From the perspective of someone who is not really into metal or any of its subgenres , I have to say that I find their self titled album as by far their most accessible and enjoyable. But if once in a blue moon I am in the mood for this kind of stuff, I would definitely pick Ride the Lightning over Master of Puppets.

The biggest difference between the two is the lyricism imo. Kill 'em All is balls to the wall silly rock lyricism, while Ride the Lightning has some stories, most of which don't concern drinking, headbanging and living fast. Both are loads of fun imo, in their own way.

This is possibly the worst take I’ve heard on BEA so far. And I’ve heard a lot of bad takes. Ok, Lulu isn’t as terrible as a lot of people claim, it’s not one of the worst albums ever. But it’s definitely not better than any other Metallica studio album, except maybe St. Anger.
Edit: This sounded too harsh. Like you do you, but I’m just saying you’re objectively wrong 😁
I completely get what you're saying, but I disagree in a way. My metalcore (more accurately, punk/metal in general) phase has taught me that both dirty and polished production are perfectly fine for metal, depending on what you're doing. I think the production is perfectly suitable for some of their albums, but not all of them. After Metallica they pretty much stuck with standard studio production and I can imagine quite a few RtL fans being very disappointed overtime.

I guess I'm the dumbass who likes Master of Puppets more (from memory... it's been at least 3 years since I've listened to both).

I could make some dumbass excuse that I really respect Orion from being a bassist, but that's not even close to why. I guess I don't see the album as bloated, rather feels a bit more mature/refined/well balanced.

I typically get bored as hell with prog... so dunno... I see it differently is all I suppose.

Also I had such high hopes for Lulu and was so sadly disappointed.
That's perfectly understandable. MoP gained more attention due to cleaner prodution and likely due to a higher average track average. Maybe RtL was a little too heavy for its time to kick off the same way the lighter album did.
Haven't listened to a Metallica record in a long ass time but I'm also firmly in the Ride the Lightning camp between the two. RTL is just far stronger and more consistent record. It thrashes harder, drops the bloated prog elements and has a more defined atmosphere that lets me enjoy the world they make more.

RtL gets me amped and pumps me up. MoP... doesn't. Not that all music needs to pump me up, but I've always thought that MoP sort of lacks for a metal album, while remaining a pretty solid prog album. Even apples to oranges, RtL is leagues ahead in my ears.

I think RtL is the consensus among "serious" metal listeners as well. I don't think there's much to separate the two in the end.

Ride the Lightning is better. MoP, while still good, was the beginning of their decline, as song structures were becoming increasingly long-winded, bloated, and predictable, steering away from the elements that made KeA and RtL so enjoyable to listen to. RtL is straightforward, fun, and raw. It's shorter and tighter than MoP. I prefer Tracks 2, 3, and 4 off RtL over anything on MoP. RtL is better, that's a no-brainer for me.
