Sometimes I buy records judging them for their cover + the name of the songs, but the cover it's more important. And I wasn't there when it was such a big deal but I still think it is very important.

But the cover adds to the mythology of the album. Albums like Kid A, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and In the Court of the Crimson King to me are inseparable from the artwork. I guess I'm just a romantic though. If the music is there to express something, why not express it with every aspect of the product?

Even without talking about starring for hours into a vinyl cover (never done that btw), you're much less likely to download a great album with a stupid name or ugly iTunes photo...

Last year, I bought several albums mostly on their covers : "Helplessness Blues", "New History Warfare Vol. 2", "Ravedeath, 1972". They were so beautiful, I was expecting something grand.

I don't say the cover will change the musical content, but for me, it's definitely an important item.

I dunno... I am a women, we do whim purchases 😉 . If I am browsing racks of albums (something I used to spend hours doing in the 80s/90s) not looking for anything specific and just seeing what is there. If something caught my eye or I thought it looked interesting, then yes I bought it. If when I got it home it was shit, it ended up on the shit pile. If it was good then woohoo 😄 Now I don't get anything like as much enjoyment out of browsing itunes... 🙁

I still call 'The Velvet Underground with Nico', 'The Banana Album' because of the iconic cover.

I agree the days of the album art is over, but I still miss it a bit. I always thought it added to the experience!

It is. The days of staring at an album cover while listening to the music on it are long gone. I remember doing that in the 80s, but then, around 1986, came the CD and album art was slowly becoming less relevant until the mp3 appeared when it pretty close to died.

I do a bit... Part of the anticipation of listening to an album was the cover art. Did it hold a hint to what the album was going to be like? Was it somehow the key? In the past I bought albums solely on the strength of their cover art (without having heard a single song by the band), sometimes I was disappointed, more often than not I wasn't. It was all part of the whole music experience...

Yeah those days are gone...
