And this came out in September but slipped under the radar. (I mean, it's not even on the dude's Wikipedia page?). It's more polished than I'd like, but I'm enjoying the direction Ibrahim Maalouf is going in. That track with Trombone Shorty is a banger.

Rosalie Cunningham - To Shoot Another Day

I think this is my first actual release day review in a while. I'd been wanting to check out Rosalie Cunningham for a while, and what better opportunity than on the release day of her latest album. So Cunningham's latest is my first and I gotta' say I thoroughly loved this album upon first listen, even more upon the second. There's nothing overly prog on the album, but Cunningham's ingestion and regurgitation of so many genres is itself quite progressive in spirit. And what a voice! Rich and full, technically strong and captivatingly expressive, it's all I could ever want in a vocal.

I think the 1 Nov release date is a day late (at least in the US) as a number of songs on this album would go great with Halloween. At times it's like someone gene spliced Florence Welch and the steamy side of Alannah Myles and the resulting being had a love child with Alice Cooper who then decided to become a master of mixing musical modes both traditional and modern.

Truly, this album is a marvel.

I never really thought of Nightwish as progressive, but Progarchives lists them as progressive metal, so I'll go ahead and drop this here. Personally, I consider them symphonic metal and think they're only "progressive" to the extent that any symphonic metal could be considered progressive.

That said, I'm always happy when a new Nightwish album comes out, and I really do like this album. It is a classic Nightwish project. But that's really a bit of a double edged sword. As much as I like it, I'd probably like it a whole lot more if I'd heard it a quarter cenntury ago. It seems Tuomas Holopainen and his merry metallic troubadours just haven't evolved a lot over the years. Other disappointments come in the form of rather unimaginative drumming, and the exceedingly stunning voice of Floor Jansen too often getting a little lost in the mix. This is as solid a symphonic metal album as one could hope for from Nightwish, and it will undoubtedly get a few spins from me. I just wish for something a little more unique from time to time, and for the love of all that is holy in metal, let Floor Jansen really belt one once in a while!

Hey all. It's been a while...

For anyone that doesn't know. I've been living in Asheville,NC for the past 5-6 years. A hurricane just came through 2 weeks ago and completely wiped out my city. I'm ok, but many of the places I've loved are gone. People have lost everything, including many musicians based in the area (including Indigo DeSouza). Some good folks put together a massive compilation with tracks by everyone from R.E.M. to Lonnie Holley to Phish to MJ Lenderman. Proceeds go to relief efforts, which are desperately needed. I hope that if there are any other members from the area, you're also surviving alright. It's been a tough couple of weeks.

Lauren Talley's new group, Lauren, Amber & Kenna, will release their first album, "A Little Bit of Heaven" on Friday. I am disappointed that there are only 7 tracks. Six of them have already been released and are in my collection. So, I'm looking forward to that one track that I haven't heard yet. It's called "That Kind of Friend". I'm hoping it's a track that Lauren sings lead on. Kenna is a good vocalist (and great song-writer), Amber is a great vocalist, but Lauren is my favorite.
