Controversial choice but Rolling Stones for me. Even there classic albums have a track or two I find insufferable, with the exception of Exile, I love the variance of that one.

Yes are a band I respect more then I like but I can't really say there's anything there I would call great to my ears.

Obligatory Weird Al Yankovic reference. No albums that can be hailed as a truly great one (no dig to him, he's just clearly not an album artist), but then again no dud albums either (unless you're counting some of the compilations, which I don't)
I go:
3/5 = good
4/5 =very good;
5/5=great

Some but not all the 5/5s I'd call classics so in theory I could subdivide into 4.5 = great and 5= classic (though I usually don't bother).

A good album is enjoyable but belongs to the time when it's released.

A very good album has more enduring appeal and is well worth revisits.

I tend to think of great albums as having a distinctive influence on other artists as well as having enduring appeal from start to finish.

A classic I would say probably has significant influence on other artists for many years. It would probably influence multiple genres in some way.

Actually, that is the first time I thought this out in any detail!!

Yeah, I can't fault them and would go with 4/5 as well (easily). For me, great means a 5/5 classic or near classic (4.5/5 I guess).

                          My 10 cents worth...

Giant Sand
Super Furry Animals
Beach House
Camera Obscura
Supergrass
Ron Sexsmith
The Charlatans
The Divine Comedy
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
The Lemonheads
Fountains of Wayne

All the above are very consistent and I listen to them a lot. No bona fide great albums though.

To La Tengo and Felt are the cut off point. I'd say they each have three or four borderline great albums.

I suppose naming artists you don't rate could cause controversy. Especially when they are popular.

I think I will just stick to talking about artists I like from now on.

There's nothing wrong with talking about artists you don't like. If you mention them then others can explain their views on why they are so great.

I suppose naming artists you don't rate could cause controversy. Especially when they are popular.

I think I will just stick to talking about artists I like from now on.

There's nothing wrong with talking about artists you don't like. If you mention them then others can explain their views on why they are so great.

With the Beach Boys there are some amazing moments on Pet Sounds - God Only Knows is sublime - but Pet Sounds never really gelled as an album for me.

I protest strongly! The tracklist is very album-album in my opinion. See track 2 (You Still Believe in Me): slower, not like a single. Same with Don't Talk. And the beautiful instrumentals nicely placed in the tracklist.
In that sense, the last 3 tracks are very album constructed: the emotional I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, then the instrumental title track, and then the closer Caroline No.

I made one in a poll a few weeks ago but I think I'll just focus on making a very accurate list. I need to think about it so I don't end up contradicting myself. But Led Zeppelin is going straight to number 1 and Kate Bush and Pink Floyd are going to be pretty high too.

When I started getting inyo prog I hated King Crimson. Now I love them.

I think I will give some of them another chance.
I used to hate The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway but now I like it. Same goes for quite a few albums by a lot of my mentioned artists.

I found 'Court of Crimson King 'just ok when I first heard it now it's in my top 100 and I've seen them play live.
It's a mystery to me why I like the prog bands Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator and am not so keen on other prog bands. And I really like Krautrock and Brian Eno.

By the way I hope I don't have it in for indie bands. I like a lot of indie bands, just not over-keen on the ones mentioned although they may have great individual songs. I think Float On by MM is a winner.

Maybe I should make a list of all the artists I like, or think are great, and then you could disagree with some of them.

Maybe try giving some of those albums another chance. When I started getting inyo prog I hated King Crimson. Now I love them.

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds is my number 2 and the Smile Sessions is in my top 100.
Talking Heads - Remain in Light - top 100
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois - Top 100, amd Carrie & Lowell is incredible.
The Strokes - Is This It is pretty awesome.
Arctic Monkeys - Another great garagey debut.
Metallica - Greatest metal band ever.
Genesis - Maybe they aren't Yes but they are wonderful.
Nick Drake - Umm...
The National - Boxer and High Violet are phenomenal.
Sonic Youth - Sister and Daydream Nation are two of my favorite early alternative albums.
Tame Impala - Innerspeaker is gorgeous.
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi is in my top 100 and it's one of the best examples of modern psychedelia.
Modest Mouse. Do you have it out for indie rock? 😜 You just named several of the best indie bands.
Yes - I repeat, stop right there.
Bon Iver - I'm not terribly into Bon Iver but I don't deny the talent.
Animal Collective - Incredible band.
LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing at MY HOUSE.
Rush - Moving Pictures is perfect.
Vampire Weekend - OK, I never gave a Vampire Weekend a five-star rating, but their last two albums were a lot of fun.
Beach House - I fucking love Beach House.
Charles Mingus - RED ALERT!
Talk Talk - I really wish they didn't break up. Laughing Stock was GREAT.
Fleet Foxes - I love their first two albums.
Frank Ocean - Arguably one of the more creative R&B artists of the millennium.
Interpol - This is true for most of their discography but TOTBL is a 9.5.
Belle And Sebastian - Beautiful stuff. Easily a great band with great albums.
Beck - It's been a while since I've heard any of his best albums so I'll get back to you.
Pavement - Crooked Rain is flawless.

Nice take

I did say I might upset some people...

Honestly I have listened to SO many Yes and Genesis albums and they just never clicked for me, maybe with the exception of The Lamb and Foxtrot for Genesis, which I feel are good, and Fragile, Relayer and some parts of Close To The Edge by Yes. And The Yes Album. All pretty good. But for me - not great. Rush have made some good music but no particular album stands out as great to me. And I have heard quite a few of their albums.
Sorry if this is sacrilege to you!

Sorry man!!!!!

Here are the artists I consider to be great, from my list:

Beach Boys
Talking Heads

Just for me, neither has made a great album.

And artists I consider as very good:

Metallica
Arcade Fire
certain songs by The Strokes
Flaming Lips have had their moments and Wayne Coyne is v talented.
The National
Bon Iver
LCD Soundsystem (they are really growing on me).
Talk Talk
Belle And Sebastian

There is no shortage of talent with quite a few artists on my not great albums list but they haven't moved me the way my favourite artists have.
