Stretch 'n' Vern, were, and apparently still, are an electronic duo from London.

This was one of just 2 singles they had out in the mid 90's, the sampling of Boogie Wonderland does a lot of heavy lifting here, always threatening to take off in the background but always just falling short in the end.

It's a surprisingly fun time, no idea what they're really saying, but it definitely has something going for it.

Legend is the best selling reggae album of all time, and it’s not even close. It ranks second only to Dark Side Of The Moon in time spent on both the US and UK charts. It covers The Wailers career from 1973, with Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, to the 1983 posthumous album Confrontation (Marley died in 1981). Every song here is a bona fide classic, and the album plays like a perfect hour of reggae radio. You’ll want every one of these songs, making Legend one of the greatest compilation albums ever made. If you ever were a stoner in white America, this album was most likely your soundtrack. It’s all about good vibes, filled with songs about love and peace and all that crap. As a playlist, it’s perfection. As a definitive look at the career of Bob Marley, it most definitely is not. But, to most, that really has never mattered much.

Legend was put together specifically to appeal to white listeners. What this means is that Marley’s political side is completely omitted. Marley sang all of the nice little sweet pop reggae tunes…but he was also pissed off, and sang about racism and slavery and politics and oppression. Legend ignores all of that. Legend paints a picture of Marley that is wholesome, friendly, cool, and suggests that he was a Jamaican version of Jimmy Buffett. He was not. So, while your inner college stoner will thrill at the perfection of these songs, remember that reggae was a lot more meaningful than just getting high and having a good time. Go back and check his original albums like Exodus and Uprising, Natty Dread and Live. Legend is undeniably great, but just remember that there was so much more of what this band was about.

Here is an example of how the stars might speak to you—or, more accurately, mock you. After posting the comment above, I set out—as usual—to track down that "voice from the heavens" in the form of new music releases. On one of the channels, the very first post I encountered was the brand-new music video for a song titled "Private Lives" by a band I hadn't heard of before: Death From Above 1979.
For me, that figure—1979—was like a red rag to a bull. I immediately set out to find a translation and an explanation.

The name of the Canadian dance-punk duo Death From Above 1979 conceals a story involving a legal dispute, military slogans, and the birth year of one of the members.
Initially, the band was simply called Death From Above. Musicians Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler adopted the phrase from pop culture; "Death From Above" is the official motto of the US 82nd Airborne Division and frequently appears in films (for instance, on a helicopter in *Apocalypse Now*).
However, shortly after the band's formation, issues arose that led to a name change:
• Conflict with James Murphy: Immediately following the release of their successful debut EP in 2004, the New York indie label DFA Records—co-founded by James Murphy (frontman of LCD Soundsystem)—sued the band. Murphy’s label originally stood for "Death From Above Records," and they demanded the Canadians change their name to avoid confusion.
• The addition of "1979": To avoid a complete name change and protect themselves from lawsuits, the duo simply appended "1979" to the end. This is the birth year of the band's drummer and vocalist, Sebastien Grainger.
Fun fact: In 2017, the band officially dropped the numbers, deeming them "too long and silly," and performed as Death From Above for a time. However, to the delight of longtime fans, the musicians later returned to their full, iconic name including the numerical suffix.

If you are from the UK, and you are of a certain age, this is a very important day in music.

In 1967 (I was nine at the time so perfect for me), the UK's first National pop radio station, BBC Radio 1 was launched to take over from the very successful pirate radio stations, which had been forced off-air. Former pirate DJ Tony Blackburn, from Radio Caroline, was the first presenter on air, with The Move's Flowers In The Rain the first record played.

Thanks, will check into those. The 'Your Rating' sort issue will be prioritised and fixed (EDIT: now done). Several changes have been made to dark mode recently, and the artwork issue stems from one of those (just rolled back). Ideally, prefer to release changes as part of a bigger update rather than making them on the fly (which I've been guilty of doing recently).

A top-rated chart composition feature is on the radar and should be implemented in the next few updates (hopefully before the end of year as it's something on the 2026 roadmap).

