It's been ages since I've given Genesis a proper listen, but I checked it out here and that might be their best and would possibly make it onto my list, perhaps between 6.0 and 6.7. I'm hardly listening to music right now and even when I am it is only barely above "casually". I am pretty caught up in cinema, particularly acting performance revisits, evals, updated rankings at the moment ... but may add this Genesis track to this list soon as it is probably deserving.

Fyi, I am revisiting cinema partially as a temporary break from visual art/painting (after pretty exhaustive revisit, study and analysis of Michelangelo's works especially, that I needed a short break from), but I am now getting more caught up in cinema than I initially expected, so said "break" might go on longer than anticipated.

DelBocaVista wrote:

I noticed that White Light/White Heat remains at 8.7, despite Sister Ray being downgraded a bit (8.9 to 8.6). Do you now think more highly of the other tracks or of the overall continuity?

I need to revisit it, but at this moment I think WL/WH is either 8.7 or 8.8 and the additional tracks add to the overall rating more than not. So the additional tracks combined, and w/o including Sister Ray, should be about 6.3/10 or 6.4... Though sometimes I think it's a little higher which could still be justified because the album has borderline continuity that maybe detracts very slightly from the "sum" of its parts (emphasis on maybe).

...And sometimes I think it's more like 6.0, 6.1 w/o Sister Ray... (which would reconsider the overall rating or would mean SR got upgraded to make up the difference)

(Note that there is also taking into account that the portion w/o SR is more than half - 22 min vs 17 so would affect the overall rating a little bit more if divided up that way)

Regardless, I don't think the overall rating is less than 8.7.
So sometimes SR drops a little, or vice versa -- one or the other, with the other part making up the difference. But the overall rating is either 8.7 or 8.8.

-Fight the Power - Public Enemy
-In/Flux - DJ Shadow
-N-Er-Gee Crisis Blues - The Residents

Thank you!

N-Er-Gee Crisis Blues should be added. Daddy is a strong possibility that I would need to revisit to determine. In/Flux is an interesting idea that I don't recall offhand and I'd have to revisit as well. Kim is a maybe. For Fight the Power it may depend on how/if I change or add to the ratings to better accompany shorter tracks. It's tough for shorter tracks to make it because they don't usually develop enough emotional/conceptual/creative impact by the time they're done to make it above 6/10, even if they're "on pace" to do so, and "per unit of time" can make just as much of a contribution to the overall rating of an album. So in terms of relative value, the best short tracks are just as worthy as many of the best longer tracks -- it just might not be best reflected by an "overall" rating, but would be better reflected by something closer to a rating based on "per qualitative pace/per unit of time". That would put longer and shorter tracks on equal ground and I've considered possibly doing a sub-list for this, below the main one, or maybe having "per unit of time" ratings in parenthesis/brackets to the right of each of the main list entries. Just not a priority until maybe I'm working on this again. But these are all good reminders for if/when I do so and N Er Gee Crisis Blues should be on here any way for sure.

N Er Gee Crisis Blues is a truly bizarre song that will probably never be replicated. I would say that Kim is probably the 3rd best rap song ever (IMO). And I'd say In/Flux is probably DJ Shadow's best work, with Step/Long Step being his 2nd best.

Also, I forgot to mention "Zaar" off of Peter Gabriel's Passion; and "I Do Not Want This" from Nine Inch Nails. And I've always thought "The Sprawl" was Daydream Nation's best song, or maybe "Trilogy" if you count it all as one song.

Thank you, maybe I'll start updating this again once I've tapered off from paintings a bit. Though I also have my sights on Classical, and some Rock reviews/analysis, so... I dunno

— “Eskimo Blue Day” – Jefferson Airplane – Volunteers – Track 7 (1969)

This is an amazing epic with the most remarkable lyrics about ecology and keyboard work (listen carefully) from Slick, and equally good guitar interplay between Kantner and Kaukonen. On a third listen, there is nothing I have heard from the Airplane to compare with it. It’s strange, and was as early as the late 1970s, to think that American FM radio might have played a song like that in the late 1960s.

Excellent pick! Yes, Volunteers is probably my favorite JA album (After Bathing at Baxter's challenges), and that is one of three songs I would most strongly consider from it (Hey Frederick, Wooden Ships).

I'm curious of what you think of that Steroids song, if you ever get interested enough to check it out. It's definitely more electronic than anything on Exmilitary, and has movements. And I'm referring to the one-song EP of Steroids. Not the "record store day LP."

Yep - an understatement haha - a very religious individual and singular genius, one of the most intellectual people to have ever lived (many consider him the premier Renaissance Man, the premier Polymath), plus we're talking 15th/16th century Italy here so there would've been utter disgust at today's music in general, though that's an unfair comparison because there's 500+ years in between of civilization and different societal/cultural norms. Leonardo was mostly producing art works for an aristocratic class or highly religious community.

Intriguing catch! I haven't heard it yet and it doesn't appear The Notorious PS has rated it yet even though he gives it a short review.

Funny fact: I was just (very casually) listening to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy while the vast majority of my attention was giving Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper some pretty serious study. A few songs into the album I stopped and caught myself in the absurdity and irony of it and wondered how disgusted Leonardo would've been 🤣

Thanks I'll check it out. I updated this list just now -- or at least a "lazy" update for now... Just fixed most of the ratings above 7.3 on only selections that were already there (so dozens, hundreds?, still need to be added).
Also I'm very confused as to whether that 4th freakout actually appeared on the pre-remastered versions of the album, or if it's only a Sonic Boom addition, as most sources seem to indicate the former but discogs, which I guess is one of the more trustworthy sites, doesn't think so.
I wonder if you still have the pre-remastered version, or just simply still remember its content so that you could help me with this puzzle.

My impression was that what's labelled as the fourth freakout on the Sonic Boom 2011 remaster is actually the fifth, and what was originally the fourth on the vinyl LP has been lumped in with War Sucks on the remastered CD. So side A ends with War Sucks+free form freakout (either split or combined depending upon the release), and side B starts with what Sonic Boom calls Free Form Freakout 4.

As for the confusion about whether Sonic Boom added a free form freakout: it didn't, but a very common CD release has one of the free form freakouts cut (I think it's one of the two freakouts that follow War Sucks, I don't remember which one now), while Sonic Boom retained it. You can find this cut version on Youtube; even the opening sounds different (the "crash" right at the beginning is missing).

I see, thanks!
