I think that's why In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is one of the best albums ever. It just hits all those marks perfectly. �'� I could say the same for a few other albums of course, but that one stands out the most for filling in that list.

The best ones, and are a very few ones, are the ones that I go and listen when i'm searching for a certain emotion and the album always gives the same powerful sensation (sadness, melancholy, power, etc) so it always fits perfect with my mood.

The great ones are the ones that have got some outstanding tunes and they offer you a nice travel listening to it in general.

At the end are the ones which allow you to escape. 🤔

It is a tough question after all, isn't it GARY?

When I started the thread, I was thinking it's mostly about production values and engineering for me these days... but there's a lot more going on besides that. And comparing it to physical attraction isn't awfully farfetched, either. A lot of the music I listen to is cheerful, pretty, and not too dressy. It's nicely developed, and genuine. It's solid... meaning, in terms of an album, that there's consistency from beginning to end. For me, a great album should play really well all the way through.

And then there's that remarkable quality that can't be explained. With people, it's called love. With music, it's kind of like "I can't believe I like this as much as I do, but I do... and so what?" That quality of going beyond what can be easily explained, is probably one of the best feelings I get from listening to songs.

It has to make me feel some emotion. If not that, than it has to make me think. Also, liking it helps a lot too. But most of all, the idea of taking the listener on a journey is big for me too. This is why I love Astral Weeks. It takes me on a journey every time I listen, while meeting the other criteria as well.

For me it is ALL ABOUT the emotions and how the music makes me feel. An album has to stir and churn everything inside me.

I have to feel pain and pleasure, sadness and happiness, heat and shivers, energy and power, tranquility and peace, the past, present and future - all on one album. My favourite albums make me laugh and cry in equal measure and have the power to pull me completely into the music and forget the world around me. Listening to good music makes me glad to be alive and sharpens my senses so that i tingle and know the value of life... if I don't get that from an album, it might be technically great but it will never be the greatest.

Really needs to shake me to my core. I don't care if it's three amazing songs and ten shitty ones, if those three songs can make me feel legitimately sad, furious, excited, etc. then I'm going to call it a great album. I don't place much value on consistency if all that does is give me something I won't remember anytime soon.