Rehearsals for 'Dog Man Star' were very tense and would split the band into two separate camps. Bernard Butler had his own agenda (an example of which was a 25 minute version of "Asphalt World" which included an 8 minute guitar solo) and frequently clashed with the rest of the band and producer Ed Buller eventually leaving the sessions with the album far from completion . That the album was not only completed but is so darn good is mind blowing

Personally I prefer the cock sure swagger of their debut but 'D.M.S' is close behind with its glam rock , Bowie influenced grandness . It's not quite a masterpiece due to the weaker tracks "Daddy's Speeding" and "Black or Blue" but it sits comfortably as one of the 1990's best albums

The animosity towards Arenado runs deep, haha. I would like to thank the Phillies for eliminating the Diamondbacks simply because the Phillies are my team! They made it tough on themselves and the fans by losing four straight, but they finally clinched on the last day. Disaster avoided.

Now how about the playoffs? Prediction time:

Phillies at Braves - I know my team very well. I know we're capable of winning this series. We have the best rotation in all of MLB with 3 top 10 starters. With Wheeler, Sanchez, and Luzardo, we can take on anybody. Outside of Chris Sale, the Braves don't have another ace starting pitcher. However, Philly's hitting and the bullpen are unreliable. Sometimes we'll average 6+ runs/game for a stretch, other times we'll average 1-2. And boy was it frustrating how many times one of our aces left the game with a lead, only for the pen to cough it up. It doesn't give me confidence for a deep playoff run. It also hurts not having Arraez in the roster this series. Still, if we get hot today through Thursday and knock our division nemesis out of the playoffs for the 3rd time in 5 years, I'll take it! Speaking of the Braves, they are better on paper. Stronger bullpen, more consistent lineup. They've had more time to prep for this series, and they have home field advantage. My heart is with the Fightin' Phils, but my brain says the Braves will win this series.

Cubs at Padres - I'm going with Padres here. Stronger pitching. An offense that came alive in the last month, propelling them to a hot finish. Meanwhile, the Cubs had a mediocre September. If it's a clash of momentum and home/away splits, San Diego has the clear advantage. Of course, the Cubs are perfectly capable of winning this series. PCA, Bregman, Suzuki...they have the best offense in MLB. I would not be surprised if they made a deep run. Again, though, the recent eye test favors San Diego.

Red Sox at Yankees - It's unfortunate that the best rivalry in the AL will be hampered by injuries to the lineup. No Aaron Judge at all. Yoshida, Stanton, Contreras are on the rosters but all question marks as to how much they can contribute. So I guess this comes down to pitching? That's still a close call. Yankees have better starters with Schlittler, Fried, and Cole. But the Sox rotation is no slouch (Gray and Tolle), and they have Chapman as their closer. So if they have a lead late in the game, Chapman will likely shut the door. This is a tough call. I'm leaning towards the Red Sox. I think Judge is the biggest injury absence this series, plus the Sox were actually better on the road this year than at Fenway. Yeah, I'll predict Boston (Personally, I don't like either team, and I hope whoever wins gets whooped by the Rays.).

White Sox at Astros - Gosh I wish that was a typo, but no it's not. A .500 team is hosting a playoff series. We mentioned the D-backs above. Decent team, but the 7th best team in a 6-team NL playoff field. However their 86-76 record is better than not 1, not 2, but 3 AL playoff teams. Furthermore, thanks to the format of 3 vs 6, winner plays 2 seed, between the White Sox, Astros, and Guardians, one of them will reach as far as the ALCS. Ugh. The AL Central and West were so bad this year. It should prompt MLB to re-think the playoff structure because it isn't fair that one of those teams will one of four left standing, while the D-backs have already packed up for vacation. Oh right, I'm supposed to make a prediction instead of ranting. Um, White Sox

Wish You Were Here (1975) by Pink Floyd

I had originally wanted to get this rated and posted much sooner than I have, but I knew after my first listen that this was an album that isn't to be listened to a couple of times and flippantly discussed. This album asks you to sit down with it and live with it and marinate in its soundscapes for a while. While I can't say it instantly became a favorite album for me, I can clearly see why it is so well regarded and why it holds such a revered place for so many. I just don't fully appreciate it yet, but I still love it. I really enjoyed how in the expanses of instrumentals between lyrical passages that they seemed to intentionally let different instruments come to the fore and be the dominant voice, keeping the arrangement underneath generally sparce rather than flattening you with a wall of rock. I was surprised at how quickly a couple of the songs grew on me and I have a feeling I'll grow to like this album even more the more I listen.

Miloslav Kabeláč - Symphony #3 for Brass, Organ, and Timpani

Rating: 4.5 Stars

Y'know, I'm not sure I can yet say with absolute certainty that there is undeniable objective proof justifying a 4.5/5 for this work. If anything, I could more easily point to elements that could just as easily argue the contrary. But it definitely struck me as such, so I'm happy to score it thusly.

