Even though I was rooting for the Spurs, it wasn’t by much, and I do think it’s great for the NBA (and ultimately maybe even for Wembys development) that the Knicks won and in the way they did it.

But I wanted the Spurs more because I really like how they’ve constructed their team (much more reminiscent of the previous 2000-2010 era or 90s with an added dosage of the 3 ball) and just get excited about the greats of the NBA and who’s next — and Wemby certainly appears to be next if he can just improve on some of his flaws and maintain health.

Seeing the Knicks win wasn’t much of a “loss”. Really liked their team and how they truly came together for the playoffs. Love how they played in the finals, how clutch they were, their heart, and Brunson has some Kobe and Iverson in him which is always welcome in today’s NBA. That final 45 pt game was one for the ages.

The Spurs aren't there yet mentally. They are close, and because they are so young, we should be seeing them in the final again and again.

For those who compare Wemby/Shai to Magic/Bird - it's way harder to keep dynasties together now. One can hope that the Spurs and Thunders will be slugging it out for the west for years...

Good for the Knicks. I don't see them doing this again - Spurs are only getting better, and Thunder will get healthy. Also, the east will get tougher as the Pacers get healthy, and the Cavs, Pistons and Celtics will be back. The Raptors and Hawks should be improving as well, and I'm not even factoring where Giannis ends up.

I'm happy for Brunson and the Nova Knicks. I'm happy for Anunoby. Covid was tough on Towns - he deserves this. It's also been 50+ years for NY.

Which franchise is the next one to be overdue? Kings? Hawks? Clippers?

Nah. That's it for this year. I don't see how the Spurs can mentally rebound from that one. VERY interesting series though!!!

The spurs will be back obvs. They are soooo fricken young. Glad the Knicks r gonna take it this year! Just an epic comeback too!

OG Anunoby in lead for Finals MVP

Tempting to say Brunson with his clutch shot making throughout and near 30 PPG, while being heart and soul and leader of the team — and I think he has a case for all these reasons — but he is also shooting just under 40% for the series so far and probably will need to clean that up to like .425-plus to have a shot over Anunoby (plus OGs defense has been valuable, something you can’t say for Brunson, and OG also has what will likely become among the most iconic shots in Finals history with his last second tip in, especially if assuming the Knicks go on to win the championship).

Wemby probably next in line right now despite being down 3-1 … if the Spurs can somehow recover…

I still think the Spurs can pull this off, if they can manage to get over that collapse — 2 of 3 at home and they have to remain confident in themselves that they were dominating that game before going stupid, and have had pretty much just as legit a claim to all 4 games as the Knicks have. So if they can psych themselves back into it, with Wemby leading the way, and not play such dumb basketball, they can still do it.

Obviously odds are against it and the Knicks should take this in 6, maybe even 5 if this Spurs loss is just too deflating and they lay an egg at home.

Fascinating series so far! More please! Let’s go 7!

God that was pretty incredible (the shot making) but also some of the stupidest “modern” basketball I’ve seen this year… FFS Spurs, just attack the damn basket the last 18 mins — not only do you have a 9 foot tall Alien, you will make more shots than can be caught up to after already being up 20-30 pts, PLUS will probably draw the Knicks into too much foul trouble to be able to mount the physical defense (for fear of fouling out) that they applied as it got closer

But also the refs just blatantly blew it, presumably got swept up into the excitement of the Garden and didn’t want to be that ref that calls the Knicks for foul (like for example the obvious blown call on Fox’s climactic fast break that would’ve swung and probably won the game back for the Spurs).

They of course gave the Spurs a (probably, arguably) more favorable whistle earlier on, but in these very very important plays near the end of the game that cost a team the game one way or the other… they suddenly ignore the rules and the inconsistency is ridiculous…

An epic come back by the Knicks regardless that showed a lot of heart and “never say die” character, and Brunson and Onunoby were just awesome, as well as Alvarado and then KAT at the end, but God damn that was both historically awesome and annoying too at the same time…

Miscellaneous thoughts…

Maybe I’m delusional but these games have been so close the Spurs may still pull this off, similar to Giannis (in this case would be Wemby) going nuclear in the Finals against the Phx Suns and reeling off 4 straight after going down 0-2? Do I think the odds are against it? Of course. But when you have a player as transcendent and impactful as Wemby, who hasn’t had a great finals so far (yet Spurs are still plus with him on the floor), it can still happen even if a long shot at this point.

