I really couldn't disagree more. It's almost like you've never used the internet. Silence is the killer. It is far from "tacit acceptance". Silence stifles stupidity. In fact, your rant (half valid / half sanctimonious and tiresome) is exactly what a guy like that wants in return... more attention. Attention is his form of acceptance and you give him an audience. You are the oxygen to his fire. If you had left it alone for the moderators to handle the nonsense would have died in the vacuum. Instead we had pages of uselessness. Like Norman Bates said, we ended up having a prolonged discussion on race and BS.

This interesting question has been raised many times over the years at BEA, and I think the answers you get here are pretty accurate (except for Barajas of course). It's all a question of audience of the site, people here are more into indie rock stuff than anything else (and that's counting myself, to be frank). Personally I like rap very much, but discovered it way after every other genre that might have mattered for me ; hence the relatively small proportion of rap in my charts - it simply wasn't the culture I was raised in, even though I was born in the 70s. I'm still catching up 😄 and hope I'll be for quite some time too! So much great music to be listened to in rap.

People here may be "more into indie rock", but if you check the major music sources (Rolling Stone, Spin, NME, etc.), you typically will find bands like Radiohead, The Smiths, Joy Division, Sonic Youth and Arcade Fire very high on their lists too. It could be that people who listen to a ton of music (let's call them "experts") just think those are truly better albums.

What I'm saying is I don't think indie is all that much more emphasized here than many of the traditional sources.

I like hip-hop. I think more of it belongs on this site.

Maybe genre-specific charts would help hip-hops profile, but that might be artificially inflating it.

I like talking with people on BEA a lot. I like it when the peace is kept, and everyone is getting along. I have people I don't want to talk to, like Gary, on ignore so that that peace can continue. But the fact that somebody can say something this ignorant, and that nobody else is going to say something about it...I can't abide. Just can't, just won't. I wouldn't let this pass in real life and I'm not going to do it on the internet.

So here is, as calmly as I can put it, a point-by-point refutation to this...nonsense. If Gary wants to throw a fit after he reads this, as he is wont to do, homeboy can go to town.

First off, where you live is never, ever an excuse for using racial slurs of any kind. I'm sure there are a lot of people in Milwaukee who have the decency to not refer to their fellow man as a term that has been used for centuries degrade and dehumanize them. To say that "it's not his fault, he's from Milwaukee" is an insult to everyone in Milwaukee who isn't a racist.

Secondly, "politically correct" and "respectful" are not synonyms, nor should they be regarded as such. It is not "politically correct" to not wish for somebody to use one of the most vile, hateful words in the English language. It is simply humane. Your 1st amendment rights allow you to use the word, of course; your first amendment rights ALSO make it so that you can't complain if people call you a bigoted sack of shit for doing so. It's a two-way street. You not having a problem with how he "words things", aka uses slurs, has no bearing whatsoever on whether other people should or should not have a problem with it.

Finally, and most importantly, white people have this extraordinary, juvenile misconception that America is on an even playing field racially and that they can say whatever they want to whoever they want and nobody should have the right to be offended. It is NOT an even playing field. Many people across the country and in fact across the world still use that word to debase and demean black people every single day. Do you not think it's fair that black people are "allowed" to say the word and you aren't? Tough fucking shit. It doesn't carry the same weight for you as it does for them; it doesn't carry the same history and the same vile connotations every time you hear it as it does when a black person hears it. Black people using it among themselves is a way of reappropriation(see: http://web.archive.org/web/200510252203...1537.pdf). It is an absolutely different context when different races use it. And not everyone agrees that the word should be used at all, even in the black community! However, how blacks do or do not decide to use the word has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not you can use it. You can't. If you can, you'll be called, at the very least, an ignorant fuckstain, and correctly so.

I've said all I'm going to say on the matter. The fact that somebody can make a statement so devoid of consciousness and have nobody stand up to correct it is frankly disappointing and I expected better of many members of BEA. If I know Gary, this is going to send him into a boiling, white-hot rage and he's going to call me a bitch cock fuckhugger or some other equally incoherent sting of insults that are used half-correctly. I don't care. I'm done putting up with this kind of thinking, and I'm done putting up with people who put up with this kind of thinking.