There are no strings here. "You can't write a whole symphony without any strings!", you say? Kabeláč says "Hold my pilsner."!

At the tactical level, his juxtaposition of borderline sinister organ and heroic brass is unusual, and he uses it to great effect. At the strategic level, his subtle shifting of the roles of each, and especially the power dynamic between them makes their employment rather brilliant.

But the most amazing thing about this symphony at the macro level is the sustained intensity. Any time a piece is one thing throught, that one thing invariably loses its effect, right? We all know that 20+ minutes of unrelenting virtuosity is problematic... if all the notes are fast, then none of the notes are fast. If every measure of a piece is over the top climax, there is no climax. And so on.

Again, Kabeláč says "Czech this out!"

For over 20 minutes, the intensity (again packaged without the benefit of a full orchestra) never relents. But somehow, Kabeláč achieves enough contrast to keep the intensity from ever losing its potency from the opening fanfare right up through the final horn call. Astonishing.

Okay, now that I think about it, I'm going to retract my opening statement and say unequivocally that this piece earns every bit of those four and a half stars.

Either that or I'm just being a Caechophile fan of again.... nah, I'm sticking with the rave without excuse.

Two albums of 1984 I listened to:

First an album I already own/know:

Learning To Crawl (1984) by Pretenders
The 3rd album by Pretenders and released after a number of new people joined the band because of drug related deaths. And it's clear the Chrissie Hynde has found a new breath here. The songs sound very inspired especially at the start of the album. The Middle Of The Road is to me one of their best tracks and also Back On The Chain Gang, Time The Avenger and Show Me belong to the best they ever did. Even the two slows, Thin Line Between Love And Hate and 2000 Miles I used to consider as rather cheesy are not that bad at all in hindsight. All in all a very good album which goes from the 34th to the 9th rank of the year 1984.

And an album from my wishlist:

The Big Express (1984) by XTC
A fairly good album but this good English band with Wake Up, All The Pretty Girls and This World Over as the best tracks. Not their best but overall fairly good and it enters my year chart at the 36th rank.

Diary (1994) by Sunny Day Real Estate

Sub Pop is now known as one of the premier indie labels, but when they released Sunny Day Real Estate’s debut in 1994, they were essentially synonymous with Seattle’s grunge explosion, having been the label that released Nirvana’s debut album and Soundgarden’s first two EPs (among others).

So then we get “Diary,” an album that you could argue is one of the godfather albums of midwest emo, though I’d argue the album is more interesting than the label attached to it, especially since the genre of emo has evolved significantly in large part because it was co-opted years later by a lot of pop punk bands who took inspiration from bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and American Football and added a pop bent.

But “Diary” isn’t the polished theatrically heartbroken emo of the 2000s, it’s an album that feels much more mysterious and volatile. The guitars surge and recede, the rhythm section constantly feels like it’s ready to break, and Jeremy Enigk sings like he’s trying to communicate something he can’t really put into words.

Enigk’s vocals really are something special here, he has this ability to move from a restrained, almost fragile delivery into a soaring, anguished wail without losing the melody underneath. Also shoutout to the rhythm section too, William Goldsmith’s drumming is phenomenal on this album (especially on “Seven”)—he’s constantly pushing against the guitars creating movement within the songs that might otherwise sound straightforward. And Nate Mendel’s bass provides a great foundation that gives the guitar work something to build on. Unsurprising that both would end up in the Foo Fighters.

“Diary” is more than just an important emo album, it’s an exceptional rock album that happened to become one of the genre’s foundational pieces. Its influence is huge, but the beauty in this album comes from something a lot simpler—these songs still sound like they mean something.

"There are 5 great songs at the start and then the album slowly drifts off all the way to the end. If the consistency of those first tracks could be maintained then this would be a fantastic album but those last 4 songs just lack the intensity and punch of the opening tracks. When the album is good though it is so enjoyable to listen to and it has such a unique atmosphere and vibe to it. That is primarily due to the lead vocal which is so special and different which gives this album an edge that other records lack. The instrumentation is very good as well and it combines to create this tense and suspenseful environment for us to be in which is such a great experience. Overall, this album is a very enjoyable listen but it couldn't stay consistent throughout the whole way through and slow drag that is the conclusion really brings it down for me."
