"Something Else" is heaven. The Kinks are also one of my favorite bands. I'd never say they are better than The Beatles, they are not Probably the same with the Rolling Stones adn The Who, but I still like more the Kinks than those last two ones. Even thought after "Lola versus Powerman" the quality of their albums was lower, still there are LOTS of song post 70's that absolutely rock and most of the poeple don't know and probably will never know. I'm still waiting for a stereo boxset from them (mono boxset was already released so hopefully stereo one is close). Love them, Hail the kinks! '

I love the kinks to, got to know them by the song all day and all of the night, from the boat that rocked, they have indeed better songs and sometimes lyrics but in general the albums are not my thing, thats why i had to put a best of album in my chart...

I'm not sure how I feel about this collaboration project. I can't help but be reminded of that horrible duets album Frank Sinatra did in the early 90's. Clearly this an attempt to put The Kinks back on the historical map. As I argued in the beginning of this thread, they are underrated, so maybe it is a good thing.

I think one of the reasons why The Kinks might not be as popular as The Beatles, is, as Pete Townshend said (quoted from Naples) "their quintessential Britishness".From 1966 onwards, their lyrics are so imbued with the past glory and everyday life of the British that I think it could difficult for others to relate to it. Plus, one could argue they lacked consistency. From the early-garage-rockish "You Really Got Me" to "She Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina", you'd think it was two bands playing those (same thing goes with The Byrds maybe, one of my other big 60s favourite). And finally, the lyrics being so British, and, if you'll allow me to say so, conservative (apparent nostalghia for the Victorian era etc.), part of the influential American critics felt the band was out-of-date at a time when proto-punk (Stooges, MC5) or left-wing lyricists and acid eaters were the thing to listen to (I'm thinking about Bangs and the like).
I'm not criticizing what The Kinks were, I love them. Just trying to understand what prevented them from beingthe superstars they should have been.

The Kinks are truely great, with albums like "Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society", "Something Else", "Well Respected Kinks", "Arthur" and "Face to Face", how can they not be compared to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones..
And I feel they produced more great tracks than the Stones, "Waterloo Sunset", "Lola" , "All Day and All of The Night", "Tired of Waiting for You", "You Really got me" "Sunny Afternoon", "Dead End Street", "Apeman" and "The Village Green Preservation Society" are all classics in my mind, and are one of the greatest ever songs, each in their own right!
The Kinks are right where they belong below the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Stones, The Who and probably Pink Floyd. They had a lot of good albums but not many classic albums. They were nowhere near as influential as the Beatles as they broke the American domination in rock music basically paving the way for bands like the Kinks. The whole Band Had To Write Their Own Songs thing only came into vogue with the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Take these two albums Rubber Soul and Revolver and this was before Sgt Pepper influence on popular music.

When the Beatles released Rubber Soul in 1965, Brian Wilson (the driving force behind the Beach Boys) knew that the rules had changed. Popular music until that time was primarily driven by singles. Albums were just a collection of singles and were usually accompanied by filler (substandard songs written and recorded just to fill space). Rubber Soul however was a complete musical statement. This drove Brian Wilson to reach higher than the stuff he was writing before hand. The result was Pet Sounds (1966): a truly personal and mature album. I think Rubber Soul also had a huge effect on the Rolling Stones namely Brian Jones on Aftermath. Harrison incorporation of sitar into the band’s sound practically changed the way people thought about the sonic possibilities of pop music.

Listen to what's going on with Revolver including the single "Rain"/"Paperback Writer" you had ""Eleanor Rigby," "I'm Only Sleeping," "Love You To," "She Said She Said," "Good Day Sunshine," "I Want To Tell You," Taxman," and "Tomorrow Never Knows" are pretty revelatory and groundbreaking for pop in general, in the realms of garage styling, guitar-less tracks, backwards dubbing, Indian music, guitar amplification, bass augmentation, avant-garde structuring, and sampling. "Tomorrow Never Knows" had feedback/psychedelic loops/backward-tapes rock over a loud drum and bass sound nothing like it really before.

As for songwriting the Beatles were known for their melodies, perfect pop hooks and use of uncoventional chord usage. This basically made them totally different than bands who were trying to emulate blues musicians or the up and coming garage rock sound. They were on a different planet to be honest.

The Kinks actually used a lot of uncoventional chords also but their songs are hardly as covered as much as the Beatles. I like the Kinks by the way but listen to their lame attempt of "Long Tall Sally" and compare it to the Beatles and tell me who were better rockers?

While I agree that The Beatles trump The Kinks in certain areas of music (most areas) and career-wise are better, when one looks at the songwriting contributions of the bands (an area I think is the most important aspect to how good a band is), they're often right on par with and lyrically, often superior to The Beatles. The problem in comparing them is that The Beatles' career was much shorter and that they were more popular and well known. The lack of notoriety of the Kinks has a lot to do with bad luck and circumstance as they were banned from playing America during their most creative period. Anyway, I'm just arguing that The Kinks deserve the same due as The Beatles and The Stones, which you disagree with and that's fine. I was examining the impact of the original British invasion, so Pink Floyd and Zeppelin shouldn't be included on that list because those bands belong to a different era that came later. Given the choice, though, although I like Pink Floyd, I'd take The Kinks over them any day of the week, but that's my personal taste speaking. Although the two bands really have nothing in common aside from country of origin.
So when one talks about the greatest bands of the British Invasion, the same names always come up: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and sometimes The Who. The Kinks are often left off that list or relegated to second tier status. In my opinion, this is very wrong. The Kinks are every bit as important and influential as The Beatles or the Stones. Over the course of their career they went from raw garage rock to music hall and a lighter folk influenced pop to a brief fling with country rock to a vaudeville influence to arena rock. Their golden period from about 1966-1970 is almost and sometimes every bit the equal of The Beatles. The Kinks had one of rock n roll's all-time greatest songwriters in Ray Davies, especially in the lyric department. Lennon / McCartney were great tunesmiths, but they couldn't write lyrics as great as Ray Davies and often Davies was both a great lyricist and great tunesmith, so he had the whole package. They made three (maybe four) absolutely classic albums in the 60's, wrote what has to be one the top five ballads ever written, Waterloo Sunset, and influenced both punk and Brit pop in a big way. Yet they don't seem to get their due. The casual music fan knows probably two, maybe three songs of theirs (You Really Got Me, Lola, and possibly All Day and All of the Night).

So who else here thinks the Kinks are tragically underrated both on this site and by music fans in general? If you agree, why do you think they're not more well known? Or if you prefer, just tell me what you think of The Kinks. Favorite albums, songs? Post You tube clips if you want. God save the Kinks!

The Kinks were good, close to very good, but competing with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones is to say the least very difficult. Those two greats have had much higher impact on music and produced a greater body of excellent music than the Kinks have. That is an unnecessarily impossible comparison though, as in their own right the Kinks are well worth listening to, and while not being able to clinch any of the top 50 spots Village Green Preservation Society is essential listening.
