While we're talking about soundtracks, one of my least favorite movies that others seem to like is No Country for Old Men. Which...doesn't have any music at all. I think for that reason I found it very unsettling the whole way through. Shows how important music is in a movie for me.

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned. OG Twin Peaks, Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud, OG Blade Runner, Morricone (I prefer A Few Dollars More score, but The Thing, The Good... , Days Of Heaven, Hateful Eight and some others are close), Mica Levi, Vince Guaraldi, Baby Driver, Into The Wild, Superfly and the recent ones like The Queen's Gambit, Chernobyl and Uncut Gems.

If you haven't heard Julee Cruise's solo album which features a lot of Twin Peaks songs, that's a good rec. As is Fire Walks With Me score.

I don't know if this is the technical definition, but to me "soundtrack" means a collection of (mostly) already existing music put together for a film/TV series, whereas "score" means original compositions for the film/TV series (often sans-lyrics). That said, the soundtrack/score for musicals are typically original, and are often titled "Original Soundtrack"/OST, so I'm not sure...

The Queen's Gambit (Music From The Netflix Limited Series) by Carlos Rafael Rivera (might have a bit of recency bias on this one but it's SO good)
EDIT: this link is to the score, not the soundtrack. The score is solid but the soundtrack is what really shines and firmly pins the series in the 60s.

There's some fantastic stuff in here, and if you like skiing/snowboarding or extreme sports in general I'd highly recommend a watch. In particular the use of Damien Rice's "Eskimo" for backcountry Alaska skiing is INCREDIBLE. That starts around the 4 minute mark, but the highlights are in the 6-7 minute range.

Got to this thread very late and a lot of favorites have already been posted, shotout to streams for that amazing Popol Vuh shoutout, hayden for the cowboy bebop, fantastic planet (better soundtrack than a movie tbh) and Mica Levi shoutouts (though I prefer under the skin's strings) and any and all Oh Angelo shoutouts.

Would also like to shoutout Susumu Hirasawa from P Model. His prog pop scores of Satoshi Kon movies are a big part of the successes of those films. The original UK's Utopia soundtrack is pretty amazing too. A lightly industrial and IDM influenced Pikmin-y type thing