That said, the Knicks are on a roll, are so clutch and a championship appears more and more inevitable. Beating them 4 over the next 5????

As awesome as Wemby is, he still spends too many plays on the perimeter or mid range shots when he should be utterly unstoppable and relentless on lobs and closer to the basket, and spend a higher percentage of plays on those. I don’t understand why he settled for that last shot last night when he is 9 feet tall. With one last chance, you should be taking your highest percentage shot where you have your greatest advantage.

He needs to figure out a way to not get out positioned or moved away from the basket by stronger bigs. This happens a little too much and he should not consistently have games where he is getting anything less than, say, 12-13 rebounds especially while playing 40 mins. 8, 9 rebounds is pretty unacceptable for his height and wingspan advantage.

He also needs to work some more on his conditioning this off-season — which I know he does — but there is still work to do as he seems to start wearing down once he surpasses 30, 35 mins and this is surely a factor in him settling for more perimeter or mid range plays later in the game and lacking more energy it takes to gather more rebounds.

These issues give me some hesitation in decisively anointing him as the very best player in the NBA (yet). It’s really really close between him and Jokic…

KAT is having a helluva run and really making things tough for Wemby. He is on track for Finals MVP so far…

Even though I’m pulling for Wemby and the Spurs to somehow find a way, the Knicks are great to watch and very deserving of the title

Would LOVE to the Knicks pull this off. Would be so good for the NBA. Very interesting matchup. With Castle, Harper, and Wemby still developing they have to potential to be scary good for years to come so hoping they get knocked off this year.

Spurs look scary good... nobody else has a Wemby.

...but the Knicks wings can do more for Brunson when he gets swarmed than OKC could for Shai once Jalen Williams got hurt. Also, Towns won't disappear like Chet did. If the Knicks bench can even approach the Spurs, they might have a chance.

Can’t fault this pick actually. They look very evenly matched, I’m just counting on Wemby to be transcendent and put a cap on what seems to be his first legacy defining playoffs of more to come.

In some ways the match up reminds of GSW vs Cavs in 2016, where despite the win loss differential, the teams were very evenly matched. LeBrons Cavs would coast a bit in the regular season during those years whereas GSW went all out to break the wins record, thus making them appear (before playoffs) like they were a juggernaut relative to the Cavs when in reality they were very closely matched. As are the Spurs and Knicks to me.

There should be a coach’s challenge.

If the coach is proven wrong upon challenging and official review, they lose time out.

But if correct (proven flop), they lose nothing, the flopping team gets assessed a technical foul, the challenging team gets a free throw plus possession.

On top of that there should be post game reviews and fines for clear flopping and it should be reported how many times a team flopped, how many for offending players and how much fined.

Shame that shit out of existence

Bill Russell’s defense, long regarded as the greatest ever, is the closest comp to Wemby’s, as this video helps illustrate.

The biggest difference in terms of value game to game may be that Russell usually played nearly the whole game, like 12-15 more minutes than Wemby on avg.

Offensively he was unbelievably fast (a track star before NBA), of course playing and driving closer to the hoop solely more than he would today, lots of fast breaks, stylistically probably closer to Giannis and maybe a Bam Abedayo, hybrid of the two, without any 3 pt shooting. Remember there was no 3 pt shot yet, so it was typically and entirely the offenses goal to get most of a teams shots close to the hoop or from mid range inward. Also, remember, handling the ball was way stricter then, where a player had to keep his hand over the ball, and one couldn’t take more than minimal steps once one gathered, so you’re not going to ever see him doing Giannis Euro steps, or putting his hand under the ball as he leverages more momentum forward — whether he was capable of it or not, it was against the rules and wouldn’t be part of his arsenal — the dribbling has to remain disciplined and controlled even during fast breaks.

Wemby: if he becomes the next Bill Russell of defense, like he appears to be approaching (skill and tactics wise he may already be there, and per minute impact maybe also, but can he be as relentless for 40 or more mins night in night out?). He should also improve his rebounding, through perhaps increasing his strength and working on positioning as he is a bit too easily taken out of this part of his game by bigger/stronger players (I do agree with Juno that some dirty-ish tactics are being employed against him and this needs to be pushed back upon, at least somewhat, by the NBA).

And if he can approach a Kevin Durant offensively, which basically just means improving his efficiency mid range and outside, I’m not really sure how he could be dealt with — health permitting — from total domination, multiple MVPs, championships… assuming he also sticks to his intangibles, competitive fire…
