Okay, but KC Accidental hadn't already made an album called Broken Social Scene prior to their going off and starting Broken Social Scene. 😐

Hmm... Another almost-example might have been Casiotone For The Painfully Alone (aka Owen Ashworth), who released a comp called Advance Base Battery Life in 2009, after which he changed the name to "Advance Base." But he didn't then release an album called Casiotone for the Painfully Alone under the new name, so he doesn't qualify (though he could, at some point in the future).

Come to think of it, something like this would almost have to be a solo act using a name that's either really sales-averse (like Casiotone etc.), or already trademarked (also Casiotone), or such a common term that it's impossible to get high rankings for it on search engines (like The Streets). So the person switches over to the new name, but doesn't do so good commercially, so he/she starts thinking "maybe nobody knows I've changed the name - maybe I should release an album whose title is the old name because that's the sort of thing that weird guy on BEA might notice."

Whereas if it's a band, and one or more members of that band go off and form a new band named after one of the band's albums, they probably can't name a new album after the old band because the old band might sue them, assuming they haven't done so already (for using that album's name as their band name). Maybe I would even sue them myself, because this is making my brain hurt.

Both of these are Mike Skinner albums, apparently.

Given the vast number of albums that have been made over the years, I'm sure there are other instances of this... I just can't think of one off the top of my head. It seems like this kind of deliberate brand-confusion might be a little self-defeating sales-wise, but what do I know.

Just out of curiosity, is this the first time someone has released an album and then used the title of that album as the name for a side project that then released an album whose title was the original band name?
