Pioneering album for the funeral doom metal subgenre. Sets a standard for funeral doom metal in both pace and heaviness. They could've gone deeper with the guitar tones, but they kept them airy enough for a foggy atmosphere instead of intense gravity that weights you down. I love the swirly, cheap synthesizer in the background. Interestingly, it makes the album pretty. Thergothon crafted a concise sound that I never really get from other funeral doom metal acts. And then, of course, they vanish. Damn shame.

This might be one of the most "May-sounding" albums I've heard. I personally prefer the free jazz sound of her earlier works, but this album is still an excellent entry in the Alice Coltrane anthology. While her typical primary instrument is the harp, she dominates an interesting sounding organ that's almost snake-like. It's one of her dense sounding works-- not meaning hard to digest. Rather, it is more centered and grounded instead of that whimsical cosmic feel she has to her best albums. Those digging into Alice Coltrane's catalogue, please do not ignore this entry. I played the Speakers Corner pressing of this album and it sounds incredible. The organ fills the room and everything feels spiritual.

I listened to this via vinyl by Pure Pleasure records and it is a phenomenal pressing. Very lively, indeed.

Quick story before I provide my thoughts on the album. I remember this being one of the first albums I discovered through BestEverAlbums-- so we are talking 2013-14 here. I chose to listen to this album simply because I liked the orange color of the cover and I was looking for "indie" music. My understanding of "indie" was so shallow at the time. Anyways, I remember being bored and disappointed with this album when I first heard it. I honestly don't think I've heard it again until this year. Pretty fun/interesting to see how my tastes of matured over 10 years. I was impatient with slowcore. I mean, how do you expect someone whose only exposure to music was radio-friendly stuff to suddenly love slowcore?

Anyways, here I am 10 years later revisiting an album that I figured I should love now-- and I do! What a sincerely sweet slowcore album. I've seen many people describe it as an accidental masterpiece and I agree. There's no way the band knew they would craft a timeless masterpiece when they recorded this album. I love the off-key singing. It's charming and works very well. The guitar does not feel purposeless like some slowcore albums. It carries weight and gets slightly psychedelic. The bass guitar is warm and smooth and the drums sound fantastic. Absolutely no misses on here. I don't have a single problem with this record. Wasn't expecting to fall in love with it this deep. Perfect late spring and early summer evening music.

God damn what a solid improvement from Morbid Tales overall. I always forget how much I love this record and I’m not sure why. I love how thundery the guitars sound and how the drums sound like clay (I swear I mean that in a good way). Idk why metal albums don’t sound like this anymore. The longest jam on here is 28 minutes. Technical skill certainly is not its strength. What I find this album so appealing is the mammoth sound and its surface energy. It's noisy and deeply psychedelic. It is meant to overwhelm you. This is no Jimi Hendrix or The Doors or Tame Impala psychedelic rock. This is raw experimental stuff that the audience of its time wasn't even ready for. Noisy music fans like me should definitely check this out. I proudly own the 3LP release and blast it loudly.

Reign In Blood by Slayer

While I do overall enjoyed the tracks of the record, I find most of the b-side, with the exception of "Raining Blood," to be mildly forgettable. But the A-side and the crown jewel finale is insane.

A Blaze In The Northern Sky by Darkthrone

That ritual ambient intro for "Kathaarian Life Code" (which is also how they close the album) is so chilling. I couldn't think of a more perfect intro to start a black metal record. One of the pioneering releases of black metal, particularly for the 2nd wave and how black metal stands today, A Blaze in the Northern Sky is still a frightening release, even to this day. While Darkthrone's death metal origins are still prevalant on this record (particularly in some of the slower riffs), the blast beats, artwork, vocal style, guitar tones, and themes are very much black metal. I forgot how kickass this record sounds too. It packs a punch. This isn't one of those lofi atmospheric black metal records with a notoriously thin sound. This record is full in sound and absolutely badass. There's not a bad track on here. It's a precise 42 minute, 6 track album that does not waste a moment. I think this is essential listening for any music fan who wants to understand what is out there.

I do want to share a fun memory I have about this album. I remember the initial rise in popularity with iTunes and mp3 based music. Around that time I was around 13-14yo and I was slowly dipping my toes into extreme metal, but it was mostly some mainstream metalcore and bands like Meshuggah and Gojira. While I was exploring iTunes, I somehow ended up on black metal and eventually found the artworks for this album and Transylvanian Hunger. I remember how creeped out I felt staring at the corpse paint figures. I listened to the samples on shitty computer speakers and thought, "Who the hell would listen to this?" Little did I know I would fall down the black metal rabbit hole in college, haha.
