Just completed the listening session. Mixed response to this album, which I was expecting TBH. Quite a lot of love but quite a bit of so, so comments. A little marmite!

Overall., I think more people were positive about it than not

A final thought on the album as a whole

Stand Up, was the first Jethro Tull album to feature guitarist Martin Barre, and it shows. The band moved away from the blues rock of the first album, This Was, and into the more recognisable folk rock that we associate with the band. This is where they solidified their trademark sound. Having said that, the album still retains some blues rock influences on tracks such as "A New Day Yesterday" and "Nothing Is Easy".

I like both incarnations of Tull but I’m more of a blues guy TBH. There are blues influences here but not a pronounced as on their debut album

It’s not a great album but it is a well put together one. The production and musicianship are top draw here and is a well-crafted album. There is a cohesion to the album, pointing the band in the direction of prog before prog existed.

A rather good track to conclude Stand Up. Sort of encapsulates the album which is great for a final track. Really like it. A little messed up and also a little all over the place. I like that

More folky and mellow than some of the other tracks on this album but I don’t mind that, it’s a rather decent track. Nice acoustic guitar playing and Andersons voice and flute are spot on.

The track fits into the overall approach of Stand Up very well. I like it
I really like this track. One of the best rockier tracks on the album with a Great, slow build up, to those souring flute and guitar solos. It’s pretty majestic.
Great opening with an eastern influence combined with Tull’s folk leanings. Love the percussion and mandolin / flute etc. and the flow of the track.
A bit of a gem to be honest
I really like this track. More rocky, less folky, in fact, it’s more blues rock than anything else with great musicianship including heavy guitars and of course, great flute solos.

On the attached youtube, I went one, for a live version of the track to mix things up a bit and two, because it’s a great live version of the song

Again, as you might expect, it’s got a slight folk prog / folk roots feel. Despite this, (not my favourite genre) I enjoyed the track. Lovely acoustic start to the track. Also, some nice electric guitar interludes by, I’m assuming, Martin Barre. Excellent vocals as well.

Very nice track and on the surface a far simpler track than others on the album. I rather enjoyed this

Rather too folky for me however, I like "the dynamic tempo shifts, blending bluesy folk rock with heavier electric guitar riffs by Martin", as I saw it described which is pretty accurate.

Overall, a decent track but not outstanding

Exceptional musicianship on this jazz / rock / prog track and it must be one of the most famous instrumental tracks by Jethro Tull. I love the classical / prog crossover. Not the only time that prog bands did this, ELP’s Fanfare for the Common Man, is another obvious example.

This feels to me the start of the iconic flute driven Tull sound. You also can’t ignore the bass solo from Glenn Cornick. One of the great classic rock bass sections ever
I really like it especially once it moves into rockier realms. It’s great.

More folk rock than heavy or progressive rock with Ian moving to the front on this one.

I’m not a great fan of folk rock to be honest but this is OK. Great musicianship.
A New Day Yesterday

Nice Creamesque intro which is really great. This track would not have been out of place on Disraeli Gears with its heavy blues feel.

Martin Barre was such a great blues rock guitarist but failed to get the recognition that I think he deserved although amongst guitarists themselves, he is highly regarded.
Great way to start the album.
