The Low End Theory is my favorite hip hop album. It has everything a hip hop album should need, mainly great lyrics and great production. It also proves that hip hop and jazz can make a great combination.

While I agree that Low End Theory is classic (great early 90s counter to the aggressive tone of gangsta rap), I think I end up playing Midnight Marauders more often, if only to hear Busta Rhymes on "Oh My God". (I nearly started a brawl in basketball, because it got in my head after an opponent missed his shot, and he thought I was mocking him) 😐 . I love Busta. Too bad he never had a consistent album that could qualify as great.

I haven't heard this album, so I guess I'll give it a listen tomorrow.

Is it one of those 'first listen, instantly awesome' albums? Or does it take some time?

personally it was in my chart after only one listening.

I loved it IMMEDIATELY and it was the very first hip-hop album I ever owned, so I would say it'll form a pretty instant attachment if it's your thing.

I never liked much hip hop before hearing this album, and it's still not my favorite genre, but this album has a quality to it that just pulls the listener into its orbit, and once you're ensconced in that world, It's cool, it's mellow, it's clever, it's funky, it's amazing!

The album is like sitting in a dimly lit room with close friends you've known for years who are intelligent, funny, etc, and sharing a joint or a bottle of red wine, reminiscing, catching up, and just talking back and forth endlessly about anything and everything all night long, and sharing a bunch of a ha! and ha ha ha moments, until well into the early morning hours. I love it. 😁

Right. This is what we were really talking about. I didn't like it much on first listen. Guess I'm gonna have to give it another shot.

EDIT: 48 minutes and a relisten later. No, still don't see what's so great about it. I guess it's just not my thing.
