Having seen both (if you include the Pixies reunion), I think Sonic Youth were a better live band too. Some shows were almost like a religious experience.

Great match up! I always say, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, and early R.E.M. pretty much make up the holy trinity of the American indie guitar sound (Listen to Modest Mouse, for example, and you'll hear echoes of all three). Sonic Youth for me, although The Pixies are more fun.

Why 🙁 I love them both... But Sonic Youth has that brilliant discography... Damn. Only for Daydream Nation and Sister, I say Sonic Youth.

Sonic Youth don't have an album as good as Doolittle but their discography as a whole is one of the best in music, so them.

They're both extremely overrated, but I'd prefer Sonic Youth for their superior singles output. And Thurston Moore's hawtness.

I've never really been crazy about The Pixies... I don't think they're crap, but they don't fire me up. I've always felt I'm not getting something.

Sonic Youth, on the other hand... Hot diggity damn! These guys are in my top 10. For my preferences, this is not a difficult choice. Sonic Youth by a mile. 😁 Thanks Juno
