I suppose I could easily spend 2021 catching up on all the albums I missed in 2020.
And I am not even kidding!
I have been too busy listening to albums in the Overall Chart. Some of them are new or new-ish.
Still to hear the Fiona Apple one but I am on it!
This week....

There's more ways to learn about new music than ever before. This internet thing alone screams "no excuses."

For the last decade or so, I've had another great source; my kids. Now 21, 24, and 26, they have kept me in touch with a good number of newer artists across a variety of genres.

For my part, my obsession with jazz has also kept me in touch with new music. There are so many new directions and fresh ideas coming out of the genre, there's never a shortage of new discovery to be had there.

I thought that question was sort of about the following divisions

1) new-to-me music, the desire to find new music from whatever time period. as people get older, even this appears to be a struggle. many people just like to stick with what they know, but I think a person is staying young at heart if they're finding new experiences, regardless of what year the music came from. we gotta have some people keeping an eye on the contemporary music, since that sustains music going forward into the future, and also all these discoveries of older music wouldn't really be possible if someone weren't paying attention to them in their original time. But it's not something everybody has to be doing.

2) "technically" new music, the sort of thing that may have come out in the current year but nothing would really have stopped it from coming out decades ago. or maybe also the sort of thing that is totally in a listeners wheelhouse, something that doesn't demand anything from them that they haven't been asked a million times already. this category could probably result in contentious debate.

3) genuinely new music, the sort of thing that couldn't have really happened earlier, or something that forces the listener to grapple with making sense of what they're hearing in a way that they haven't previously.

in a way, you could have someone who seeks out new musical experiences from previous years that challenges themselves, and someone who seeks out familiar musical experiences from the current years, and the person who is technically more devoted to contemporary musical experiences is experiencing less "newness" than someone who sticks with the past.

the topic there can get complicated for sure! I don't think there's really any wrong answers here, like it's fine to be focused on personal growth or to be focused on the perpetuation of a tradition or to even be some corny old person dressed in ed hardy clothes (or whatever the modern equivalent would be) so long as you're happy.

I'm mostly certain the OP was for music that is newly released? Or are you talking about what does a release even mean anymore, cuz that's a totally different conversation.

I think I've gone full circle at this point, I recently passed a decade on BEA which is surreal, I was still a school kid when I joined and now I'm (apparently) grown up. I started off into the classics when I first joined, then rotated into listening to everything new coming out and hyping them up to no end before just going off and getting obsessed with weird lesser known music, then I reached the bitter and cynical stage and didn't listen to much of anything and now I'm back on board keeping up with music, both old and new at my own pace. Life circumstances naturally help, I've moved around a lot, lived in multiple countries, worked multiple jobs and haven't always been the happiest, nowadays though I'm in a job I love in a place I love and I can listen to music for most of the workday (minus the odd call), allows me to soak it all up, I'm probably watching less TV (but ironically playing more video games), reading more and so on, I dunno, but life is good at the moment and I my music listening patterns appear to reflect that.

Has Romanelli been censored? 🤣

Anyway, new music kinda hasn't been my thing for, well my whole life. I really cared about certain bands and would go to album release parties. I was at the actual release party where Foo Fighters played the album from start to finish and then signed it.

There's definitely excitement there, so if you have the time and I don't know if the kids still do street teams, but if you love an artist, join that street team. You get inside that artists new releases.

But no, TRL when I was a teenager was something I saw like twice. Radio really didn't get me THAT interested in new music.

Friends and family have always been my biggest resource in music, and I suppose as the OP stated, sometimes when you get old your group of friends shrink, and you move away from your family.

So really since like 2011 when I joined this site, how I find "new to me" music is through this site, recs from ya'll, etc.

Having said all this, if I wanted to be a new music enthusiast, then I'd be subscribing to all that new music release shit, and listening to 20k releases within the first 8 days of January. So if you want to, you CAN do that.

Maybe the real question is more about motivation to listen to new music. I'll tell you this... which is incredibly ironic that a weak sauce single from a band most people have lost respect of gave me a strong cathartic moment about suicide and self reflection to inspire me to do something I've never done in my entire life. Listen to 250 or so albums from a single given year (2017). I mean keep in mind, while spotify had been a thing for me for 7 years prior, I was more interested in music history/culturally significant artists, and with a rich music history past, I spent a lot of time there. Listening to full discographies of artists like the Beach Boys, a group who I only marginally appreciated before.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is that sometimes you gotta find that ONE song that's new that really resonates with you, and if you are on this site THIS much, you probably have addiction problems (sorry for being this blunt), and that ONE "hit" will make you want to listen to 250 albums of 2021. Maybe.

Right now I have probably another years worth of music projects of music released in the past to get into new music, but that is one thing I want to do, re-assess 2010's cornucopia of music and see what I can make of it. Same will be of 2020s but likely even deeper and deeper into this black hole of music that's being amassed. Kinda makes me excited and nervous about the future of music.
