I think you introduced me to it. It's definitely one of the fewer recent CCM releases that actually sound inspired and full of life, and as a Christian, that is refreshing to hear. Gordon Mote is like the Billy Joel of the genre.

So glad to have introduced you to Gordon Mote. His genre is actually Southern Gospel though, not CCM. I really enjoy him. Besides singing, he's also a great pianist and he's also a producer and song writer.

Bandcamp has chosen to compose an unranked list, sorted alphabetically. Some great picks in the bunch, and still plenty I've never heard. Finally got around to Witch's Zango yesterday (an excellent comeback... makes you wonder what that 40-year gap would've produced— tonnes of Talking Heads vibes).

Moral of the story on their 'essentials' page is than east Africa had a time to shine this year (Kenya's Kabeaushe, KMRU, MC Yallah— all of which are on my own list for the year— not to mention efforts from Slikback, Lord Spikeheart, KayCyy, and Nyokabi Kariũki's excellent Feeling Body). The shoutout to the late Emahoy Gebru is an excellent recognition. Hoping people give that one a listen. Uganda also had a strong year with strong outputs from Nihiloxica, Ocen James, PÖ, and one of the year's best records from Nakibembe Embaire Group. The Nyege Nyege movement has been super exciting, and I'm looking forward to wherever it takes us.

(The Habibi Funk series is a blessing... 5 excellent releases this year— their latest issue from Rogér Fakhr is incredible)

(including the previously mentioned Witch and Nihiloxica records).

Looking forward to getting around to what I don't know. Particularly the albums by Tele Novella, Edsel Axle, Karen y los Remedios and Jane Remover.

Thanks 😄 Especially glad to see you enjoyed the aforementioned three^ (Giske has obviously been inspired by Stetson, but he veers towards the minimal rather than Stetson's (sometimes) maximalism). Both are extremely impressive works. And Canto Ostinato is a lovely take on the work. Usually I'm not fond of porcelain cover versions, but there's this lovely super-cleanness to it. Sushi-esque.

And fun experiment Tap 😜 I've run through it a few times— just got a 'This year was mediocre and I only need one word to prove it: SZA.' ... which, erm, brings me to:

It's just a list, blah blah blah, and for the most part it's fine, but... SZA??????? Geez. Very disappointing. Especially considering it's a 2022 record. Was hoping for Sufjan, but oh well.

Oh nice glad you're both enjoying! And oh I'm so glad it spit out the Ryan Davis album, I've been rly digging that one in particular recently.

Regarding what this thing is, it's basically mad libs. A series of statements that have variables that get filled by a single entry on a list. Like for the one that is centered around rock music, it's

[A band] and [another band] are [statement that establishes these first two bands as a part of something, and then establishes a contrast with] [a third band] and [a fourth band].

For example, that connecting statement could say that the first two bands are "contributing thoughtfully to the rich history of rock. But some people have no respect and just want to tear it all up, like" two other bands. But I also tried to include as many instances where the opposite statement could be made, like I've got one that says something about how the first two bands are addicted to tearing up the rule book, and the latter two bands are the ones who respect history.

So yeah, just a fun little toy that can hopefully spit out some funny statements while simultaneously linking people to a wide variety of music.

Compared to 2021's 543 albums and 2022's 1049, I have only heard 60 this year. But I plan to get more into what has been released this year, by January. My most played album of the year is Hope by NF, but due to filler, he didn't make my top 10 so far. Here it is:
