Perhaps a compromise would be to allow new members access to the Suggestions and Announcements forums, and to use more forums they would have to create a chart. Or have certain forums linked to certain levels of membership.

I never visit the politics and religion forum, so I'm glad I don't have to sift through all of those threads to get to the ones I want to read in the Lounge.

On a side note, perhaps we could split the Music forum into two: one for user-generated threads, and one for "official" BEA threads (i.e. Album of the Day and Chart of the Day)?

As for an increase in moderators, regardless of if it is good or bad, I think it is an inevitability.

This is primarily about creating a safe environment where everyone is comfortable. The other end of the spectrum is anarchy and chaos. I want the site to be a nice place to visit where you can have a decent conversation, and not some giant flame-war.

As far as moderating is concerned, I think it's better to nip things in the bud than have to deal with the fall-out after things have gone wrong.

If you want proof, the politics area is probably the least policed area of the site, but it's also the area where BEA gets the most reported posts and complaints, so it ends up being the most time-consuming area to look after even though less up-front moderation is performed. However, I'm not proposing any changes here.

I personally waste a LOT of my personal time composing special PMs to calm people down, or placate the people that have been offended, or writing forum posts to apologise for other people's stupid behaviour etc. This is, by far, the aspect of running the site that I like the least. I'd much rather spend that time developing new features and looking after the technical side of the site because time is pretty scarce as it is without all of that overhead as well, and there are lots of areas of the site that could do with improving.

Not sure why some people are trying to wind him up, and it's the same person again, but I suggest to forget the obsession with him because it is as tiring for him to read this all the time as it is for everybody else.

Whatever it was Naples just typed reminded me, the other reason I wouldn't want to be a moderator would be that I wouldn't be able to use my Ignore feature; it's been saving me a lot of headaches since it's been implemented. There are a few people here whose opinions I have NO interest in ever reading, and the ability to put them on mute is not a feature I'd be willing to sacrifice.
