a big part of the decade; and then I don't even mention the James Blakes of this world.
On the comment on the fact that this song doesn't really represent the 2000's: I have the impression that some people want this contest to be a contest of hits/singles. As this is an album based site many people like me won't vote for singles but tracks they consider the best tracks from their favorite albums: this even means that I personally would sometimes chose album tracks which haven't been singles on an album full of hits just because those latter ones were overplayed on the radio.

But I suppose this kind of discussion is at the core of what people would consider the best tracks of a decade so it's good that different opinions are being ventilated on the subject.
Yes, there's a lot of music club goers would boo, including some of the best music ever written.

RE: pulse of 2000s
Also Hurt/Johnny Cash was a massive part of the 2000s. Maybe some of you weren't born yet, but it was a big part of radio play. I was in high school and all the high school kids went out and bought Johnny Cash. It was a massive Johnny Cash revival. According to Wikipedia, it's his only Studio Album to go platinum. His prison tour for San Quentin and Folsom also went platinum, but those are live albums.

But alas, going to the point made, this song isn't going to win because it's cool at a club, or because it's singing range matches Axl Rose, or because it's the new shit of the 2000s, it'd win because the way Johnny Cash connects with this song is unparalleled at an emotional level.

The vote is about what best represents the decade. Not sure if Johnny Cash singing a cover version actually does that very well to be honest. But I do love his spirit that's for sure 😄

Johnny Cash basically is better than anyone in this tournament. Sorry for those of you who don't like him/recognize his legacy. Zero of the other artists likely have museums and movies and the such made after them because they truly aren't as legendary.

But one likes what one likes and that's ok too.

Dude has like a three note range. There are rappers who vary their pitch more than Cash! And what he delivers within that extremely narrow range is delivered completely deadpan... flatter than a soda left uncapped on the counter overnight.

But as you say, people like what they like.

hehehe...

Yup and then there's Axl Rose who has an amazing range and yet I hate anything he touches.

Yup. Having a technically excellent or purely aesthetically pleasing voice alone is no guarantee of artistry.... the music world is littered with outstanding voices that aren't at all engaging.
