I think for the gen-y, post 9/11 generation it's that special landmark release, one that almost never comes around anymore, so yes we tend to rate it high. It was my favorite album when I first heard it and still is today.

I think the reason for its acclaim is pretty easy to figure out though. Its as swedenman already started to point out, a bunch of well arranged pop songs with catchy melodies that manage to avoid obvious cliche. This is paired with some lyrics that create/give the illusion of powerful emotion because they attach to a very relatable youth centric angst as well as paint very broad and easily discernible thematic strokes ("theres something wrong, in the heart of man"). In a sense, anthemic melodies, fairly cool arrangements and lyrical themes which lots of people will attach too. Its actually a good recipe for acclaim. Personally I find this prevents the album from reaching say top 100 quality, as I actually get hints of insincerity and emotional cheapness if I listen to the album in a bad mood.

I think it reaches top 100 quality alright. You're right mostly about the album, though.

Win Butler is king of pathetic whiny indie kids.

I have listened to Funeral all the way through, yes. And I personally don't find his voice annoying. It's certainly not whiny compared to what's-his-face from Mumford and Sons. God damn.

Okay, fine, they're a LITTLE whiny, but they're one indie band where the whiny vocals are not the main focal point of the music. See, when I listen to the average soft indie band, I feel like I'm hearing nothing but generic acoustic guitar riffs and super whiny-ass vocals. On Funeral, I hear quite a bit more than that, even if the vocals are still a little whiny.

I mean I can think of dozens of albums that are more emotionally powerful than Funeral. I honestly don't see that much of a difference between it and your average indie album. Its not bad or anything, but recently I've found myself liking less and less. It just seems... lame for lack of a better term.

I really don't care that it's top 11; there are worse higher, but I hate that Arcade Fire seem to be so highly regarded for no real reason to me. I mean, surely other bands are doing something good currently too.

Oh and they sure as hell are whiny!

What makes Funeral objectively great? It didn't change the face of music without me knowing, did it?

I like funeral, but am not a rabid fan of it.

Hey look I like Arcade Fire and yeah they're one of the best bands of the century so far, albeit they don't have much competition. But actually their position in the top bands of the 21st century is not relevant to the overall chart is it?

Why did this get bumped anyway?

Does it deserve to be #11? NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT, that's ingratitude: It deserves to be on top 5 of all time.

The thing you are all writing about is completely off the point: you see if BEA and it's overall chart influences people that much then the chart should not change at all. Everyone sees OK Computer on top and thinks it's the best and then there's DSOTM and so on; if this was the procedure Funeral would've never had the chance to climb up in the chart because of all the albums that are on higher ranks and new members would have appreciated them more because they're higher than Funeral, like London Calling. But London Calling despite it's higher rank is going down.
