My Rank in Year as of this listen: 4th

Former Genesis guitaris put together an all star prog cast for this live 1998 show. The "supergroup" thing frequently disappoints, as do shows that have a set list from multiple artists rather than concentrating only on the work of the headliner.

But this show does not disappoint in any way. Everything, regardless of origin, is exceptionally well delivered. Of special note is Hackett's bringing John Wetton. The prog journeyman delivers both exceptional bass work and top notch vocals; he's especially good at singing the Genesis material. Conversely, and I mean no disrespect to Robert Fripp, Hackett nails King Crimson material. That said, Hackett remains at his very best on the Genesis and his solo songs.

Overall, nothing weak here, just varying levels of greatness.

I think @asimpkins and I were both referring to a hypothetical future scenario there, in which it becomes increasingly difficult (and perhaps even impossible) to determine if a piece of music is AI-generated just by listening to it or running it through audio-analysis software. In that case people will increasingly have to rely on crowdsourced investigations for this, conducted by individuals known to be human. (We don't know that in my case obviously, but that's only because I'm not trying.) Maybe that day will never come, but saying "that day will never come" doesn't seem to have slowed the bad guys down very much so far.

I was in the mood for some classic archtop vibe, and the great Jim Hall delivered in spades. This 1957 release may be his first, and it may have the most generic sounding title ever, but Hall is already showing that combination of impeccably clean technique, lovely warm tone, and thoroughly expressive delivery that would make him a standout for decades in a world of great jazz guitarists. Anyone who thinks flawless technique interferes with genuinely human expression need only give this album a spin to dispel that false dilemma.

These four (+1 I added) comprise one of the listening groups from David Hurwitz's Beethoven or Bust. I found it to be a rewarding series, although mor for the individual pieces than for the sort of academic compare and contrast study Hurwitz proposes.

Iberia, Bolero, Carmen, Leyenda.... all gret, and of course Concierto de Aranjuez is thoroughly glorious; but I don't think anything quite evokes images of España quite like this. What fun this is to listen to! While I don't care to watch ballet, I do think I'd like to see a production of this; as I understand it, the dance incorporates Spanish style rather than being straight ballet.

This piece is as lush and irrepressibly beautiful as the previous one is Spanish. You'd be hard pressed to find another piece of music that so perfectly brings together gorgeous melody and sumptuous orchestral color. I also love how all movements are blended into one continuous piece; the transitions are gradual rather than the traditional clean breaks, and in conjunction with this lush melodies, it works to create a powerfully unique and special listening experience.

Stravinsky was the one to get me over my aversion to ballet music via The Right of Spring and The Firebird, which had me excited to finally get around to checking this out. Alas, I didn't find it nearly so interesting and entertaining as the others. The music itself didn't so grab me; additionally, this one seemed not fully complete as stand alone music independent of the ballet... as if incomplete on its own.

Having learned that Stravinsky subsequently composed a piano version, i became curious although I had no expectation I would like it as much. Again I was wrong.... really wrong! This thing totally kicks butt! Freed from the requirement to accompany dance, Stravinsky wrote a truly astonishing piano work! The virtuosic demands are totally off the hook and the structural development is solit. Together, this thrilled me to a wholly unexpected degree.

Arnold Schönberg - Chamber Symphony #1

Another chamber symphony here, but instead of being intensely lush and melodic, this one inhabits a much more austere and challenging environment. But it's not severe for severity sake, it just sounds that way at first due to Schönberg's use of fourths rather than the more easygoing thirds to build triads. It'll never have that gorgeous, lush feel, but once the ear adapts, it does have a sort of austere beauty, and that nicely feeds the structure of the piece, making for another uniquely satisfying listen.

Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good

The 4th of 5 singles off Crow's self-titled album, it's an admirable follow up to the excellent Everyday is a Winding Road.

Somewhere on the fringes of rock, country and pop, it's a good blend of all 3 and it ultimately leads to quite a catchy time.

A real good car song also in my humble opinion.

The value of this collection depends on how much Earth, Wind & Fire you want to own. Between 1973 and 1981, this R&B band was a highly successful hit machine. Their hitmaking prowess ended at the dawn of the eighties, a period which included a four year hiatus. Since coming back, the hits have been absent. But for eight years, they were on top. So…how much do you need? The definitive EWF collection has always been the 1978 monster The Best Of Vol. 1. It’s got ten tracks, all of them essential. It’s a lean and perfect collection, without a single weaker track. Since then, it seems as though there’s a new EWF compilation every couple of years. Some are single discs, some have two. But there’s only so much here that’s truly important.

So, why this one? Greatest Hits came out in 1998, and it contains seventeen tracks…seven more than Best Of Vol. 1. All but one of the songs is on the earlier collection (“Love Music”). And there’s nothing released after 1981, because, well, the quality of the songs dipped after that. The important songs are on both: “Shining Star”, “Sing A Song”, “Got To Get You Into My Life”. The one song here that isn’t on Best Of that’s at that same level is 1979’s “Boogie Wonderland”, a collaboration with The Emotions. Greatest Hits does give you a glimpse at their lesser singles, but not at much between the two decades after the release of Best Of. If you’re a fan, this may be a better option, but realistically, there hasn’t been a better compilation for EWF than Best Of. Stick with that one.

Thanks for sharing. Pessoa is amazing and this is making me want to revisit Tobacco Shop, Maritime Ode, and Message. Scaruffi ignores his major work, The Book of Disquiet, though; perhaps it's hard to classify and rate as literature for him.

Unlike the other two categories in this round, the video I’ve chosen features musicians who are completely unknown to me. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s not my habit to form a personal connection with artists by taking an interest in who they are as individuals. In fact, it’s fair to say that this particular choice was somewhat accidental—
I didn’t find anything else in their EP from this year that really grabbed me.
On the other hand, the video itself truly stands out due to its sheer energy.
This, in turn, resonates with the two other February releases I instinctively selected for the other categories in this round.
The common theme is that of a toxic, obsessive fixation on someone or something.
Across all three releases, the artists reject a "polished," commercial sound in favor of raw, honest emotion.

"None of the songs are bad at all. As a matter of fact, on its own merit this is a very very good album. The problem is that I just heard this album last year and back in 2008 also. You could put all the tracks from El Camino, Brothers, and Attack & Release in one playlist, hit random, and have three hours of great music. But I'll bet you can't place which album each of the songs were on without cheating."

"Attack & Release is far more dirty and pwerful, however with Brothers the Keys where able to refine their sound and even generate a pop hook that brought them a well deserved mainstream success. That album was amazing and so is El Camino, it is fun, catchy and really rocknrolla, however and this is why I don't think is at the level of their past two pieces, the band doesn't seem to try to surpise us or even themselves, it is way inside their comfort zone and although it sounds amazing after what they did in their prior two albums I guess I was expecting more of them..."

Thanks for reporting this. It does sound like the @ symbol in the artist's name is causing an issue (a few similar artists affected). I'll investigate and get this fixed, although it might not be straight away as any changes to the search functionality will need testing to make sure they don't introduce issues elsewhere (added to current workload).

EDIT: Ignore, not the issue I thought it was. Investigating...
