Ocean Colour Scene - 100 Mile High City

Link

The lead single off Ocean Colour Scene's second album, Marchin' Already.

It didn't get as much love as the previous album, but I think this might actually be my favourite single of theirs.

Got a lot of legs from featuring in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, good bit of fun.

The Seahorses - Love Is The Law

Link

A very interesting one here.

The Seahorses were a shortlived band formed by former Stone Roses member John Squire.

Releasing just one album, this was the only real single that made anything of note, somewhere between the Stone Roses and Oasis stylistically, it fits that post-Britpop UK scene admirably.

Only 800 odd views on the video I'm sharing, but I actually think of have a copy of this single somewhere in storage currently.

A welcome pick.

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

Link

This one was (still is?) huge and needs no introduction.

The Verve had broken up once before this after their second album, reunited in 1997 for their third album Urban Hymns, a huge hit, and then broke up again not long afterwards.

They reunite and break up for a 3rd time years later in the late 00's.

Still holds up and I'll still enjoy listening to it, there's some interesting stuff on the royalties and a case involving the Rolling Stones, if you're looking for lite reading.

U2 -Staring At The Sun

The follow up single to Discotheque of U2's Pop album.

More a traditional alt rock/pop hit from them as opposed to the last few they've had on here.

Wet Wet Wet - If I Never See You Again

Link

The lead single off Wet Wet Wet's 5th album, 10 (confusing I know).

Somewhere between Meat Loaf and Elton John, and as good as neither if you ask me.

Can't get into it, a drastic change to the previous track though.

Foxy Brown - I'll Be (Radio Edit) (feat. Jay-Z)

Link

Rapper Foxy Brown had some mild success in the late 90's into the mid 00's, though some legal issues and a scrapped album mean it's been over 20 years since she had a single chart, though I guess that shouldn't take away from this, which is solid.

First reference to Jay-Z on here also, shows have far we have come, his debut album having come out the previous year, Reasonable Doubt.

Anyway, the second single of Brown's debut album, Ill Na Na, decent.

N-Tyce - Hey DJ! (Play That Song)

Link

I initially didn't like this but it was begrudgingly growing on me by the end of it.

A shortlived blend of pop and hip-hop from an English girl group who had just one album before ending in 1999.

Sounds like early S Club in a weird sense...

Backstreet Boys - Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)

Link

Despite showing up a year after its original release, this is the strongest Backstreet single yet, the 4th of their debut album.

Despite the issues surrounding them, they definitely took the boyband era to a different level, this was only the start.

Boyzone - Isn't It A Wonder

Link

The 3rd single off Boyzone's second album, more like it in terms of catchy 90's pop, much more my speed, even if it's not near their best.

Boyzone get treated well here in large due to nostalgia, which is particularly relevant as they're Irish.

That said I still really like their style of boyband pop.

Damage - Wonderful Tonight

Moving swiftly along to boyband Damage covering Eric Clapton, the 5th single off their debut album.

Not a song I'm a huge fan of in general, and this version doesn't help.

Better than the last one though...

Warren G - Smokin' Me Out (feat. Ron Isley)

Link

Another real leftfield pick, but appropriately following up from Coolio I guess.

Warren G is not someone I expected to find on here, but a welcome surprise.

This was the final single off his second album, having already done well off Regulate on his first, this time featuring vocals from Ron Isley, of the Isley Brothers naturally enough.

A good time.

Coolio - C U When U Get There (feat. 40 Thevz)

Link

Is it particularly good or after aging well? Probably not.

Do I love it anyway? Sure do.

That's the beauty of this whole project!

This was the lead single off Coolio's 3rd album, and was heavily used in the Martin Lawrence/Tim Robbins buddy comedy, Nothing to Lose, as per the video.

Right up my alley.

Shola Ama - You Might Need Somebody

Link

Pretty much a one hit wonder, Shola Ama was only a teenager when this came out on her debut album, Much Love in 1997, a cover of an early Randy Crawford song from 1981.

It's real easy listening radio soup-pop, in the good kind of way, very smooth for sure.

Ama hasn't hit these heights since, releasing just one album in the last 20 years, but this track alone appears to be putting her at over 600k listens a month on Spotify, so it holds up.

En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love)

Link

Not a bad effort at dance meets R&B.

A big hit for En Vogue, the lead single of EV3, their 3rd album in case that wasn't obvious.

Good, but they've had better, still shows up now and again these days and was a huge hit, and arguably their last big hit really, though they are still together by all accounts.

George Michael - Star People (Forthright Edit)

Link

Not a bad effort at dance meets R&B.

The 5th of 6 singles off his Older album, it's got a bit more going for it me compared to some of the previous efforts.

A solid enough dance track and more in the style I like from George Michael, not quite Wham! level, but a decent track.

Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close

Link

Not a bad effort at dance meets R&B.

Gaines was a member of Prince's New Power Generation and then had some minor success as a solo artist, this being her big hit.

This was the title track of her second album in 1995, but wasn't released as a single until 1997.

Boyz II Men-esque at times, not fully there but I can dig it.

Ultra Naté - Free

Link

A bizarre one, one of those ones you know but you can't place when asked what it is.

This is still on the radio, a lot, here anyway.

It's a solid discopop song but I know little about it, even if Ultra Naté, a singer from Maryland, still seems to have a big following.

This was off her 3rd album back in 1997 and has seemingly held up popularity wise over time.

Spice Girls - Who Do You Think You Are

Link

Having opened the past 3 Now albums, the Spice Girls were demoted this time around.

However it's still a really good pop hit, actually this was only the B-side to Mama but I think it's the stronger pop song anyway.

The last single coming off their debut album
