' Pet Sounds is WONDERFUL! #1 on my chart and in my heart!

Brian Wilson just recently finished two George Gershwin songs. To be asked to finish Gershwin, as a musician, is rather like being asked to finish a painting by Leonardo.

I'm a history teacher, and George Gershin is in the textbooks as the the very first to write "uniquely American music." He was the very first pop music artist.

In a statement, Todd Gershwin of the George Gershwin estate and Michael Owen of the Ira Gershwin [George's older brother who wrote the compositions' lyrics] estate had this to say:

"The Gershwin families are delighted that the legendary musician Brian Wilson has chosen to record a collection of George and Ira Gershwin songs for his next project. In every generation, American music has been pushed forward by visionaries, from the Gershwin brothers to Brian Wilson. This latest interpretation will be a new opportunity to discover the magic of Gershwin music."

Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys are incredible and Pet Sounds is their best. McCartney, Clapton, Dylan...they all list Pet Sounds as their favorite.

Bob Dylan said it best: "That ear – I mean, Jesus, he's got to will that to the Smithsonian."

Im obviously not trying to say they are the only 2 albums to influence anyone (and all the ones you mentioned would be some of the most influential with them)but yes I was aying that i think they have the furthest reaching and broadest influence of any albums. Although now that you mention it..I would probably put King Of The Delta Blues Singers up with them. Is an impossible thing to prove though.
Well what else Mr Smarty Pants?

N.W.A.- Straight Outta Compton (rap)
Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath (metal)
Kraftwerk-Trans Europe Express (electronica)
Robert Johnson-King of the Delta Blues Singers (rock)
The Stooges-Raw Power (punk)
Herbie Hancock-Headhunters (fusion)
Massive Attack-Blue Lines (trip-hop, electronica)
...

I mean, there's no one or two albums that have far-reaching effects across several genres, so to say that VU&Nico and Pet Sounds are THE two most influential albums is retarded. You're neglecting Metal, Punk, Jazz, Electronica, and many other genres where prominent artists don't give a fuck about either. You think Eazy-E had the Beach Boys in mind when he was rapping?

I think objectively (as possible) they are probably the 2 most influential albums of the last 50 years.

it's not a surprise since Pet Sounds used to be higher than VU&Nico

As far as American rivals to the Beatles, I think I much prefer the psych'ed out mess that is VU to the pop-friendly chart-pleasers. Not to say that "Wouldn't It Be Nice" isn't one of the cutest songs ever written, just that, you know, I'd be sad if BEA actually decided Pet Sounds were better.

Maybe it has something to do with The smile sessions coming out and more people listening to that then going onto pet sounds.

HOpefully PS continues to rise.

Pet Sounds has risen above the VU&N. Is this a new trend, or just a temporary thing? Is it because PS is rising, or is VU&N falling?

Personally, I hope it's PS rising, but my guess is that it's just a temporary thing.
