Johnnyo wrote:

The group of nine met to discuss the album with most people either loving or liking it. Three of us didn't quite get it which might be down to context as those who liked it were, in general, older and were more likely to have grown up with the album.

The political angle, with many of the topics still relevant today, was a big selling point rather than the music.

From my perspective, I'm not in love with the album but I have liked it more with each listen. Will I continue to listen to it, not regularly, but I might well revisit from time to time.

Worth listening too even if it didn't tick that many boxes

Cool! I think the music stands on its own, but the politics are certainly interesting too. They definitely were one of the more political bands, I believe, at that time.

Did u guys pick a next album? <Also, Don't forget about the Beach Boys project! Kinda cool we're still getting so many different perspectives! 😎 >

There are some really nice bluesy tracks and also some psychedelic tinges to others, sometimes both in the same track.

You have to put albums like this into context though. If this were an album released in 2025, I wouldn't buy it and would consider it rather mundane but this was at the start of a whole new genre of music, so viewing it in that context, it's a decent album.

I think that contemporaries like, the Doors (you can hear so much Doors here or is it that you can hear Country Joe in the Doors?) Love, Jefferson Airplane. All of those bands seem more mature than Country Joe.

Still exploring this album but I'm finding it an interesting listen. Enjoyed the second and third listens more than the first.

What about you? Did you get a chance to revisit?

I did! Wanted to get your take first. I personally love it. Especially that first side. Currently I think side 1 is essential Psychedelic Music. On the fence about side 2. I wouldn't put it on the same level as The Doors or Love either, but it's just the next rung down. It would be one of my favorite releases if it was released this year for sure. BUT, I've had this in my collection now for decades. lol. So I'm quite biased. Would easily make my TOP FIVE psychedelic albums of 1967 <which would be a fun list to compile! Might just have to do that. 😎 >

edit: Just looked at RYM's Top Psychedelic albums of 1967, and, my apologies, that year is STACKED! I'm very curious now where I would place our heroes, Country Joe and Fish!

Thanks for feeding back repo. I think that repeat listens will move this album up my rankings. I can definitely see why people will consider it a classic especially for 1967. Going to listen a few more times before my group meets.

Thought that I’d feedback what is discussed and then start a new topic around the next 60’s album that we decide on.

Sounds good! What albums have u discussed with your group in the past?

I’ve only just joined that group so this is my first album. Will need to see if it’s a worthwhile thing to pursue but from my contact with the group so far, through Padlet, they seem like a decent and knowledgeable bunch so looking forward to my first meet up.

Thanks for all your feedback. Would have been nice if others had engaged but enjoy our chat.

Look out for the next 60’s album. Let’s keep this going, if you are interested in doing that.

Thanks for responding Repo and for the link to the Beach Boys page. Hasn't spotted that thread and will definitely take part.

Anything to get more discussion going around all aspects of music has to be a good thing. My gut feeling, and it might just be nostalgia kicking in, is that there was more discussion when I first joined (14 years ago, crikey).

Would we interested in your thoughts on the album once you have revisited it

I'll obviously go to the session with my own views but what other people think is always interesting and I'm also trying to get more conversations going about music on the site and this felt like an opportunity not to be missed

Hey Johnnyo! Love the effort! I'll certainly join in! One of my faves from that year, BUT will have to re-listen first before really having anything to say.
