The disk had been expected! And they rewarded me. 😮
I don't think I've ever really bought an album on the release date. I don't really follow that many new bands.

The only time I've ever went out of my way to buy an album on release day was for Christina Perri's "Lovestrong." I loved the song Jar of Hearts so much that I skipped my morning classes to go to Fred Meyer right when it opened and bought/listened to the album. It didn't disappoint and is now fitting in nicely on my chart.

on the release day? well that would be a very limited list. I'll do ones that are very close to the release date.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Sound Of Silver
Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends
Black Holes And Revelations (though I no longer like this one)
Black Fingernails, Red Wine
Have One On Me
Wincing The Night Away

that's all I can think of for now.
There's just something special about experiencing an album at the same time as a bunch of other people, which is normally what happens when you have a release date. Look at In Rainbows.

Well mine are a no in regards to buying on release date.

In that respect:

Killers - Hot Fuss
Muse - Black Holes And Revelations / The Resistance
Elbow - Build A Rocket Boys!
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
Powderfinger - Vulture Street
Kimbra - Vows

That's about it for now.
There's just something special about experiencing an album at the same time as a bunch of other people, which is normally what happens when you have a release date. Look at In Rainbows.

In Rainbows is a very, VERY rare occurance - we can't all similtaneously enjoy an LP the very millisecond it's released, especially in these days where albums leak weeks before they officially come out. Plus we don't all have the luxury of being able to trundle down to the nearest record shop on the day an album comes out, due to geographical, work or financial constraints.

That said, I get your point - looking forward to an album coming out then rushing down your nearest record store to buy it is something that is becoming all the more rare thanks to the Internet. Part of the joy is making the effort in the first place - c.f. when I got my hands on The Strokes' "Is This It" at a midnight launch at my local record store (big up THE ROCK BOX) when they were actually open for lots of little kids in hoodies to buy the latest Slipknot 'album'. In fact the last time I made a special visit to a record shop just to get something on release day was Joanna Newsom's "Have One On Me" (nearly 2 years ago). I imagine to have persuaded you to go out of your way to purchase something on the day it was released means that you probably either liked the artist in the first place or that you read a review/heard a lead single and were hooked to such a degree that your very life depended on getting your grubby mits on the album. Hence my earlier point - you're either going to adore it, or be seriously let down by it (as was the case with Blur's The Great Escape).

the only album for me would be MBDTF. Cosmogramma is close (I had an initial wtf phase in the days after it was released; and as a digression to another thread I bought it on day of release largely because of the album art), as well as Transference (but, I go back and forth between liking the album, it's more of a proxy for liking Spoon's entire career). So, MBDTF.

Guys, I hope you all actually picked up these albums the day they were released. That's what this thread is about, not enjoying stuff on first listen, which is COMPLETELY different.

There's just something special about experiencing an album at the same time as a bunch of other people, which is normally what happens when you have a release date. Look at In Rainbows.

Two immediately spring to mind, and more's to the point I still listen to regularly today:

AIR - Moon Safari. Read a review and thought it sounded good. Went down to Our Price Records in Canterbury on the Monday, stuck it on the listening post and loved every second. Still think it's an amazing LP.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - Merriweather Post Pavillion. Having seen AC a few times over the years some of the tracks (Brother Sport especially) were already familiar to me, so I suppose in essence I had hyped it up myself to the point it was either going to enthrall me or hugely disappoint. Luckily the former was true.

Also "Goodbye Lullaby" was a pretty good album, very very underrated pop album.

The only albums I can distinctly remember listening to on the day of their releases are Hypnotize by System of a Down and A Dramatic Turn of Events by Dream Theater. The latter's pretty good, though not DT's best by a long shot. The former is one of my favorite albums overall, though only my 3rd favorite of SOAD's 5 albums. I just love Toxicity and Mezmerize that much, I s'pose :/

I guess Hypnotize would be my answer, then. It was a masterpiece when I first heard it and is today still one of my favorites.

Asleep In The Nack and The Colour Of Spring both were instant loves. I guess there was prior listening of the bands beforehand but still are mainstays on my chart. Frank Ferdinand was another that I loved pretty much straight away.
