What's the word on the new Supergirl movie coming out?! My kids & I really dug Superman last Summer, and we love the choice of Milly Alcock and the trailer persona of this Supergirl. I'm hoping it's both good and, if good, a hit because I'd love to see this James Gunn iteration of DC Universe be something special that comic book geeks like me can get behind.

Tis that razzledazzle Cote d'Azur time of year again when all the fancy people flying into Nice take an Uber helicopter over to Cannes— really great looking semi-lowkey lineup, and a super interesting jury— very glad to see Park Chan-wook getting some dues with helming duty— feels like it has the makings of a classic year, and I hope some triumphs come out of it—

Course, I have no idea what will happen. There will be surprises. There will be duds. But I'm predicting something along these lines happening:

Palme D'or: Fatherland (Pawlikowski)
Grand Prix: The Beloved (Sorogoyen)
Jury Prize: All of a Sudden (Hamaguchi)
Director: Lukas Dhont & Zvyagintsev
Actor: Sebastian Stan (Fjord)
Actress: Bárbara Lennie (Bitter Christmas) or ScarJo (Paper Tiger)
Screenplay: Gentle Monster (Kreutzer)

Or some mixture of that anyway—
The acting leads from The Beloved could walk away with the acting prizes instead—
Kore-eda should be up there somewhere too, but don't know where—
Regardless, Spain's winning something, and Japan's winning something—

There's actually a chance Sinners is my least favourite of the lot—
(Haven't watched F1, mind)

I'm still a little mixed on Hamnet too for some reason... I'm having a hard time faulting it, but I'm also having a hard time particularly caring for it. On a technical level, it was quite good, but something just didn't spark—

Also, after watching Marty Supreme, I'm a little surprised Odessa A'zion wasn't nominated. Supporting Actress isn't usually the hardest category to land, and she did a great job with the role—

Yeah, I dunno. I personally prefer OBAA to Sinners (you can only have its immaculate precision after thirty years of making continual classics, though I’m pretty sure Coogler will get to that point eventually), but I’d still be happy if Sinners won, especially for what it might do to counteract all the studio fascism rapidly accelerating over the past few months.

I won’t be watching the ceremony, though, because I’ll be at a new Chicago social club called The Mouse screening a surprise Wiseman film for those three hours <3

I have a feeling the Oscars next week are going to be a little bonkers. It's been a weird race this year, and I could see some curveballs thrown—

Anyone else have opinions on the following 'upsets'?

Best Picture: Sinners
Best Actor: Michael B Jordan
Best Actress: Rose Byrne
Best Supporting Actor: Sean Penn
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Madigan
Best International Feature: The Secret Agent
Best Animated Feature: Zootopia 2
Best Score: One Battle After Another

?

I know some sound a little unlikely, but I can legit see at least three of these happening—
I think this year is a bit more up in the air than usual (I think PTA is a 100% lock for Director, but most of the other big categories? I mean... yeah, can rule some nominees out, but I think many are still a 2-3 way race— by all means, I think Elordi should also be considered a major contender)—

it'll be interesting— even though I wouldn't call it the hottest awards year, I look forward to it a little more when it's not all set in stone—

Also, finally got around to watching Marty Supreme last night. It'll most likely be my film of the year. Great project from everyone involved—

I've now watched a few of the films from the selection.

I really loved Sinners, and the second half is great too. I'm thinking it might become my new number one. I'll be doing a second viewing soon. 😄

I also saw Marty Supreme, The Ugly Stepsister and It Was Just an Accident. They're quite good, but none of the three made my top 10, though they're still in my top 50. �'�

Should note that as much as I enjoyed One Battle After Another, it probably doesn't quite crack top 5 PTA for me—
(There Will Be Blood, The Master, Phantom Thread, Boogie Nights, Magnolia and maybe even Licorice Pizza would land higher on my board)
It's an 8/10 for me, and I don't think it'll ever be higher or lower than that—
I think it's a good, fun, entertaining film, released at the right time in a weak-ish year to maintain momentum in giving Paul his award dues—

Sinners threw me a smidge— I think BEA knows I'm not like... super into sci-fi/fantasy, so I was trying my best to be open-minded at the halfway mark, but yeah... it's just like, (don't yell at me), giving a cheap-icky feeling? Like audiences were cheated out of a mature, well-balanced ending to a fantastic lead-up. Production's solid and all that, and the acting's strong across the board, but I just can't find myself doing anything but losing interest in that second half—

That scene where the kid sings in the car though? Awesome—
& I Lied To You is my choice for the Oscar, followed by Cave's less-likely Train Dreams—

I hope I'm not misunderstood here— I think it's a very good film, and it'll remain high on my list for the year—

Main gripe, if any, is I feel like the middle dips a smidge— albeit, I've only watched it once— and slaps the audience the same way a few too many times over— but it's still a strong film, and I was genuinely surprised it wasn't nominated for Best Picture—

Great ending too, one of the most memorable slow-endings I've seen in any film ever—
(& I'm very glad Panahi was awarded the Palme for it— made sense—)

Y'all are sleeping on the Naked Gun reboot.

I'm also appallingly low on 2025 movies, but I'm hoping that now that the Oscar nominees are out, my local theaters will start putting forth a greater effort to get some of the movies.
My current watchlist (and ratings) stand at....

Avatar: Fire and Ash (C+, slight improvement from the last one)
Elio (C+)
F1 (B-)
Frankenstein (B+, good movie but what a bad screenplay)
Freakier Friday (B+, possibly just a nostalgia boost but hey)
Hamnet (A)
It Was Just an Accident (A+, best movie of the year and it's not even close)
KPop Demon Hunters (C)
The Naked Gun (A+, possibly just another nostalgia boost but hey)
The Phoenician Scheme (B, plus brownie points for accurate hieroglyphs)

Superman (F, someone please please explain what the appeal was supposed be, I am at an utter loss)

The International Feature category is a tough one this year, and they didn't even have a slot for No Other Choice. I still have many things to see too. I found 2024 to be a top-heavy year, with 3 of my favorites of the decade so far. But my 2024 list falls off quickly after my top 3. So far, my 2025 diary lacks anything close to my top 3 of last year, however overall 2025 may have more good movies to offer.

So many films I've watched didn't work for me this year... works that I was highly anticipating like The Mastermind, Anemone, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, The Smashing Machine, Alhpa, Eddington, just didn't hit me— and the secondhalf of Sinners lost me completely, but I thought the first half was the making of a great film—

Being said, always trying to stay positive— I still have some great looking titles ahead of me: Resurrection, Sound of Falling, The Stranger, Cover-Up, Renoir, Hamnet, The Golden Spurtle, Orphan, I Swear, Sorry Baby, Poeta, Weapons, The Roses, Materialists, Urchin, Steve, The Voice of Hind Rajab— and whatever else may show up along the way, course—

I'm sitting on 7/10 for BP— yet to see the previously-mentioned heavyweights Hamnet and Marty Supreme, as well as the confused-to-see-it-there F1—

I'm predicting the following for the bigger categories—

Picture: One Battle After Another

Actor: Chalamet (ytw)
Actress: Byrne (in an upset)
S Actor: Skarsgard (but I'd select Elordi pretty easy)
