Cool idea, I used to make mixtapes/burn CDs with songs from each year for people's birthdays back in the day. I'd try to theme them too, like songs about alcohol for a 21st birthday (legal drinking age in the US) or songs about driving/road trips for 16 (driving age in the state I grew up in).

After nitpicking how to decide what year an album should be assigned to, I stuck with the BEA default ranking of year of release. I very much agree with Yann that the release date is like the "birth to the world", thanks for putting it that way.

Debatable! The release date is like a birth to the world. The world is important, and music is meant to be heard. Not to mention the importance of labels in the process of this birth, and sometimes even in the creation of music.

Interestingly enough Spotify lists this album as 1933 (kinda rightfully so, even if it's actually over a decade period of time). Even if anywhere else it has a million different releases from 2001 until 2011ish. What's funny is Spotify doesn't really have a search feature for year of release as far as I know, so interesting they decided to adjust for "reality". Also interestingly enough the other Josh White Album has a 2020 release because someone cleaned up the recording (I think it sounds like crap and prefer the original, even with the scratches, etc.)

When it's like a year off... idk, I guess that's important to indicate that an artist did something first, but other than that I don't see the benefit.

But yeah, it gets my chaff when I can't list out a 1950s list of recordings in a comp or something as a 1950s release because it was released in 2010. It totally doesn't belong in a 2010 list, yet the recordings are incredibly important to 1950s or 30s or 40s and not everyone released good albums or one at all for that matter.

Those are the dates of recording, when the work was completed as you hear it, a more notable date than when the label decided to release/sell it. Albums by less popular, less lucrative artists tend to be more prone to wider discrepancies between the dates.

I agree with this so much, particularly for live albums recorded in a single set that get released decades later. However this gets a little dicey and difficult to determine "when the work was completed as you hear it" especially in this day-and-age when an album like Life of Pablo actually got edited POST-release. Release date is more standardized. That said, to each their own. I like the way BEA does it but I occasionally get annoyed when there are decades between when the work was completed and released.
