Old Chestnut by Ned Collette

(Probably the least extreme of these albums. This is a gorgeous and somber singer/songwriter album that sonically works in the slow, drowsy, minimalistic contemporary folk style. If you love Cohen, maybe you’ll love this?)

Hate In Me by Moss Icon

(Probably understandable considering their classic compilation of all recorded works includes this. But man this is some of my favorite emotive hardcore and incredibly influential to the sound and genre in the decades following its 1988 release.)

The Complete Pet Soul by Splitsville

...and I was thinking about maybe bumping it off, in fact. It's one of those albums that has a few (in this case, five, maybe six) really, really good tracks on it, and the rest are... just okay. What they did was to add 7 tracks to a 4-song EP (which they only sold at the 1998 Poptopia Festival) to make a so-called "Complete" version, but TBH only two or three of the added tracks are up to the original EP's standards.

Maybe I'll go and listen to it again right now... :-k

This is on just two charts (both mine). Yeah, I added the album, I also think it's great. Not to be confused with yet another B Boys Best Of, it is a tribute album that was recorded in Gasgow, with many of the biggest names in Glasgow's indie pop scene getting involved. It's quirky stuff but really true to the spirit of the Beach Boys and genuinely one of my all time favorite albums (narrowly missed my overall chart). The album even came with an interview with Brian doing a track by track commentary on the covers. He was really excited to have Alex Chilton on the record (because of the Box Tops not Big Star though 🤣 ) Anyway, this is super charming and nicely weird tribute album.

I follow the Smithsonian Folkways label and get lots of their new releases, so there's been many of those I've added to the database, and several times they've gotten a reasonable following on here. More often than not, however, they get very little attention. Dom Flemons' latest is one that comes to mind. Two chart appearances, both mine

He seems to have put a lot of effort into these, so they deserve a mention. I suppose I'll plug the entry in Step's chart that was from mine. During the recording of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, a number of prominent LA jazz musicians got together and recorded a bunch of music adjacent to their backing jazz orchestrations on To Pimp a Butterfly. Afterwards, they began performing together (sometimes as "West Coast Get Down") and recorded a number of albums together. The most famous of these is Kamasi Washington's The Epic. In my opinion, Uprising is even better than The Epic. Definitely not as... epic, but still powerful. More geared towards jazz fusion or funk than The Epic's spiritual jazz.

Don't Breath a Word of This by Kevin Tihista's Red Terror
This is the album that prompted me to start this thread. It's only on three charts: two of mine, one from UNCUT magazine. Admittedly, it was through UNCUT that I discovered this album. It's some really good Elliot Smith/ Beatlesque pop rock. Tihista deserved some more success, or at least a memorable moment on a tv soundtrack. I distinctly remember the UNCUT reviewer writing that you would not find a more lovely song in 2001 than the title track and it was a fair point.
