I was gonna say Foo Fighters seem to early, but then again, they've been around for over 2 decades now, about as long as Jay-Z's been making music. Funny how Jay's 90s albums seem so much farther away than Foo Fighters, idk.

I think the inductees make sense, shame about Chaka Khan and Fela Kuti not getting in but I'm sure they'll get there.

Agree that the "early influence award" seems odd.

I'm legit surprised Iron Maiden didn't make the cut, especially considering six were inducted. They feel like R&RHOF canon. Only interesting sidenote is Gil Scott-Heron is getting an 'early influence award'. Kraftwerk did as well, which feels like a weird cop out tbh. Should just be in the hall.

Looking at the first few pages, I don't think BEA will be too happy with this selection 🤣 (which was... predictable).

Very fair. Disraeli Gears is one of the most overrated albums in the rock canon imo.

Yeah it's not the best for sure. I do freaking love Sunshine of Your Love, arguably their best song, really is to be thanked to Jack Bruce, not Eric Crapton. (I'm kidding about the name, I don't hate him that much, but thought it funny).

I feel like Eric Clapton is more like right place right time musician, not because he did anything interesting himself... somehow just rubbed shoulders with the right people. I mean from 100k feet, it sure feels that way.

Both of those questions boil down to what people consider rock and what people consider proper fits for the hall. I'm just going off who I think should be there based on who's already got a slot. Rock and roll? I'm sure Sinatra influenced some. Dylan, Springsteen, Elvis, Winehouse, Willie Nelson, etc, and In The Wee Small Hours was a huge influence for the concept album. Not to mention the persona of the non-music side of the culture. The attitude, rebelliousness, the swagger— what wasn't rock'n'roll about him?

As for the second question, rock and roll wouldn't have happened without the blues. Big Joe Turner, Muddy Waters and Otis Redding were pretty much inducted off the bat (John Lee Hooker not too long after). Don't see any reason why not to include early influences. Eric Clapton's in there three times, but how many riffs has he taken from artists who haven't been included once? Big Bill Broonzy wants a word :lol:. And a decent amount of names on that list I threw up were in the thick of it in the 50s-70s.

Hope this isn't coming off as defensive. Both are fair questions, and I'm not overly fussed about the hall to begin with. Just tossing some names out there I think deserve a slot. (Or okay— at least to be mentioned in the 'influences' category).

Good points re: Sinatra. Of course you're right about the blues (although I wouldn't exactly consider Otis Redding a blues musician). I agree that it could make sense to give "standard" inductions to early blues artists because there's a direct line to rock. As for Holiday, Cole, etc. where the connection is weaker, an "Early Influences" designation seems logical.

Keep in mind that Bob Marley is in, and Jamaica's not typically considered to be a Western country. I guess I could have said from Africa/Asia/South America, but then it wouldn't be clear why I was grouping them together.

Jimmy Cliff's in there too, which is great to see.

I suppose it's Rock n' Roll hall of fame, not Rock Hall of Fame, so that's why I brought it up... it was indeed intentionally celebrating the founders of rock n' roll in the beginning. But yeah I support your thought. Are you kinda saying pop just falls under rock when talking about a very large umbrella? Just meaning rock n' roll kinda was the "first pop" music?

Yes and no. Pop definitely existed before rock. But in the rock era, most pop overlaps with rock or has been influenced by it, so they fit together when you only have three very large umbrellas.

Somehow I was reading about an artist who was inducted into the UK Rock n' Roll hall of fame... which then died. Not sure if I should laugh at that or be sad about it. So apparently it's a thing/was a thing.
